Uriah, have you ever read any books by John Ringo and/or Tom Kratman?

The USS Des Moines is one of the settings, and becomes a major character (it gets an alien AI during a rebuild), in "Yellow Eyes" and its sequel "Eye of the Storm" (though you have to read "A hymn before battle" and the earlier books to best understand the setting.
