Calling it quits after 13 years

My account is going on 13 years in a month... I don't know why I keep the subscription around. I'm a social person and I enjoy being in guilds.

But, when I log into the game it's simply impossible to join any guild.

I put in a question about in the "Ask the Devs" about possibly having guild incentives to add players... not once but twice. But, it's not posted and I realized I'm being ignored and also just simply disrespected.

If I'm going to play an MMO it's going to be with other players... UO isn't supposed to be a single player game and that's what it essentially is right now--a single player game.

I used to have good times a few years ago with being in guilds. But, it looks like those times have passed.... there's simply not enough people willing to add people to guilds.

SO, even though I hit the 13th year next month, It's about time I stopped hanging onto the game and call it quits.

I took down my house and deleted my toons so there's nothing left to give away.

If your a social gamer good luck in Farmville or Vampire Wars. There a bit more social than UO. You can solo about 90% of this games content.

You did not mentiom which shard you play.

Did you consider trying one of the more populated shard ?

Like Atlantic for the east coast or Pacific for the west coast.

Perhaps in one of those you might be able to find a Guild that you enjoy playing with ?

Good luck.

I am unsure whether to believe this tale or reject it as pretense. I am fairly certain I could find Guild(s) plural, to join, on every Shard that exists. Moreover, having also played for 13 years myself, even were this tale true, I doubt that alone would drive me to demolish my house and delete all my Characters ... BEFORE coming here to boast of it.

If it is true, it is a shame that any 13 year Vet might feel that way and take such action. If it is true, reopen your account and create a Character on Baja. Several Guilds would happily consider your application and likely add your Character as a Member. Moreover, many on Baja would aid you in becoming established there and enjoying your every style of play!

If it is pretense, Shame On You, and if you haven't quit, Please Do!

I see... so your hundreds of posts on multiple forums looking for guildmates just had no traction?

Hmm... though it says you only posted 5 times here.

I'm sure you wandered Luna and the various player towns on your shards for months, every night, looking for someone to play with. Then went to all the other shards, including Seige, and just couldn't find a single guild to talk with, even in all the various shard-wide events in the past 10 years.

Ah well, then I'd have to say you probably won't find anyone anywhere else either, but feel free to go looking.

13 years and you just now decide to quit....

There are guilds galore still all over and with many offers here you could go have a great time still.

Try Siege.... Atlantic is stuffed with guilds, Chessy too
From what I see you didnt even try to go look for one on any other shard... sugar open your eyes and see all the shards we have... many would be happy to have you and your experence.

It always amazes me that when anyone comes onto these boards and lets the community know that UO is over for them, there is always a few who jump into the thread and proceed to slag them off. The whole undertone of your post is one of anger. Why? Anger because hes quitting? Anger because he had the audacity to come here and post his reasons? Why shouldnt he? I suspect the deep rooted subconcious reason for this is actually fear. You know thats another one of our players gone and another step closer to UO's actual demise. Your angry with the game rather than the player, but you take it out on the player because the game (EA) doesnt care.

Its always easy to blame others when someone leaves. When you want to leave just leave without the drama.

Maybe you should have tried it a different way. Why did you not start a guild yourself and let others join your guild. Share your experienced and knowledge with others. Or do what we did on Drachenfels made a huge alliance with over 35 small and medium guilds. Like this its very easy to find each other and ask for help over the alliance chat. When there is a event is good to let others know that something is going on. That alliance have also made a player run town with more then 30 buildings.

Or play 2 shards like some of us do. I know that the community on Drachs and Napa are very different and both unique in there own ways. And with playing a ueopean shard and a american one there is always someone around to have fun with at any given time. Or calm when you want too.

Sometimes when we want to see things differently you have to start doing it yourself. :)

There are different was to find a guild ...
- ask players around haven (Guilds, that are actively recruiting often hanging around there)
- ask in the new general chat
- try shard specific forums here on stratics
- join the em events and start to talk with parting guilds
- have a look for player run events (dont know about your home shard but some shards are very busy with that: player run auctions, chicken fights and others)
- start public monster hunting (like peerless or illshenar champs: often ppl will join if anyone gives out a call.)
- visit guilds homepages (at ORIGIN - Ultima Online - Community guilds are listed by size/shard and if they have an official homepage they can get it listed there, too)

You found a reason to quit, and now have been compelled to post it publicly to ease your own inner guilt for giving up 13 years of your life.......that's okay, players do it everyday....others just quit and don't look back.

First off, it's a game, on a computer, in your house, apartment, igloo, take your pick. You either have the time to play, or you don't.....maybe you lost interest, maybe your friends quit, and you can't make new ones.

