Tonight I'm watching the videos of the townhall meeting and I gotta say, the devs are really cookin' right now. I mean, how much stuff can they cram into a game to let a player dictate what the outcome might or might not be?

Micheal Moore was speaking and he said something that made me think these guys really know whats going on. He said that there is a little pond in Doom...and who the hell would go fishing there for a fish??? Well guess what? They put THAT into the game. I never would have thought to fish that pond (of all places) in Doom! Who in the F**K thought that up? That's bloody cool!

I don't have a fishing skill...not one point, but to think that I have the freedom to do this in addition to EVERYTHING else, is good news to me.

NO game out there delivers this...NOT ONE.

There are a couple of places to fish there, not just 1 :)

Star Wars Galaxies, up until SOE screwed up and released the New Game Elements patch, removing professions and classes and turning everyone into jedis with a leveling system...

No surprises that that world was one giant sandbox game really, as Designer Dragon (Raph Koster) was one of the leading devs, just like he was one on UO...

Fortunately there are a few guys and gals out there who are recreating the old SWG game from scratch. An emulator so to say: SWGEMU. They've been at it for a long time, but their 1.0 version is getting really close. Can't wait until it's up and running!...

There are other games out there. Like Lineage 2 has Airships, ship battles and fishing as well. Fishing in L2 is a lot more engaging than UO, as you actually have to control the rod to get the fish and fish have a chance of containing things in their gut.

Eve Online is probably the best sandbox game currently on the market. Definately not a game for those who don't like PvP challenges though. Even in high security space people try to scam you, trick you, or even suicide attack you if your cargo is valueable enough.

I have to admit, Eve Online is very well done. The industry, manufacturing, trading and markets are the best I have ever experienced in an MMO. I flip flop between playing Eve and playing UO. These days, UO is my number one, I've had many month runs where Eve is my number one. 8)

Second Life.
That one is creepy. Probably the best representation of a sandbox game, but is it a game? I tried it for a few hours. When I found my character's only means of income was dancing in a club for money, I walked away from that. There was something creepy about the experience to me. I think I over heard a conversation between a couple about a sex add on or something along that line that left me thinking, "This place is not for me". Sex is for RL, not SL.

LOL fishing in dungeons and so is WOW. There you get the rewards for fishing in enemy towns and such things.
:p

Lots of games have lots of features - check out EVE what a company can do who stands behind their product philosophy for years.

Re: Sandbox! What other game has it?

Real Life...
UO is the cats meow thats for sure and always will be...

But there are games like Istaria aka Horizon at one time..

Were crafting is beter then what you find on mobs...
stuff to enhance tools, armor, weapons even spells can be found on mobs...And not something that takes weeks to drop..maybe 5 min up but not to long..

Everything is player made..

Housing is plots were you design your plot layout see what the buildings will look like placed before starting to build them....

When your ready..it places scafolding down were said buildings are..

you name it you can build it almost..

Were crafting skills are are lvl gained..ya a grind like most games but not that bad...

adventure schools can all belearned and have some of there skills and effects pass over to one you realy like..(mix fighter)

ANd last but what most seem to like.....Be , play a Dragon and learn to fly. they have there lairs they can build...

But yes there are alot of good games...but only few will ever get near what UO lets you do...

Re: Sandbox! What other game has it?

UO is for me a sandbox game yes.
But i play eve online with 2 accounts because its a hugh sandbox game too.
I like the grafics more in eve but the pvp i like in uo more becasue solo pvp in eve is a bit expensive.

UO will always be the ultimate Sandbox game. I think it even has more options than a game like EVE.

EVE Online is massive and a steep learning curve and is second to UO as far as what you can do.

To the OP, it's great having options like that. You can do what you want when you want and how you want. Which is why us UO players are spoiled. We started with the best and have yet seen a game that could touch the possibilities on what UO can do.

If you want a pure sandbox game.. that is, one without any sort of RPG attached.. there's always Minecraft. Explore and build, that's all there is to it.

Second Life.
I wouldn't call Second Life a game. It is basically Playstation Home, a graphical chat room with mini games. Sims Online was more of a game than Second Life.

Second Life is sex, clothes, sex, shopping, building and sex. Oh, did I forget to mention sex?

SL is a sandbox (a very powerful one at that), but it is not a game - it is an addiction.

"Pure" sandbox is outmoded, but UO still has strong elements of the sandbox approach, and that's mostly to its credit.

