Smoke Bombs

I find the way hiding, stealth and smoke bombs works to be way over powered in some ways and way underpowered in others. Ninjas pop out on unsuspecting players and start disarming, deathstriking and nerve striking etc. No problems there, ninjas are suposed to be sneaky. Problem is when that goes wrong for some reason with the ninja it is too easy to use a smoke bomb and insta stealth away from the trouble they started in animal form. It used to be there was a delay from hiding and using stealth. I think this delay should be re implemented even after using a smoke bomb. Ninjas should be able to sneak up on peeps but they shouldnt have an invuln macro(smoke bomb insta stealth). At the same time I would get rid of zero skill passive detect. A dice roll shouldnt be the reason a stealther gets revealed. Player skill should be the reason. Actual casting of area effects, purple and conflag pots etc. This might help a few thieves out in the process and we all know how badly that class has suffered. Thieves need to be sneaky and zero skill passive detect can ruin an entire plan in which time is spent formulating, and who knows? maybe a few people might actualy dust off thier detect hidden characters. I guess my point here is that sneaking up on people shouldnt be the most difficult thing in UO but at the same time running away and hiding and stealthing after committing a dubious deed should not be quite so easy.

A delay between hiding and stealthing would be a serious balance shift, regarding a combat situation.
As it stands, I'll go with "invulnerability macro". It's not a guaranteed escape, but it at least breaks targetting.
Forcing the ninja to remain in one place for a period of time leaves them vulnerable to any number of AoE effects, which could/would reveal them. If the delay's long enough to pop off an explosion pot, then smoke bombs are pretty much completely negated as an exit strategy.
If the delay's shorter, then there's fewer revealing measures that can be done, and the entire idea behind the delay moves in the direction of pointless.

Thats a pretty vague statement.
Ninjas are supposed to be experts at Guerrilla warfare..which is to hit the enemy in a surprise attack and disappear before they have a chance to retaliate..hamstringing their ability to disappear after a surprise attack makes it counter-productive to the whole "ninja" concept.

instead of yelling nerf folks need to rethink how to fight in parties and have characters adept in tracking and detect hidden etc. uo wants to use these skills but we always say nerf and then they have to make a change that no longer forces the balanced use of skills.

Detect hidden, the ninjas worst enemy. Not only can it reveal them, but if you have GM detect hidden, your passive reveal gets a huge bonus. Basically meaning no one can stealth around you successfully.
