I'd suspect very few. Most of us just want to enjoy playing the game and have a fun time.

Don't get EA started on Punkbuster again. I left when they announced the publish to modify the client for it because I'm not interested in having to give a Company the free run of my hard drive, private files, employer files, and all, just to play a game. Nor am I interested in opening known holes in my firewall and trusting a small company to keep things secure. Particularly when cracking that system would give hackers free access to how many hundreds of thousands of computers of game obssessed people?

EA can do all they want to monitor the client and the info it's sending to the game. If it shows a character taking one step and moving from Britian to Jhelom without a magic spell, they can ban that account, every account linked to that one, and every acount with an address within 100 miles of that accounts address.

The only software I want wandering my system is my anti-virus of choice.

And yes, as you may have noticed, this is one of my buttons. :gun::fight::twak::cursing::flame::bdh::bdh::grrr:

Punkbuster is no longer required. There is something better - They have implemented a 3rd party program detection engine directly into the uo clients. Something totally within their full control which they can customize and tailor to fit their needs.

In fact this has been running for some time now and Cal already have a naughty list and is checking it twice (read: he is reviewing the info).

Many people have similar concerns with punk buster like Tanivar, including myself.

You'd likely be wrong, just by the Stratics polls where cheaters are under represented they're 25-40%.

Then of course you have the cheaters who don't consider themselves cheaters even though they are. Those who use the search sites.

UO could already be doing this and this might just be the anti-cheat system.

Punkbuster has been looked at. The EULA was unacceptable.
The problem is being tackled. I have the patience to wait for the outcome, I know Cal is trying his best to do this right.
Also - it may astound people to know that there are other ways of training skills than 'deathstriking bunnies'. You don't have to train parry by fighting sheep or taming by following bulls either. You can do the whole lot through gameplay. It just takes more effort, imagination and patience.

I difference of perspective I believe.
To me training is part of the game, and should be played as such. To others it's a chore to be gotten through as quickly as possible because they can't possibly 'play' with an untrained character.
I can, and do, train characters while happily playing the game and roaming the land. My tamer, for example, while others were following polar bears around ice island, was taming giant spiders on fire island, avoiding getting poisoned and getting too close to daemon temple nearby. Ok others might find that just as boring as following polar bears. But I didn't, I found it far more fun to lead tame when I had to keep my distance from my target or get bitten.

bottom line is game's evolve and where starting to see more and more games allowing 3rd party's (addon's) and we have alot of older aged players in game that really cant go and mine or lumberjack like us younger players and then you got the kids that live in a world of lazzyness. look at it this way you have two types of cheats in uo you have cheater 1 which uses scripts or cheat eng. or hacks to pvp that is the most number one hated cheat in game am i right? then you have cheater 2 one that goes out and uses a script to mine, lumberjack, or raise his/her skill a little faster to go out pvm or pvp what ever it maybe. as far as on concerned who cares about the players that uses script for mining or lumber jack or evan to work a skill here and there. the main problem that every one is soo pissed about is cheater 1. the players that that speed hack and use scripts to heal or pot up or what.

that is my option

Thats fine, that doesn't make your way any better though and as such, many of us have way better things to spend our time on. Thankfully I don't have to worry about that or cheat to get there, but if I didn't have what I had, then I'd sure go that route no problem and I don't condemn anyone for doing so.

Heck, it was once a legit part of games and most games had cheat codes and hacks.

EA haven't released any information on it, From the number of users on certain script sites and just polls that have been around, I'd guess 30-40% of accounts.

If we were betting, I would say, you could easily double that figure. But we would also have to clarify, are we talking active, scripters or are we talking about anyone who fired it up in the last 6 months?

