People aren't demanding a classic shard for the sole purpose of griefing other players. Believing this is just utter nonsense. People want a classic shard because they want to experience what made UO special.
1. A living, breathing world.
2. Player cooperation and interaction
3. The thrill of the hunt
4. The risk of heading out with choice weapons and armor
5. The fear of the unknown
6. The adrenaline rush of meeting an imposing monster or foe in the field
These are all things a classic shard could bring. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but UO's population certainly is not what it used to be. You can blame it on the graphics engine or EA's lack of support on the game prior to SA, but I feel UO lost something special when AOS came out.
What happened to heading up to the Britain smithy and chatting with people while your armor gets repaired? Gone. Why? Infinite durability on items and insurance.
What happened to the need to group and take on powerful creatures or the need to cooperate? Not really necessary. Thanks to the items and artifacts, as well as the 0% risk of losing them save for a bug or no money in the bank to pay insurance, players are veritable gods and can solo close to 95% of the content this game has to offer. In what game, especially an MMO, should a character be able to solo an end-boss?
Where's the adrenaline rush of a challenge or the fear of the unknown? When players can down Dragons, Ancient Wyrms, or Daemons in a matter of seconds, how does one feel apprehension when first seeing a truly powerful foe? Or the long sigh when you won the day and survived, perhaps only by a small margin? Where is the danger?
What is so wrong if EA implements a Classic shard? Half of you have already swore up and down that you have no interest in playing it, so why do you care if EA spends development time to please a potentially large portion of the playerbase? How does this affect you? You guys managed to stick through years of no new content because EA was shifting staff about the country, so why can't you stick it through here? Why is it so hard to let the other guy have some time in the limelight? Lord knows he's earned it.
The demand for a classic shard, whether you believe it or not, is out there. It really is. You think it's bad here with the amount of pro-classic shards floating about? Head over to sites such as MMORPG.com, Somethingawful.com (MMO category), or Gamespot. Places where whenever UO is uttered, former players come out of the woodwork and reflect on how such a tremendous experience UO was for them back in the day, and how they mourn what it has become. Sure, it's anecdotal evidence, and tough to prove unless you see it with your own eyes, so go ahead and look it up for yourself.
But please, don't be that guy. Don't stymie a change simply because you don't agree with it. This game needs something. Can you honestly say that UO is doing well? Sure, it's still up and running after a remarkable period of time, but where is everyone? Where is everyone celebrating this remarkable piece of online history? I see countless complaints from other posters here about the lack of population. Wouldn't you want to consider ALL options to try and bring people back into the fold?
How will new graphics help to draw players and keep them? If you recall, people weren't leaving in droves because of the game's aging graphics. It was a change in design philosophies. Seeing the massive success of other games like Diablo, Everquest, as well as the World of Warcraft beta and its popular features, our UO devs in their wisdom believed if they emulated these games that this would help draw in fresh blood. This philosophy of shelving originality in favor of designing a game that was like everything else is what killed UO.
EA has tried on two separate occasions to bring UO into the realm of 3D, and both have failed. Why will it work this time?
I know all of you guys are decent folk. You just want to enjoy your game and be left alone to your own devices. Why rock the boat if you're happy with what's in place? I find no fault with this whatsoever. But maybe this game needs a swift kick in the arse?
