I spent a little time going through the individual shard boards today on Stratics. Much to my surprise I found quite a few threads titled 'Returning Player' or 'Thinking of coming back!' and a few others along that line.

I wonder what it is that's causing that 'switch' to flip on people to say, "You know- I've been gone for 5 years- I'm ready to go back."

Do you think it's the state of the other MMO's out there, or is it UO itself that's causing some old schoolers (and first timers) to return?

For me it was the state of other MMO's... after trying a lot, finding a few good ones... they ended up only holding my interest so well for various reasons... so I said F it and came back to Ultima, much to Gareth's dismay. :)

This was pretty much our reasoning too. It's not like I tried 1 MMO, or 2. I tried, literally like 10 or more MMO's during my 5 year hiatus from UO.

It seemed to me it was a lot of the same stuff, over and over. All of the same fail interfaces, the same level grinds...just failness.

The biggest thing for me was how MUCH there is to do here in UO, without having to necessarily dedicate 1102834234089034908234 hours of gametime each and every day.

With Ultima Online it has always been the community that has kept me around. I keep things interesting by not always doing things as they come out. I am still on ML play style while I haven't touched much of SA.

For me it was the player towns that have kept me around for the long time. Before the township recognition program was put in.

Only recently have I started doing all the things I do now, which keeps me busy all the time.

As I have mentioned before, the community here is second to none.

Our reception has been fantastic. Offers of help from people I barely knew are coming in from all over the place.

UO just feels right. I'm sure there are a lot of quirks, but there still seems to be a sense of adventure here that is not lost on the 'grind' or endlessly beating your head against the same scripted encounters.

For me the bottom line is this. Nothing beats the free will of uo.

I've played a lot of other games, with darkfall coming in strong for a uo supplement. However i always come back to uo. The graphics suck, theres bugs and glitches. There is always something to complain about, yet i always log on. You can be a murderer one minute and a treasure hunting fisherman the next. I don't know there is just something about this game that has me hooked.

I will say that a break every now and again is needed, especially if you pvp heavily, but that's what counter strike and x box are for. :D

This is exactly how I feel, but I coudln't put it into words.

I wanted to like this. Strangely, much of the BiC population back in 2004 were waiting anxiously for this game to come out. We just downloaded this game for the first time a few weeks ago. I was not a fan.

However i always come back to uo. The graphics suck, theres bugs and glitches. There is always something to complain about, yet i always log on.
It's funny to me that the same people are still fussing. 5 years gone and it's the same fussers on UHall.

The one thing that has me continuing gaming, of any kind, is community.

It was the PvP and RP PvP guilds in old school UO. In all of the games between then and now it was the guild I played with, or some player(s) I knew.

Community, from the smallest pairings to large guilds is what keeps me gaming.

Community is what brings me back to UO.

Oh, and welcome back BiC. :D

I was a very loyal player for several years (99-2005) when I stopped. I just came back in '08 after missing the MMORPG type of game.

It was mainly just wanting to playing the genre. I didn't really try much of anything else because most games do not offer the same elements that UO does.