Personally, I think we need some kind of scripting mechanism in UO, I am getting old an I want to save my wrists and fingers (to damn much clicking needed)

The real problem with scripting came when UO GM's dissapeared and the AFK scripting went unstopped for YEARS. The flaming house ban was tolken, as it did not address the issues. ( AFK scripting and the mind numbing carpel tunnel system that is UO crafting and resource gathering ) :(

I don't think there's any way to know, not everyone who is believed to be scripting or hacking actually is. Quite often it's simply a case of knowing more about how the game works. For example a GM once took my husband's char outside of the Labyrinth to inform him he had been paged on 3 times in the past hour. He wanted to re-assure my husband that no action would result from these pages as he was clearly doing nothing wrong. He was reported for being able to heal through poison and mortal - on a samurai.
He has also been paged on for having an 'infinite mana hack' on his mage - his mana pool being the result of 120 focus/medi + MR items. No hack required.
Then of course there are the pvp gods who are so convinced of their own supremacy that anyone who manages to defeat them has to be cheating - no further proof required.

If that's the way you feel about it (I understand your concerns on security), you should ensure that you never run any program on your PC that makes an encrypted connection to any server you are not in complete control over.... not just punkbuster...

This would include any online game, any online gambling program that requires an install (such as most poker sites require), etc, etc...
The reason being that you have absolutely no way of knowing what data that program is actually transmitting back to base...

EG - How can you be certain that UO, right now, isn't trawling everyone's PC for all their precious information? Answer - you can't be certain.
As soon as you open up your firewall for anything you didn't write to communicate through, you take a risk - it really boils down to who you choose to trust.

If the word you are looking for is 'law', then which countries/states laws apply? the ones where the server is based, or the one where the player is based? or the one where the company is based? or all three, or none of the above?
Is it civil law or criminal law?
How do you know they are obaying the law?
(afterall, when Google collected all those WiFi details during their streetmap project, turns out it was against the law, but then it also turned out that deleting them was too... DOH!)....

These are really retorical questions - of course, most companies obey the applicable laws, but the point I'm making is that you personally have no way of knowing that they are doing.

Whatever gave you that idea? Quite a number of husband/wife father/son etc combos have Stratics accounts at the same ip.

What you can't do is use an alt to perpetrate some kind of scam, like bidding up your own auctions, or to evade an infraction. Eg it's been known for someone to create an alt and post in an extremely unacceptable manner while believing they are safeguarding their normal posting account.

Do a search on your pc for 'metrics.txt'. Something we all agreed to years ago.

Yes, because working on skills is so fun. One time I was training ninjitsu and I was "enjoying and having so much fun" watching my character deathstrike a bunny for days and days on end. I had so much fun. Fun fun fun.

The game was never intended that people stand around banging on golems and such to learna skill, You are supposed to PLAY the game to learn your skill. (What a concept) And yes, you are supposed to die ALOT as you explore and grow. The ability to "train" on a golem has led to much of the decline in the game IMO. It took me 8 months to GM Magery - why? Because I played the game - I didnt stand around in Haven spamming spells while holding a wand!

Lets be honest as well.

UOA allows macros to be recorded allowing you to perform complex or repetitive tasks easily and almost hands free.

The EC allows you to do the same thing

The new crafting gump allows you to train with a single click (make Max).

To me all mining locations require Mobs, so they cant AFK anymore. It messes with the economy...well its actually ****ed the economy. The more supply with = demand = less value. This undervalues the true players work.

Remember, people actually used to PLAY crafters! To play a crafter means you play ALL that it entails, including the resource gathering.

All you are required to do is be there, you need to be there to pull resources. Or keep the macro playing.

If all the script sites where gone i wouldnt mind and i use them all the time to train. I have never modified a client or my speed and yes those 2 are things i dont like and consider cheating.

I still pvp on mages who are not trained. I enjoy it, makes it enjoyable.

Basically, you are lazy and dont want to spend any amount of time training. You can still accomplish almost any and all aspects of the game with underdeveloped toons...i know this because i was doing it on Siege for a while.

