New Stuff for Fishing!

So I woke up at 2:00am this morning because the dog was barking and needed to poop. I couldn't get back to sleep & decided to train a fisherman! While training, my foggy mind had a few thoughts as it usually does...

Some things that I'd like to see for Fishing would be:

New Fish Types: Like Bass, Perch, Walleye, Stergin (all 3 or so kinds with caviar!), Sharks (Mako, Hammerhead, Great White, etc), and so on. They don't need to have special properties (as items) after being caught, just different colors and new art work, and make them able to be turned into trophies! Note: with the shark, make it so they have to be beaten with a club before they turn into items (this would be cool). All the new fish and sharks should have a size and weight measurement on them when they appear in your backpack (like, "Marlin caught by Fat Lip: 62 Inches - 120 stones".

These new aquatic creatures could be caught at varying levels of skill, and at different depths of water. Such as, all the regular fish (Bass, Perch, Walleye, etc) could be caught at shallower depths by any skill level, Marlins at say 75.0 skill, and sharks at 95.0 to GM.

An Accelerated Gain Quest in Haven: Up to 50.0 skill just like the rest of the skills.

I'll post more ideas as I get them. Please post your ideas for improving Fishing!

Megaladon is a cool idea - never seen one before though...

Another idea I had was to add more cool stuff to make fishing in general less boring (and it doesn't have to be combat).

At the docks you're fishing away, then all of a sudden you get what you think is a bite. You real up something heavy and once you get it on the dock/shore/boat you and all the NPCs around notice that it's a bloated & rotted corpse. The NPCs that notice it could yell somehting like:

- "Ahhh! 'tis a gruesome sight, away with it!"
- "The situation seems quite Fishy indeed."
- "Poor bloak... dib's on his boots!"

When you double click the corpse a backpack could open with several low level items in there, maybe a treasure map, MiB, gems, and a journal you could return to another NPC for a small reward. after all items are taken from the pack the corpse disappears, or it would decay in a few minutes like a monster's corpse.

I don't know why I like this idea so much, but I really would love to see something like this.

A great white snags your line and tows you wherever it will till you get the anchor down?

A whirlpool drags your ship in and you wind up shipwreaked on the nearest shore?

Nice ideas there.
I was never interested in fishing in UO. Seems so incomplete and bland.
I never understood why the prized fish and such gave a slight boost for only 5 seconds (or so) and that a cook can't further enhance them for longer time. Would it kill to make the fish give you +2 mana for 10 min instead?

Would be awesome if the NPC's would make comments as you suggest. I hate how the NPC's have been oblivious to almost everything.

There is so much water in Sosaria it would be nice to have more going on in it!

The OP has a great idea...I would love to have a wall mounted shark above my fireplace!

I like these ideas. Fisherman definitely need some attention. If they do actually make any changes to fishing, I hope one change they make is to lower the drop rate on shoes. It's just a total pain in the butt to deal with. Maybe have a sliding scale where low level fishermen still pull up a ton of shoes, but GM fisherman get virtually no shoes.

I do like the idea of a greater variety of fish - we already have mud puppies & red herrings form the underworld. May there is some way for fishing to tie in some other skills (like treasure hunting requires cartography, lockpicking, maybe mining & some fighting skills) to allow for a complete fisherman template that can chase some higher end loot? MIB chests are like Level 1-3 treasure chests; how about some way to get level 5-6 loot?

They should add in Nessy (Loch ness monster) as a rare creature that can get pulled up with a net.

"You are smacked in the face by a flying fish" -- lose 10 hp

"You snag the bottom" -- can't fish for 2 minutes

"Bad cast...ouch!...you have hooked yourself" -- lose 10 hp & 10 int

"A seagull picks up your bait and flies away" -- can't fish for 2 minutes (this actually happened to me in rl)

We had those (and ogopogo, champ and other lake monsters) show up in an EM fishing event a year or so ago on LA.

We need bait. Hunting chickens for chicken livers comes to mind. Crafting new lure types would be neat. Trolling would be a way to pass the time while working on other skills. How about motor boats? How about a steering icon in place of the taskbar? Something that looks like a steering wheel where you can place your macros.

As far as I know... this has just got to be illegal. And pretty close to impossible to accomplish as well...

Good idea!

Some other bait things could be:

Chum: Alter the fishing nets to select "Chum" from a drop-down menu on the net. Instead of pulling up monsters, it could alternatively pull up a basket or barrel of chum fish (alive) (25 stone weight or so). Use a bladed weapon on it to turn the fish into chum (prepared), then you could throw it overboard in deep water and sharks and tuna (yes, TUNA!!!) would start swimming around the boat (shown by their fins). then you could start fishing for sharks at a higher catch rate than normal.

Worms: Use a pitcher of water on a dirt patch & they would wiggle up from the ground. Double click a new item called a "Bait Pouch" to collect them. The worm numbers could be random between 3 and 5, and the Bait Pouch could hold 20-30 pieces of bait. The bait pouch could be a different color pouch container that has a number of current bait on it then a total bait (like, "7/20"). bait pouches should hold only one kind of bait per pouch.

