Helping with Fame and Karma Calculations

DOH! I can't believe how simple the formula to calculate Fame and Karma gains (or losses) is! You can determine the Fame and Karma level of any creature with just one kill (but multiple kills reduces rounding error).

Here is the formula to calculate Fame/Karma gains from a solo kill:

G = gain
Kc = Creatures Karma (or Fame)
k = your current Karma (or Fame)

G = (Kc-k)/100

that's it! So simple. Well, you have to round off the decimal, but that is pretty much it, and every creature seems to have the same karma/fame, there isn't a range as I had thought. I *believe* that with multiple parties getting kill credit, the gain is just divided by the number getting credit.

You get your character's Fame/Karma from the Loyalty menu, if you don't know where to find it.

So, to calculate a creatures Fame/Karma you just reverse the above formula:

Kc = G * 100 + k

There is some rounding and truncating. For example using a Cu Sidhe I calculated it to be -19,900 Karma (with a range of -19,901 to -19,987). But due to rounding and truncation, -19,900 gives the exact calculation showing Karma (or Fame) gains.

Anyway, Petra Fyde said she still had a lot of holes in her Hunter's Guide for the Fame and Karma of creatures, and I thought that I would help fill some of those gaps. Anyone else wanting to contribute, please either post your results for each creature, or I can calculate it for you if you supply your Fame/Karma level before and after the kill and how many got credit (solo kills are obviously easiest).

Anyone willing to help collect data on creatures that don't have a number in the Hunters Guide?

Creature Name: Fame / Karma
Cu Sidhe: 19,900/-19,900

My head hurts. I think I need coffee and an old algebra textbook.

So you're saying that to calculate a creature's karma, it's as simple as plugging the appropriate numbers in the following formula? (I substituted (Kc - k)/100 for G).

[(Creature's karma - Your character's karma) / 100) * 100 + Your character's karma

I think I'm being too fancy with the math.

Can you provide a few examples please?

Best thing for a headache is a lemon drop - frozen lemonade mix straight, club soda and a good dose of vodka. Trust me, the numbers will make more sense, too!

Let's see, here's what I got from a succubus
(which has a known Fame/Karma of 24,000 each). Checking my Karma, went from 7125 to 7294 after the kill.

G = 7294 - 7125 = 169 Karma gain
k = 7125 (my Karma before the kill)
Kc = Succubus' Karma, which we are looking for

Kc = 169 * 100 + 7125 = 24,025
(close to the 24,000 known value, but different because we are going backwards from rounded numbers)

Going forwards to calculate how much gain we would get, starting with 24,000 Fame/Karma of the Succubus:
G = (Kc-k)/100

G = (24,000 - 7,125)/100 = 168.75 which is rounded up to 169

I'm using an Excel spreadsheet to collect the data, and have the rounding built in, and calculate backwards automatically to verify the rounding.

So, from only a few kills you can get an accurate number of the creatures Fame/Karma! See how easy that was?

Thanks. You're doing exactly what I suspected for calculating G (i.e., calculating the difference between your character's post- and pre-kill karma or fame). I just wasn't interpreting your post correctly.

Chicken Lizard 300 Fame (140->142, Gained A Little Fame; 340 listed)
Chicken Lizard -700 Karma (9204->9105, Lost A Lot of Karma; 696 listed)

Not sure if you round down for Chicken Lizard Karma?

Thanks G.v.P! That helps a lot.

I made an Excel spreadsheet, adding all the unknowns from the Hunters guide and will send that to Petra when mostly complete. I'm getting the Twisted Weald and Prism of Light today.

Hum, I hate to say this, but I do not believe the calculations will continue to hold true as your fame/karma get higher. Reason being... when I had discovered that you can now view your fame/karma under loyalty, I had spent some time watching it while I killed demons for fame. (My numbers are not exact here, just using them as an example.) At around 10,000 fame I would gain approximately 100 points of fame with each demon I killed, but once my fame reached just say around 14,000 points I then found that I would gain only around 10 points of fame per demon. So the higher your fame gets, the less you gain from each creature killed. Once I hit approx 14,000 fame at demons, I found it not even worth killing any more of them because it seems a waste of time with only a couple points of gain.

Maybe you will simply need to add in an additional equation for different fame levels? Or maybe the calculations will continue to hold true if you calculate with your fame under a certain amount?

As far as Karma, I cannot comment on that, my Karma has not budged one bit. I imagine it might if I were to go out and hunt some balrons...

I thought this too... so I went from zero to 22,400 fame/karma killing succubus just to see if it held true. I had ONE, just one odd result with not getting any fame/karma from a kill. Other than that, the results held constant and the calculation worked.

What I am finding hard to get good results on are low fame/karma critters... rounding is a much bigger factor with these.

You are indeed correct!!! My apologies for doubting your hard work before testing it.

I did go over to the demons and jotted down some of the fame gains, and then calculated them out. I had not realized how much of an impact adding the start value back into the equation would have.

Awsome job!!!

No problem, I thought the same thing when I started, and that was the reason for so many kills... that and I need a bit of gold. :)