<laugh> The 'better thing' is to play the game. :)

The game is set up so that it's playable from zero skill. You don't have to 'train up' your skills to be able to play UO. All you have to do is make a character and go hunt things appropiate to your characters skill.

When SA was released I made a gargoyle and played to raise his skills after npc training him (o.k. o.k. <g>). I have his skills near max now, by just playing the game, and had a ton of fun doing it. There were things I hunted and places I hadn't been for 8 or 10 years that I had fun seeing and doing again.

The only skill on the gargoyle that had to be repeatively trained sitting in one spot was Poisoning. That I've been working at off & on for years and finally got to 80 & soulstoned it to him. It took years because I have serious Artheritis and such and even with all UOA could do to help, the training was less than fun. I don't mind the pain when I am somewhat distracted from it by playing the game. Which is why I train skills by playing the game.

If you have to have high or max skill to enjoy playing the game. Thats your loss. <shrug>

I actually enjoy creating new characters and training them up from scratch, gearing themselves out, etc.

Some people like this, some people don't. Some people like UO as is, some people want a classic shard. Some people like pepsi, some people like coke.

In all these cases, nobody is right, and nobody is wrong. It is all just individual tastes. It still amazes me that so many people cannot see any other opinions or viewpoints except their own as valid.

As far as punkbuster goes, it is a dead swamp dragon, having received far more than its share of beatings with a cavorting club. I do, however, look forward to the next move by EA/Mythic in regards to cheaters.

See power gamers, meta gamers, min/max'rs, cheaters (I'm not saying Olcher is a cheater, but he is defending cheating in his post), they all get bored. You know why they get bored? Because they don't play the game. Instead of going out and doing something fun to train that ninja skill, they deathstrike a bunny for days on end, and then complain that skill training is boring... Well, duh!

Newsflash: you chose the most boring way possible to train your skills, so guess who is responsible for the process being boring? You, and no one else...

So Llewyn, do you build your own cars from scratch? Did you build your house/apartment from scratch, did you build your refrigerator from scratch? etc.

Or did you buy them?

For most people, its getting to the point where you can live, where you can drive, where you can put your food in the fridge that counts, not going through all the tedious efforts trying to create it.

Yet some people love working at an assembly line, assembling cars or refrigerators. Some love to build houses, etc.

That reads like a reasonable come back, but it isn't. There are legitimate ways to buy skills in this game, without resorting to cheating. You can buy an advanced character token, in or out of game, and you can buy sots. Your argument reads more like an excuse for cheaters, which is what it actually is.

Basically if you are bored in UO, it's your own fault, and it's because you chose to do boring things, or you chose to make interesting and challenging activities easy and boring, by doing things like resorting to cheats. If absolutely everything in the game bores you, it is time to find a different hobby, not use that as an excuse to cheat.

I am not bored with UO at all, I am having fun in UO. But training skills is mindnumbingly boring. Sure you can buy SOTs and ACTs, but if you want to get to GM-120, they're going to get incredibly expensive real fast.

*Munches on his Eggo* hmm? Oh, how many people cheat? I would say a Good amount but its a whatever thing. Most of the cheats being used I believe they will find in the areas of Crafting, Peerless, Champ and Doom. You dont need to cheat to PvP just use the overpowered god template and smash your opponent like a bug and EM Invasions for that matter. Cheers!

I fall into this area. I pay $13 a month on five accounts. I want to feel like i am geting something out of my $60 a month even if iam unable to sit at the computor. Working skills and doing other non pvp/pvm relaterd task makes me feels like i am getting my $60 worth. Maybe if i get banned and stop drinking so much i could have an extra $200 to $300 a month. While I don't agree with your stance on scripting, etc..., I do believe you make a good point here. Every time the designers jump to a new region the older regions tend to be forgotten...and those older regions (mostly Tram/Fel) are where all the training takes place. So now you have any new/returning players training in regions that don't accurately reflect the objectives of the game. How is this a good idea?
