There are other reasons Factions have become so popular.
(1). You honestly can't beat being able to put your opposition in stat for 20 mins, it adds a whole new level of excitement to PvPing.
(2). Guarding sigils is a great way to get lots of people in one area. It can make for some very interesting fights.
A little over a year ago UO introduced new faction armor in order to get more people involved in factions. That was a huge encouragement for people to join. Basically, faction armor pieces are "arties" with extra mods on them. They make it incredibly easy to build killer suits (literally) with these pieces. Especially if you incorperate imbued armor.
There are 4 different factions (2 evil and 2 good) that are constantly at war with each other to encourage good healthy PvP. The factions are: The Shadowlords(Evil),The Followers of Minax(Evil), The Council of Mages(Good), and The True Britannians(Good).
Ultima Online keeps a scoreboard of the top ranked guilds and players in each faction (http://town.uo.com/factions/factions_0.html) In order to give these hard working individuals some much deserved attention, I had a little chat with each of them.

Factions are an integral part of Player versus Player in Ultima Online. These days, PvP basically revolves around factions. Putting the enemy in stat when doing spawns or harrowers is a good way to ensure you will walk away successfully with your power or stat scrolls in hand.

I first sat down with Mordecai of TF+R (TB), ranked number one for his faction but also the point leader on Atlantic.
First of all, congrats on being ranked number 1 for your faction and the Atlanic shard!
Mordecai: Thanks, a lot of killing involved lol!
What template do you play?
Mordecai: I play a Mystic Mage with Ninja!
What is your favorite thing about factions?
Mordecai: I honestly like how you can put a person out of a fight for 20 mins, not only that but the faction arties are really too good to pass up!
What do you dislike about factions?
Mordecai: I dislike the faction point system ranging out of control. When I say that, I mean having millions and some cases billions of points is just way too much! So I guess what I'm trying to say is the point system is a little awkward.
What would you like to see implemented in the new faction system?
Mordecai: I would be pleased to see a different scale on the points, also maybe different faction animals would be really nice! What I mean by that is not just faction horses, maybe add ozzys,llamas etc.
Good idea! You like the colors or you think they should be different?
Mordecai: I don't think the colors are equal at all, I mean the Minax faction horses obviously look the best but they ruined the Shadow Lord horses. Maybe new colors would be a great idea!
Who do you admire the most in your faction and your opposing factions and why?
Mordecai: I admire Chad the most AKA Muffin McNasty, simply because hes a west coast pvper yet he can out play just about anyone I know in this game east and west pinging 100's+. He really is a great guy. Opposing faction I would have to give it to Ngraskel for the soul reason he actually will fight you on any terms 1vs1 and to be honest, he is actually a really good pvper himself. I think he just plays with the wrong group of people!
If you only had one word to describe your faction fighting style what would it be?
Mordecai: I would have to say I have a rather mellow pvp style. I'm usually really calm and collective, taking into my surroundings really well, just trying to get a feel of how everyone else plays. One word? GREATNESS.

Draco: Thank you
What template do you play?
Draco: I play an archer tamer. Even though people don't like it much, it does the job by putting them into stats, and thats what I care about.
What is your favorite thing about factions?
Draco: My favorite thing would be that you get to fight more people! There aren't that many reds anymore for my blue to kill. I like to fight, that's my main thing in the game, and yes I do have other templates for those who are wondering!
What do you dislike about factions?
Draco: That if you die you gotta wait 20 minutes for your stats to go back to normal.
What would you like to see implemented in the new faction system?
Draco: I would like it for them to make it so that you can fight factions in Fel and Tram, that would make the game more interesting in my opinion.
Who do you admire the most in your faction and your opposing factions and why?
Draco: Hmm, who do I admire the most, thats a hard one. For my guild, definately Verdivier. When it comes to opposing factions I respect those who fight legit. Most of the time you can tell who is speedhacking, or using some type of script or art mod, when they pass through tombstones, so on and so forth. I have no respect for those people. Its a game play it legit!
If you only had one word to describe your faction fighting style what would it be?
Draco: ANNOYING =P

Sexy Sonja: Well the template that I play that seems to make so many people angry is Sexy Sonya, she is a Stealth Spirtspeak Ninja Archer..
What is your favorite thing about factions?
Sexy Sonja: My Favorite thing about factions would be the huge fights and teamwork! Teamwork is a must in factions!
What do you dislike about factions?
Sexy Sonja: Hmm, I really dont have any dislikes about factions you can say stat lost but I think that is nice 20 min break hehe.
What would you like to see implemented in the new faction system?
Sexy Sonja: I would really like to see defenses at the bases like a tier system where you can place cannons at the front of the bases and different kinds of traps through the base as your base ranks up in tier!
Who do you admire the most in your faction and your opposing factions and why?
Well I really have to say I admire everyone in my faction. they're a great group of people, fun to play with. For the opposing factions well I would have to say TDT has came a long way in factions, they seem to have the teamwork down pat.
