The music may be classic, but after hearing the same songs so much I got tired of it and turned it off a long time ago. I like my music a bit better :)

It is not that I don't like the music because I do. It just gets redunant annoying and sometimes it doesn't work right on the classic client.

Depends on my mood. so for me its both. If I am cleaning house and deep in chests in one of the casltes I put on my sound for music and play tunes from the music box.

Many are very soft and relaxing.

UGH... I hate the battle music. That overrides any other music, and gets a bit tedious after a few years. I've found that if I use a macro to attack instead of manually entering war mode, the battle music doesn't play.

I voted it depends on the character. It also depends on the shard I am playing upon atm or which town I am entering.

For example normally I enjoy the UO music, but my home on Chesapeake is right up against the down town Zento wall. :) Music is OFF or I would keep hearing the Zento music every time my chr. moved around even in my house. That is when the music can get TOO annoying thus it is OFF.

Now on Siege, I deliberately placed a home right slap up against the Trinsic town wall, I LOVE the new Trinsic city music. With that chr. I turn the music ON. I put that home there just TO hear the newer downtown Trinsic music. :)

Ocllo town tune can get annoying in seconds MUSIC OFF. IF I am going into Serp. Hold UO town music will be always ON ! :)

I got my favorite music I guess, for those I turn music ON, for the rest, it usually is OFF.

I had to turn off the music from the music box because it would cause client crashes. :(

I have no UO music Files in a sense file names are there, I replaced the Mp3's with my own Mp3's and change it out every month or so or when I get tired of a song.

For the first time in a couple years, I turned on my music last night. After about 10 minutes, I turned it off.

I usually have it on my roleplaying characters, No idea why, But I quite like it.

However on my other characters I usually have music off as I'm listening to other music or the Big Brother live feed. *ducks* Its a good programme thank you very much! :D

I tried to select the "I listen to Rush, Jethro Tull, Molly Hatchet, Led Zeppelin, Tool, Journey, Sunny Day Real Estate, Ian Anderson, Leading the Blind, Boston, and some Firesign Theatre" selection, but could not.

Silly Poll.

First off, after hearing the same game song for the fourth or fifth time, I start wanting to tear my eyes out and bottom cap my ears with cement. Second, I am very sound dependent in my game play. The in game sounds can convey a lot of information, and some of them are pretty quiet. Playing music at the same time interferes with that.

Music off, usually I'm either watching something on the TV/monitor or in Media Player depending on if it's something that I want to watch on broadcast TV or something I downloaded to watch, listening to Pandora, or listening to Winamp (if Pandora is on an "I don't like this" run). (Yeah, call me old school as I prefer Winamp over iTunes)

Turn off 30 sec after the game was install, I hate that music. Plus I can I hear my own music or TV with all that sound form the game. Even most of my Hunting have low sound, expect from major hunting where monster have special move. This way ppl in my house don't get anyone from the game sound. Their is enough sound coming out of my mouth, no need to add anymore form the game. :)

Since they never bothered to fix the persistent swamp or ocean sounds when you left those areas (CC) I opted for sound off.

I read a developer that once said World of Warcraft started out with a couple hours of music and that it was expanded up to over 18 hours.

UO has less than 1 hour and half the tracks are less than a minute long.

It is easy to see why players will turn off UO music.

Off.

* Generic music (SE, ML)
If I want to listen to the current UO:SE tracks I can play Civ III (and IV) as the Japanese.

Though I don't really have much of a choice as Wine still doesn't play nice with Pulse Audio. I can either listen to UO and nothing else or everything else on my PC but UO. Easy choice.

*Good to hear from the Lord of Fiery Death & Destruction

While they're not UO themes specifically Draconi, look up Ultima V Lazarus as they've taken a LOT (if not all) of the classic Ultima tunes (specifically for U5) and did the full treatment for them coming up with a really SWEET sounding soundtrack. U5: Lazarus is in my Winamp list because of this (and if the music files wouldn't have been integrated into the EC, probably would have replaced the UO music there as well).

Off.

The main reasons are:
* Short and repetitive tracks
* Broken sound system in 2D client messes up playback times (turning on/off/transitioning)
* LBR expansion replaced many beautiful tracks with crud
* Loss of the original themes to U9 themes
* Generic music (SE, ML)

About the only tracks I really like are the original ones and the various interpretations from Michael Gluck.

It's really a pity that no one's taken the original UO themes in MIDI and given them the full treatment. Not orchestral - that wouldn't be very Ultima, but some good, compelling pieces derived from the originals with good instrument samples.
Nice to see you posting! One of my favourite MIDIs was one called 'Forest', I'd let it play all day!

