Have there been any significant player initiatives in promoting UO?

I think it's in our own interest to get involved somehow. Apparently EA don't want to showcase UO, so we won't ever see boxes on shelves, cover discs, magazine spreads, or commercial other media ads.

But there are free alternatives to these outlets. I wonder if we could do any good promoting the game ourselves.
...

lol At your banner.

When SE came out, I came back to the game and tried to get my friends to play with me and they said "You're playing that old PoS?" (They played when it first came out.)

Recently when I returned again, I told my friends about it and they were like "Thats nice..." then when I told them about the new stuff and changes, and told them they should create a TRIAL ACCOUNT, they said "F NO! The game is crap."

Even after talking up the new stuff.

90% of that comes from the dated graphics, and I play the EC so I was telling them about the newer graphics as well.

Face it, people just don't want a game that looks like UO when they can play halfway decent games for free like The Silk Road.

I still play the X:COM games, plus a few other "classic" games.

Perhaps targeting a "niche" market of retro-gamers perhaps?

There's enough around to make it worthwhile, otherwise why would there still be so much interest in the "abandonware" sites?

Also, I wonder what age groupings the average players of UO are? I would venture a guess that the majority are 30+ perhaps.

Interesting also, that some of us probably sound like our parents did about music, when we refer to great gameplay and older games. Funny how things work out like that.
I think abandonware games are popular because.. they are free. Id play eye of the beholder probably. Would I pay 5 bucks for it? Unlikely.

Yeah the music thing is kinda funny, old age really creeps up on a person eh? I actually don't even like most of the music I used to ironically. :p
Interestingly though, have a browse through some of the "old games" websites. Increasingly more older games are only available for purchased downloads. Usually no more than a couple of dollars mostly. That indicates there's sufficient demand for someone to buy up the rights to what was considered abandonware, in order to profit from their popularity.

...

You also don't see the original X-Com games (mentioning original here to differentiate from the upcoming X-Com title) being actively advertised either.

As for music, post-grundge, witrh a few exceptions here and there, music has really gone down the toilet in quality... at least IMO.
Nope, you don't see the older or "classic" games being advertised, unless someone has bought up the rights to them, in order to profit from their enduring popularity.

Most "publicity" comes from forums and websites that host them, be they for purchase, or for free.

Music... I like most things rock. Can't abide the same rinse and repeat "talent" show manufactured crap. rolleyes:

^^ UO already has had a 3D client, called the 3D client, which was axed. Also KR and EC "takes advantage of 3D-accelerated special effects."

... so dont assume that NetDragon is going to develop a 100% real 3D client just because "3D" was in the press release.
That can sometimes be the problem. Suggestion of a 3D environment, might not be the sort of 360º 3D environment that's used in a lot of modern games, but an isometric 3D view, much like UO, but with more 3D rendered creatures and items, over the 2D rendered stuff we see in UO.

Must admit though, I quite liked the Third Dawn client. That was a step forward that they could have worked with over the years, instead of taking a step back towards the 2D content.

Although I support the "classic" game play UO offered, I've also always supported any advances in the game client. So long as the core of the game play is good, a new client is just the tool to access and play the game. Improvements to the user interface and the "polished" look of a game, are always an important factor for retaining or attracting players though.

X-Com and grunge music?! Is this the best thread ever? I think it is.

What's the new X-Com though? God, I loved X-Com. When I got UFO Defense I got it out of a bargin bin at random and fell in . Apoc my fave, real-time was so amazing. I still play it every so often but lack of support sucks.

Listening to ANYTHING on the radio, agree for the most part. Even satellite sucks. Gotta get off the grid and out of the norm to find anything decent. There is tons of good stuff out there that will never be played on the radio.

Google around G.v.P. because there's a few sites around that offer mods, patches and fixes for all the X-Com games. Still have to run them all in DosBox as far as I'm aware, but some of the fixes are easy enough to paste into the game directories.

I actually still have all the boxed originals, along with all the boxed releases of UO and assorted other games I could never bring myself to sell or throw out. rolleyes:

Opinion galore. As gods in controle of parrallel multi-universes, maybe we could find out who is correct - F2P, Advertise, Overhaul etc etc. All options... All good ideas.

So hard to change anything in this game though because we *are* vets and you can't please all the people all the time...

Agree there. Being originally from Nashville, TN, I know all about the small acts that have real talent that will NEVER get solid airplay.

Here ya go

They should come up with an advertising campaign partnership with imported beer companies. The best time to sell a 13-year old game is after you've had a few.

Thanks guys :) yeah I run DosBox I think to play Apocalypse and some other stuff, but even with all of the emulation and all I still have burst moments where it speeds up crazy hehe :p but as perfect as it will get. Wish there was an actual OS that was native and still supported.

Ah, I never got into the first-person X-Com games so I guess I won't be checking out "XCom," unless it is really amazing. Hopefully a company will create a new version of X-Com strategy based w/ that lovely isometric view. I did, at one time, find someone who made a new X-Com like game, but the play wasn't that great (you get what you pay for, in this case, it was a free program, so, haha).

You could always check out the new UFO series, Aftermath, Aftershock, and Afterlight, They're not quite as good as the old X-Com, but they are a good fix for that kind of game. Not free, but they're relatively cheap on gamersgate, maybe on Steam.

I've toyed around with getting one of those games :). I have a few games I should probably beat first before I invest in anything right now, lol. Are the "after" games buggy at all? I thought I read about one of them being buggy, per Amazon.com reviews? And I apologize, lol, I should get back to the topic of this thread, advertising UO, I know...

I dun recall hitting any particular bugs in my After- games... But there are patches and what-not, company- and community-made, that probably ironed any large bugs out (I patched my games, har.)

On-Topic-Ish:
Update graphics, tbh, before advertising. Personally, I like the 'classic' 2D look, even though I could swear that the game's colors looked... More full? Lush? They just seemed a lot brighter pre-2000, I dunno, that might be nostalgia or the caffeine-laced memories of youth. But the amount of people that would likely see UO - and have never been exposed to it before-hand - are liable to pass the game on the merits of the graphics alone; sad but true, when people will /ragequit on Alan Wake because they counted pixels in a screenshot and zomg it isn't high enough (before the game was even released, and not in a jesting fashion.) The generated revenue isn't likely to surpass the cost of advertisement.

I know some years ago, one of the forumers here in Stratics posted images of higher pixel-count images or some-such from the game - Even accepted screenshots that some folk took and updated them; those looked -amazing- and while it wasn't a massive overhaul, they were a clear improvement and looked extraordinarily nice, and I seem to recall people at the time wondering why EA wasn't doing that. I don't suppose anyone knows what I am talking about, maybe has the images saved away or the whole stonkin' thread?