I thought the fishing in Doom thing was neat too.

We actually used to joke that there were artifacts in there; so someone e-moted jumping in to look for them.

Oh, UO team: As I recall it's called Lake Mortis.

Eve's learning curve is not so steep anymore. They have tutorials for everything now and it's easy to follow these days. And the tutorials are incorporated into the missioning system. You can certainly enjoy Eve by doing agent combat mission runs. The nice thing about the agent combat missions is you start getting a sense for your ship and fittings and start understanding what skills you need to train to be able to improve the fittings and your ships. Just that part alone is very compelling. It's a very enjoyable thing.

LOL, just down load it. It's pretty much free to start with. It's "Item Mall" based after that.

Re: Sandbox! What other game has it?

I'm not talking about a game that has NO direction - no real history. UO always had a (sort of) event direction where as other games just kind of let you do the facebook thing - Farmville. UO has a history where stories are told and people can look back years ago and remember who they were with and what happened as if it were yesterday. It's like the wild wild west evolved in ten years where it took 100 years for life to evolve in the USA - lots of history there.

I do remember SWG and ALL i can remember is the techno clubs with people dancing...kind of stupid to me. As far as Eve Online is concerned, I'm not really into the SPACE ship thing, universe game, so call me old fashioned or whatever, but I like to keep my feet on the ground.

With UO, I can remember, for example, when Trinsic was invaded by the undead and people, no matter what beef they had with others, particpated in resurrecting others where they had been enemies just moments prior. It was just epic!

THAT'S what this game is all about. And now with a High Seas expansion in the next few months, I'm really glad I've stuck with this game through out the years.

there is many great games with superb lore, but as you implied these generelly tell you how to play, cause of this level based.

a good example of what i mean by that is wow, which basicly you cant do anything without killing stuff.

1. quest, kill stuff
2. dungeons, kill stuff
3. hunt resources, kill stuff

finally the only thing you can do in wow that does not require killing is fishing (ironicly)

but this damn xp you need for levels, and levels you need cause the game tells you that you need em, kinda messes up the sandbox mentality like uo have, for this reason i keep returning to uo :)

You can also try Wurm ...that is also a real Sandbox, but not so good graphics as it only has 1 programmer.

Some say Ryzom is a good sandbox too as you can customize your spells and can learn all skills. It has a cheap fee for now.

Darkfall seems to be the PvP sandbox and was partly developed after UO, but has no skill limit, so sooner or later 1 character can do all.

Mortal Online tried to be close to UO, but has too many technical problems.

Xsyon is another sandbox in development where you can even change the terrain.

Earhrise will be another one to come out that will try the sandbox approach.

And to add some sacrilege I say that WOW at the moment is the closest sandbox to UO for me. You can PvP and get gear. You can solo lots of quests. You can PvE in dungeons. You can PvE hardcore in raids.
You have useful sideskills like cooking and fishing.
And for the rare collectors there are mounts and pets en masse.
Too bad it is itembased and so also not the game i really want, but from its features it beats UO these days.

The W. Brit invasion was a hoot and pretty much like that. A tamer and I were luring the stuff behind the buildings while mages on the roofs helped keep us healed and put some smack down on the foe as well.

Every lull, we'd all get together and split the loot up. Damn back alley looked like a stack of firewood back there with all the corpses. Then again, I collected more than a few death robes. <shrug>

Re: Sandbox! What other game has it?

UO was the greatest sandbox of them all.

Unfortunately, assorted whining players, nonsensical development decisions, non-existent EA customer service or indeed understanding, took a rather large dump in the sandbox.

Now, although current "fanbois" will suggest otherwise, the smell is horrible and they'll complain a bit, but they usually just hold their noses and try to ignore the idea that their sandbox has actually been soiled for good.

Meanwhile, they wonder why others have jumped out of the sandbox.

Erm... probably because we don't want to play something, that looks like the neighbours epileptic and incontinent dog has been having a frenzied fit in there. We preferred it when the sand was a lot cleaner and purer, more fun to play in. Neither do we want to jump back in whilst it's clearly still soiled.

Suffice it to say that although there are indeed other sandboxes out there to play in, there's nothing close to what the UO sandbox used to be like.

This is 100% true ... Cal, if you're reading - in-game CS really does stink. But the crappy decisions one is close second.

From what I've read about Wurm Online, it's a true sandbox game.