Speaking of original UO music, I uploaded my MP3 conversions of all the original MIDI tracks that I use in my Youtube videos. Or you can download the original MIDI files which are no longer available in today's client. You can find them at:

First thing I do on any new install is get rid of the combat music, but everything else is fine on my ears. Every so often I'll copy and paste the original music files, but I'm not necessarily averse to more recent tracks.

Of course, I'm not crazy about any of it. I have played many indie titles through the years that beat UO's musical score, hands down, with far fewer resources. Pox Nora is a good example of an online fantasy title (it was indie before Sony bought it). So is the single-player Fate; even though it relies heavily on stock soundtracks, it's far easier on the ears than some of UO's original tracks.

I'm sure we can all agree (the players as well as the devs) that there should be a more comprehensive selection of longer, less grating and less repetitive tracks. Also, greater care should be made to ensure that tracks fit the locations that trigger them (or consider implementing an in-game player).

I have it off, although I like the music of the Enhanced Client very much. The reason is simple: Music in the EC is broken since 2 years and hasn't been fixed. Sometimes it just stops playing. Sometimes battle music loops forever. And battle music cannot be turned off, I simply don't want to hear that all the time.

Updated Midi's? Yea. True Instrumental? Nope :(

To answer the Original post:

I took all of the various older UO music, and some of the better Ultima game's Music, then put them into the music config file, and mixed it so that the music is chosen from a random selection of appropriate songs for the given location. In other words, going into Britain wont repeat the same stupid song over and over unto insanity, but rather pick randomly of various Britain songs.

Not perfect, but it doesn't suck nearly as much as the default :)

it's a catch22 for me. I can't listen to the music box songs without turning music on. but the default music for uo is simply terrible. waaaaaaaay too much pretend drama in that default music imho. I'm not complaining though :p

If you want to really get "meta" (as opposed to "metal") with your music, try replacing the music files in the game with music from other games or TV shows ABOUT games. I do keep my music on (see the last paragraph as to why), but occasionally I'll set it low volume or off to listen to other stuff.

For example, there are certain anime that I have playlists for playing during my UO session; the ".hack" series of games/anime are a good example, being 3 anime and corresponding console games ABOUT people playing in a VR MMORPG. There are a number of instrumental and marginally vocal tracks that work well. (and the anime series themselves are interesting, with some of the same concerns for characters (outside of the main plotline) as most of us - including the occasional instance of the characters talking OOC about real life, and even a player's son logging into the game on his father's account, to inform his friends that the father had passed away).

Other series/movies I listen to music from are the Lodoss War series (TV & OAV), various Studio Ghibli movies (the original scores, though I'd like to get some of the rearrangements that Disney did for their dubs), and western movies such as Legend. Sometimes I'll even mine to "Gold Fever" and "The Best things in life are dirty" from "Paint your wagon".

IMO, turning music off does NOT affect certain things - like the old music related crash bug which were apparently triggered by the music TRIGGERS, not the music actually playing, and it took having the music playing to give you a few seconds warning (during which you COULD still recall, have time to invis, and/or type something like "hey, cover me while I restart - the client is crashing!"). In that old bug (which only got fixed sometime during the time period that Draconi was working on UO), all having the music off did was guarantee you'd get caught flat-footed by the crash.

There also appears to be a crash problem, still occuring, from the audio settings of all your other software clashing with UO - even with music and sound turned off in UO. The only way I found to resolve it was, when possible, change the KHz rate of the other software's sound to where it didn't conflict with the client's default (which is easy enough for things like Quicktime/iTunes, winamp, WMP and most other software that is designed for audio, but not for things that produce sound as a side effect).

I usually have the music on. When I switched to EC I turned it off because of the horrible music transitions and repeating music that would not stop. (thank goodness my Dawn's music box could override)
EC has had an improvement to the music this year. I've noticed... better transitions. But still lacking.

The Stygian Abyss music had potential, but 30 second tracks?? Seriously??

I use to always have it off because Luna music annoys the crap out of me. I have it on now because our Event Moderators use it to set the mood of the EM event.

EMs can trigger global music tracks? I didn't know that. But I like how you mention Luna as if you just started playing the game, Gareth ;P.

I have the music off mostly, although occasionally on to check on how well pets are obeying... sadly at 110/110/120 T/V/L I get too many honks on bane dragons! But sometimes... sometimes I listen to a playlist of all the OLD Ultimas, which as includes the UIX sound track so shamelessly pilfered for Ultima Online. So I have the UO sounds both on AND off! :p

Failing the original music, you simply can't beat the following, whilst engaged in a little PvP.

Pretty simple poll.
reluctantly OFF because warmode music always stays the same 20 seconds of strings (except in tokuno) and luna is frikkin crap crap crap.

shame because loads of the UO music is lush (dagger isle, trinsic, twisted weald etc etc) and a little tweak would make this awesome!

Oh, in the music config file. just delete the ", loop" if it's after a song.
