How to Troll the Ricardo Event

So I can't find anybody with a rune to the Vesper island, it can't be teleported onto, and somebody with a twisted sense of humour has come along and done this.

Does anybody have any tips for getting through this barricade of boats?

Edit: Whoa, I never realised that tillermen talked if you stayed on the boat with the anchor down for long enough. Mine just spouted, "Ar! Did I ever tell thee about the time I was in Serpent's Hold and I met a wench who wore so much plate mail she rusted solid and starved to death when it rained? Anyway, 'tis a dull story."
Some good has come of this debacle after all!

what shard is that? And actually, I believe in situations like that, GMs are allowed to remove the boats. I could be wrong, but it's maybe worth a page.

If you're on Legends, we have several runes to the spot =)
Give me a PM.

And yes, GMs will delete the boats that are blocking the shoreline. An enemy guild once lined the entire coast south of Brit with ships where my guild couldn't dock a boat...and yes, the GMS deleted quite a few of that guilds boats *chuckles* You may have to page twice, to get the right GM, but it can be done.

It's on Baja.

I decided to page a GM, just in case it was my lucky day. And if nothing else, I've gained insight into my tillerman's twisted mind.

I thought I might be able to get onto that little outcrop of land right at the tip of the island, but, alas, no. :(

I believe if you can get along side one of those boats with your own you may still be able to get on land even if there is another boat between you and the island.

...oh wow, it worked!

Thanks!

I never knew you could do that.

Most people just make boat bridges and move across that way.
Only trolls are ones that lock boats.

Other option is to stand By a Lt. for the satchels and ask for a gate. Usually works.

Docking a ship is easy:

Lower the anchor. (Say "drop anchor.")

Make sure the hold is empty and the ship's deck is clear.

Click the appropriate location on the ship's side rail to lower the gangplank and then walk off the ship. Pray that no one else walks on the ship while the plank is down.

Make sure you're not in war mode and then click on the tillerman . Click OK when you get the gump that asks if you want to dock the ship. Instant ship in your backpack!

Ha! Yes, the tillerman has many tales to tell. And you don't have to have the anchor down to hear them either. Just give him some time to get to know you and pretty soon you won't be able to get him to shut up. The stories are always just a sentence or two and he always ends with, "Anyway, 'tis a dull story." I copied down a few of them recently (see below) while training up my first fisher character, but only wrote down about nine of them before I gave up. Might have to pick that project up again some time and see just how many different tales he tells.

Ar! Did I ever tell thee about the time I was in Buccaneer's Den and I met a wench who threatened to marry me? Anyway, 'tis a dull story.

Ar! Did I ever tell thee about the time I was in Nujel'm and I met a fellow who got so drunk he claimed he'd tamed a dragon? Anyway, 'tis a dull story.

Ar! Did I evere tell thee about the time I was in Britain and I met a fellow who claimed he'd tamed a dragon? They laughed, until he brought it inside the tavern! Anyway, 'tis a dull story.

Ar! Did I ever tell thee about the time I was in Jhelom and I met a fellow who claimed he'd tamed a dragon? They laughed, until he brought it inside the tavern! Anyway, 'tis a dull story.

Ar! Did I ever tell thee about the time I was in Britain and I met a wench who claimed to know thee? I think she was lying, though. Anyway, 'tis a dull story.

Ar! Did I ever tell thee about the time I was in Britain and I met a fellow who said his dog was so smart it could talk? Anyway, 'tis a dull story.

Ar! Did I ever tell thee about the time I was in Magincia and I met a fellow who danced on the tavern table, but fell off and spitted himself on his sword? Anyway, 'tis a dull story.

Ar! Did I ever tell thee about the time I was in Minoc and I met a wench who was entranced by a cuddly ferret? Anyway, 'tis a dull story.

Ar! Did I ever tell thee about the time I was in Jhelom and I met a fellow who said he'd been swallowed by a whirlpool, and it had turned his hair white? Anyway, 'tis a dull story.

I'm kinda surprised no one has said turn the boat right and get on the island from the South.

I mentioned it up-thread; that jutting bit of land at the south is a little too small to dock a boat onto.

I'm so glad I found out about being able to make a boat bridge. I honestly never knew about it before now!

...duh. The problem is boats blocking, not docking, lol. Read just a tad bit more carefully :p

You don't need to be right up against it, as long as you toggle always run off, so you can walk on to the plank.

Are you sure? I spent several minutes trying to step off the plank.

Also! I paged the GMs and one of the boats was deleted within minutes. Thank you, GM Fiper, wherever you may be.

Errr....I understand precisely what the problem is. One of the solutions for the problem would obviously be for the people who left their boats like that to go back and dock the boats, right?

People who don't fish and perhaps haven't used a boat in a long time (perhaps since they left their last one off the coast of the Isle of Fire when they went to find the Underworld entrance?) may be too lazy or too proud or in too much of a hurry to ask for a hint on how to dock a boat.

Then again, the people who left their boats like that might just be scoundrels. Anymore who knows. I hope the majority of the boats that were left like that are just there because their owners couldn't figure out how to dock them.

...yes. It just happens to be a coincidence that those boats left there at an important spot for an event just happens to be by people who have no idea how to dock their boats and thus decided to leave them there all around the island... /sarcasm

Wishful thinking at its best, lol. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt as well now and then, but seriously...this is just too much right here...

Gah, you people will argue over anything!

Thanks for the help. Tina, the boats were almost certainly placed there on purpose (note how carefully they're placed so they block every single access point on the island without overlap) but I get what you're saying about people not knowing how to use boats; I know people who've played for four years and have never actually been to sea. So it's an understandable conclusion, but I'm pretty sure they were just being pests.

Viper, thanks for the advice on boat-bridging. I wish I'd known about it earlier!

If you want to troll the event, buy a ton of red books, name them the same as the Ricardo books and spread them all over the area.

major lollage ensues.

If you want to be really mean, copy the book exactly and place it right ontop of the real ones. Watch people complain that the quest doesn't work and they're not receiving their rewards.

I have no ale, but I did leave Ricardo some cookies earlier if you want to go in and steal them.

(I inadvertently blocked my own recall spot; serves me right for littering)

"Ar! Did I ever tell thee about the time I was in Serpent's Hold and I met a wench who wore so much plate mail she rusted solid and starved to death when it rained? Anyway, 'tis a dull story."
Awww poor girl! :sad3:

But I don't entirely believe the story. Hydrated iron(III) oxide, Fe2O3·nH2O, takes a considerably long time to progressively form even under heavy rain (and she had to be in a coma for weeks for a thick layer of rust to form).

Besides, surely there were other peeps around in Serpent's Hold that would lend a hand to help her? What kind of cruel world...

More NPCs should share stories such as these. It adds a feel of lore and richness to the realm. The classic Ultima series had lots of these (of course, since it was offline, such conversations were the only conversations available to engage the player so they had to have lots of such!), and UO should, too.