Crawfish & Minows: Use a new item called a "Bait Net" (Long pole with a circular net on the end) in shallow water to collect crawfish and minows. Select from the net's drop-down menu which bait you'd like to fish for. There could be a bit of randomness to what you pull up, similar to how you "fish for a while but catch nothing" - could also be determined/adjusted by your fishig skill.

Lures: Crafted by Fishermen by using a new tool called something like, a "Fishing Lure Crafting Kit" (new context menu and everything! A tinkerer could use ingots to make some of the parts such as spinners, spoons, and hooks. Could use boards/logs to make beads for decoration on the lures, and you could use spools of thread for tieing them togeather. Regular tailor-bought or woven spools of thread could be used, and dyed by regular dyes and maybe even special dyes for a bonus effect at catching fish. There could be rare lures too, that give higher fishing bonuses & all of the fishing bonuses could raise your Fishing skill above 100.0 when equipt to your pole (like mining gloves).

The fishing lures could increase your fishing skill by the following (just a rough idea to get started with, nothing set in stone):

+1: Lures created by a Fisherman below 75.0 skill.
+3: Lures created by a Fisherman from 75.0 to 99.9 skill.
+5: Lures created by a Fisherman with 100.0 skill using rare lure parts, and special or rare dyes on lure parts.
+7 (or something higher than +5): for using rare lures or magic lures given by quests, crafted, or found from finding someone elses snagged line on a fallen log in the water.

One other thing... when fishing in general with a pole, instead of pulling up just footwear (and corpses!), there could be a chance of pulling up a snagged branch with a lure stuck to it. There could be a wide variety of lures to find in this manner - from common lures, to mid level lures, to very rare lures.

Along with salt water type fish,we should also get freshwater fish. Bass(large and small mouth),stripe, catfish, brim, and crappie. We do have a couple of rivers and lakes in UO. Make use of them.

Edit: haha the new profanity blocker makes me laugh. I have to make sure that I put a space between salt and water....

I don't spend a lot of time in the water at all. I never liked the way boats work, and the ocean is bland. I did two treasure hunts last night (I like the changes... subtle, but nice... love that little grubber guy), then we went and did three SOS's (two were found from the T-hunt). What a difference! The SOS's are so odd. I freakin hate the water and the way it works (there's barely anything in the water for crying out loud. You fish up conch but a cook can't make conch chowder or conch fritters? That would be cool.

I would like to give props on the NEW SONG that plays in the water. A remake of an old Ultima song. Excellent!

Before we even talk about added content and things that might be amazing, but beyond Dev's desire. How bout just a simple overhaul to the already spawning fishing content.

Lets face these facts....

1. Prechest loot is worthless junk. Pictures and pillows are cool, but again, fairly worthless. The rest of the items, body parts, skulls, bones. Is it a wonder why you can't sell an MIB for even 500gp on vendors? Nobody is willing to take the time to fish em up without any valued items

2. Chest loot is junk. Even the ancient sos, the loot is almost all worthless.

3. Sea Serps....theres regular, and deep sea. Why not add some more serps, give them some unique colors to identify them as more powerful. Dread sea serp, something like that, and put some valuable loot on them

4. The anchor and seahorse. Awesome loot. Shame the odds of getting them are next to nil. Stack the low odds of getting them off of an ancient net, with the already hard to find ancient sos spawning mib. Seahorses and anchors are seriously 1000x harder to get than even the best artifacts in the game.

5. Big Fish....just add another color or two, a new name. Doesnt have to be a special new piece of artwork, just tweak em!

These just come to mind in 2 minutes of thought. There is no immediate need for radical changes. But there are a ton of simple, little to no effort tweaks that could make fishing worthwhile.

I love fishing, always have. It is by far how I spend most of my in game time. I love the gamble of the cast. But common. I can't earn much of a living from fishing, which is a shame. Give a fisherman more opportunity to climb up the social ladder here!

A whirlpool drags your ship in and you wind up shipwreaked on the nearest shore?
In the setting for Ultima 5, Captain Johnne doing that led to the Shadowlords being released, so maybe not.

However - if it meant everyone on the ship got taken to an 'unexplored island' and could explore, and maybe hunt new and unique stuff while they were there.....

Your not old enough to have seen one;)
Hehe, noone's old enough to have seen a Megalodon. They went extinct about 1,500,000 years ago (Supposedly). There's been reports in Southern America of a gargantuan shark in the warm, coastal waters, and the description given by fishermen matches that of the Megaladon. No substantial proof has been found though.
The Megaladon was basically the great grand daddy of today's Great White. In comparison to the Megaladon, the Great White is a gold fish. Megaladon grew to a maximum size of 67 feet long, and it literally made Blue Whales into a snack.

And in a summary of whats in the new 'booster',

* A new quest based around finding a special map that then leads you to an 'instance' of a magical island with cursed pirates and other baddies and, of course, cool loot.
I got one right! That almost never happens... :)
