how is it generated?
i thought it was simple like every character created got a number and it just increased by one for each new character created on that shard
but i did a test and it doesn't work like that
the character i create second gets a lower number then the character i created first
so how exactly do the numbers work?

i was curious if the number determined the age of the character
why do some people have numbers that are in the hundred thousands and other people have numbers in the twenty millions?

i was going to go through all my characters and figure out which one had the lowest number thinking it would help me figure out which one was the first character i ever created
but now i am confused and wondering how it actually works

i thought it would be fun to create a poll and see where everyones chat number fell into and try to figure out who had the lowest number
and was hoping that the person with the lowest number would mean they were one of the first characters created on that shard
but now i am wondering if the numbers don't actually mean anything and are all just random

Dunno, I just wish there was a way to hide it in chat, as I don't need to see everyones number all the time and it takes up a lot of extra space.

One positive about seeing the number is that it uniquely identifies the player. There could be multiple characters online with the same character name, but they will each have their own ID number. Takes up lots of space, I agree, but can be useful.

one of my characters is 11,922,657 and he was made in early 1998. So not sure if that's true =/

Mine's a 6-digit, just over 600,000... I'm pretty certain it's your unique character ID number... I suspect character ID numbers are created just as any other object number at the time. Not sure if they re-use object numbers... some of the numbers are a bit staggering. hehe

As with most numerical ID number systems, it's probably generated randomly and has nothing to do with anything your character did or when it was made. It's random, and it's there to identify your character for anything that might break the ToS since characters can have the same name.

Showing the number also lets you know if someone is trying to impersonate someone on global chat.

2nd char <47047728>
3rd char <47047457>

the first four numbers are the same but the last 4 numbers are different
looks like they are going backwards
i dont know why that is
i thought they would be getting bigger not smaller
my next test will be to create 1 char every hour and see if the front numbers change at all

Yeah, it's not really a unique ID if it starts at 1, right? Did you think for a second that a Random Number generator for an ID system would also rule out using that number again? But that's just too logical right?

It's not getting bigger because the identification part of the number is random. There are probably many parts to the number, kind of like a telephone. And those last 3 numbers would be the actual ID.

maybe we didn't get those numbers assigned to us until we logged in after it went live? The character I had since 98 wasn't logged in until not too long ago. then again his number is in the 60,000,000 range. a lot higher than MrAliens...

My characters numbers are close to these numbers:

created month as decimal = A
Created year thousands and hundreds = B
Created year tens and ones = C
take each letter in name and convert ascii to decimal through 16 digits
values D through S (space is 32 if no character)

Sum(D:S) * A * B * C

I only checked my first characters from the first month my account was created in 1998 since I don't know which month and year the rest were created.

ok i just got done creating 7 characters on the same shard one per hour and these are the numbers i got

i did my best to create them at exactly :15 everytime i only messed up the last one i believe
sometimes the numbers changed and sometimes they didnt
my little brain cant figure it out
