I really, really like the implementation of the EM program.

I like the implementation of Imbuing.

I didn't play for a long time, between 2005 and February of 2010, and Imbuing made it so much easier to come back and set up to play again, as compared to paying insane prices for runic crafted armor pieces.

The people... Dev's who create the content, EM's that volunteer their time to create events, gamers that create the community, and the staff and members here at Stratics.

Just one thing? That's hardly fair.

I would have to say the people.

The way how UO has been made. There is no other Game that allows you to be whatever you want to be and make whatever you want to do.

The ability to login and do whatever strikes my fancy at the moment, not having to follow some predetermined plotline to the 'end.'

Just the amount of stuff that there is to do in UO.

If you want, you can be a crafter and never even leave a town or even never kill anything and be very successful and rich.

Sandbox! Do whatever you want!

Although to be very specific, the entire housing system.

That about sums it up for me. And I guess this would fall under content but...

Housing!

You can put things on the ground.
Interestingly only the old games have this feature.

Being able to drop items on the ground wherever you want and to have other players interact with it.

No other game allows it as far as I know.

Diversity

My family has played 2 other games & it takes us about 60 to beat them totally. You start off all excited & then bam its basically all over. It amounts to raise character skills and kill monsters or people. Thats all there ever is to do.

UO isn't like that. There are so many things to do that you don't ever have to be bored.

Tough choice.. Between the people, the fact that it's skill-based and NOT an FPS, and the freedom and everything else...

I think I have to go with Crafting as well.. No other game offers so many options for crafters.

Since you said "ONE thing," and since others have already picked the EM program, and saying "my guild" would be accurate but probably not what you meant, I'll pick something I don't think anyone else has said yet: The Doom Gauntlet.

There's several things of course. I don't think anyone plays a computer game about which they like only a single thing.

The classic client graphics.
Yes, I'm 100% serious.
This and the PvP. I enjoy the pvp, only play for the pvp and would stop playing if it was gone.

I like doing everything else but after this many years killing and being killed is my end game content. Never the same yet never different but keeps me coming back day after day.

13 years is a long time to hate a game.

-Galen's player
The post was "One thing I like about UO" All I said was " since the game became item based, nothing"

I wouldn't say I hate the game, I just don't respect it anymore. It isn't the game I signed up to play back in 1997.

It is hard to respect a game that is designed to have "the flavor of the day template". I know they need to keep the game fresh but I don't think it should be done in the manner they are doing it in.

They introduce new skills without any regard as to the impact they may have to the game. People spend months and months training skills and getting good items to only have them be rendered obsolete due to new skills or items. Let alone all the gold one has to spend.

At least when the game wasn't item based there was much more balance and there was the true need for a community as well as crafters.

So my answer to the post is "Nothing".

Edit:
Why am I still playing after 13 years? I am to busy to take up another game to work skills or do whatever is needed. So i log into UO to get a PvP fix. But I have only been to the Abyss once since its release.

Have you ever tried to edit a mod while you are fighting medusa? Thats a challenge, but requires 2 monitors :lick:

The fact that the lore is strong enough to provide a strong basis for RP, but not fixed enough to be strangling.

I have a hard time imagining RPing in Star Wars Galaxies or Lord of the Rings Online, for example. In both of those you're working within a framework that's established and well-known and likely unchanging. And if you're going to alter the outcome of say, the rebellion in Star Wars, then why bother being in that environment at all?

Even UO's occasional "scripted events" (devs' term) aren't as fixed in stone as, say, the siege of Helm's Deep, or the Battle on Hoth. The specifics of the recent demon attack on Britain, or the Undead invasion of Trinsic from years back, for example, were up for grabs, even if the outcome wasn't. But nothing about Helm's Deep or Hoth are open for question or challenge or change, presumably.