Remember one thing about today's society....it is molding people, especially our young, to be more and more antisocial. Communicating on the phone was once the norm, not no more....it's either text or no text. Pretty lame and sad.
Only positive part about that, they're reading, sort of.....if you call abbreviating every other word reading(laziness)

You will find players who do not want to interact, they don't know how. Blame mommy & daddy for giving in to the punks at an early age.

If you're a social person, you won't miss UO, and maybe find some real interaction, out there in the real world.

One last thing.......what the hell is a "toon?" That is so "nerdy?" "geekish?"
Lame even.

It is a social game. If you want to join a guild you have to have the qualities which that guild wants in its members. If you're finding it hard to join guilds then you should look inward. There isn't a magical force stopping you from joining guilds, just interpersonal criteria. Same goes with calling UO a single player game: It's not the Devs responsibility to match you with other people, you have to go out and be social yourself in such a way that your personality is one which other people want to be around.

Hate the player not the game *shrug*

Edit: Just to be a total ******bag, I would suggest you look to your reasons for posting this in the first place for why you're probably not in a guild.

A widely used and perfectly acceptable piece of terminology used in the RPG world. I dont use it personally but I know what it means, as does anyone else who into this type of gaming. Whilst i dont use it myself, I also dont feel the need to belittle or insult those who do.

You know what's also lame? Not recognizing an ellipsis has only three periods in it. I believe you owe the ellipsis company a refund on your overkill.

To the OP:

Guilds more or less ceased being truly functional, from a necessity stand point, with the release of Trammel. Why bother to coordinate all this hoopla when you can just solo most of the stuff in the game, and buy what you need that you can't solo with the money you made soloing?

Or at least, that seems to be what most of the players these days think. It's a real shame too because in the old days of UO, guilds were an important part of the game.

But, if game stops being worth the subscription price you are paying, you are doing the right thing by ceasing to pay for it any longer.

I'm sorry, but you obviously did not read the "Ask Devs" forum FAQ or UHall before posting.
Rarely anyone gets an answer there, that's one thing.
Another thing is the technical set-up of the forum - you don't see your posts unless they are answered, but visiting Devs see them.
So it's not being "ignored or disrespected" - it's how that particular forum works.

and trammel was created because of the way people responded to being able to kill whoever and whenever they wanted so in the end it was their fault for the way they behaved

weird situation. Guilds galore. calling UO a not-so-social game, when you are the one having trouble finding a guild seems a bit off... Stand in Luna asking for a guild for 5 minutes, join Vent, be "not a jerk" for 5 more, and you got yourself a guild. It is up to you to maintain friendships though... you can't get a SoT Friendships 3.0 from your gold dealer...

Wow!! Quit if you wish and best of luck, but saying you quit because you can't find a Guild is pretty weak! If you really want to join a guild there are lots around that are active both PvM and PvP.....after 13 years you would think someone could figure out a way to be part of a guild--or start one of their own.

Oh....and five posts and just joined Stratics in 2009 after 13 yrs of UO???? Not so sure how ligit this post is!

I started in 2000 and joined statics forums in 2008, there are plenty of players who don't do forums. But honestly I don't believe any 13 year player would quit because of guilds.

Only 13 year vet with the OPs issues are the ones that just relized they been charged for a game they not played in 12 years.

exactly, just an attention addict posting for self gratisfaction. first off you can tell by his use of the english language that he is either foriegn or extremely young. If hes foriegn then yes he has few choices for shards to play comfortably, but he obviously didnt try hard to find a guild seeings how every shard has at least one active guild seeking to add to thier numbers.

The first time I read your post, I thought you meant your characters were somehow bugged. Then I realized you just couldn't find anyone who would put you in their guild without you asking them if you could join first, because it's not that hard to find a guild in UO that wants another player. I don't really think you are a "social person" if you expect everyone to interact with you without you interacting with them. Lame reason to quit.

You're really over analyzing this one, Siteswap. The OP is allegedly quitting because he can't figure out how to join a guild after playing the game for 13 years. That's not worthy of sympathy at all. The OP deserves a good kick in the pants if he isn't able to ask a guildmaster if he can join their guild. I mean come on, are we supposed to feed him Fancy Feast while we're at it?

I checked posting history too. The "been gone a while" post made me think ≠ 13 year vet.
Besides the fact that if you really want a guild or a group to play with and can't find one the problem must be you not everyone else. (Regardless of account age if you can't make friends with people something is wrong)

Given that its rather hard to get in contact with people, then its not completely implausible his story. If there's little activity in Luna and the general chat is dead, then finding guilds in UO is pretty hard.

In the truest sensibility, there is never a need for anger. However, I'm not sure if the OP's post leaves any wiggle room. It's fair to criticize the OP in my opinion. A professor of mine used to tell our class, "Don't send me a poem about your dead mother unless it's good." Harsh as that may be, you have three roads in life: support, ignore, or criticize. Sometimes you have to criticize.

I don't believe it so I'll ask this:
