This isn't really a 'what I miss' rather than a what p'ed me off...

...the silver vanqs I had turned into useless garbage! So did the Valorite suits!

Can you imagine the mass whining and complaining if all the artifacts and uber gear in the game were suddenly made useless by some "upgrade"??

I miss all of the things already listed.

I miss being able to actually make good money by mining, lumberjacking, blacksmithy. Since my return to the game i've felt the urge to make a new miner but the thought of "why.. so I can sell iron ingots at 5gp and save up to buy that 120 magery scroll for 25 million" stops me. I'd only need to sell 5 million ingots.

I miss 25 million being a unheard of sum. You could buy a shard with that amount of money now it's pocket change. People spend 25 million on one house deco item.

I miss the risk, there's no risk in UO now. Oh you died good thing all your gear is insured. Don't worry about looting your corpse there's nothing on it anyway. Need a res np there's wandering healers every other screen. And after you res just hit your re-equip macro and you're good to go. This is assuming you actually died as frankly outside of PvP 95% of the content in the game game is a non-threat.

I miss order/chaos warring in towns.

I miss knowing what template someone was by looking at them. They were either a warrior, a mage, or a tamer. They had a weapon and armor, sandals a kilt and a spellbook, or there a couple WW's following them. Sure there were slight template variations but not the necro vampire samurai gargoyle space monkey from mars **** there is nowadays. You can't tell anyone apart anyway they all just look like blobs of neon.

I miss GM meaning something.

I miss the old dungeons, sure they're still there and you can go back but it's not the same. Not even close.

Everyone seems to miss how much WBB was populated, but I kind of miss how every town that had a bank always seemed to folks lingering around for various reasons. At least that's how I saw it on Chessy.

I miss where houses were considered public unless the owner actually bothered to lock the door. Fighting in and around houses was much more interesting. Most houses had windows, so there was usually an angle where someone could get "touched" when they were house hiding.

I miss having guild wars because some griefer moved into the area, and that was the only way to influence him/her to move to another location.

Agreed - Silver vanqs, GM valorite plate.. all useless.

I remember when quest (not event!) items were so unique and rare that you could never rely on one to factor it into your armour. You just grabbed your GM val plate and that was fine.

Though before THAT, invulnerability was what youd be after. I remember coloured platemail only being for show - it was only used because it looked nicer.

Bringing me onto the point of aesthetics. You could look good AND do good. You could pvp in basically no armour, and look all the cooler for it. You would have Valorite plate to make yourself look cool in combat, not because it was any better.

Oh and about armour - I miss the forge in Brit :( all those smiths repairing stuff!

Yep. My most played red back in the day did the majority of his work in nothing but a kilt, sandals, and bandana.

Try to get away with that nowadays.

I miss being able to steal reliably on the production shards, not just Siege.

For reasons underlined above, Felucca got a lot quieter and items got a lot safer, not to mention the fact that when elves came into the game (admittedly a lot later than the first two problems) stealth checks seemed to go through the roof and you'd find yourself revealed next to a victim almost constantly. I miss the times when playing your thief was akin to dancing around the garden inside Willy Wonka's chocolate factory and eating as much as you liked. You could steal from one person, put the item somewhere safe and then find another victim straight away, you were spoiled for choice. I've always been a morally grey person so I never did sample the murderer lifestyle, but I'd imagine it's the only other profession that can rival the rush you'd get when you pulled off a perfect steal. Whether you'd waited hours to get your goods or just nabbed a massive treasure through chance, the feeling of elation was absolutely unbeatable.

It wasn't just that there were a lot of people to steal from either, it was also the "they'll never get me attitude" that seemed to be everywhere (either that or just plain ignorance). No matter how often people saw grey thieves running off with a fresh steal, or how well they knew a place to be a hotspot for theft, they would STILL take chances. The community of scoundrels was not a small one either, you could always find other thieves to team up with to provide distraction while you nabbed a particularly difficult item, or simply to have fun with. It was by far the best feeling in the world to own a character who lived entirely off the backs of other players, a little anti-social perhaps, but that depends on your perspective and how you chose to treat your victims. Either way it was a great source of adventure, excitement and enjoyment while it lasted.

Naturally it wasn't an incredibly popular element of the game. As time wore on the backlash got bigger and bigger until the profession was diluted beyond belief and Siege became the only place to find anything worth stealing on a regular basis. Having said that, and with the exception of murderers, I personally think this skill was one of the best gold sinks we had (although not for the thieves themselves, teehee).

Hide, Sneak, Snoop, Target, Wait, Nab, Run, Hide, Rejoice.

Glory days.

Oh the other thing I really miss is dismemberment, curse you ERSB, I want my livers !

"Teen Rating", honestly.

Blah, I remember when WBB was too laggy with the amount of people... Moonglow bank was great to hang out at. It had a lot less people than WBB back then, but was still more populated than all towns combined today...

22. Fighting on almost equal grounds... or at least if not there is a risk/reward issue.... if they wanna carry a vanquishing weapon at least i can LOOT IT when/if i kill them.. unlike today where they bring a 100 mill sword and wow u get 600 gold when u kill them.
Now that point alone speaks volumes to me.

People complain about lack of balance and "items" in PvP...

Well...

If there were no item insurance, it would be less likely that people would use "uber" gear in PvP, because of the risk of losing it. Only those that are highly skilled players would likely take the chance.

...certainly feels like a lot of people here yearn for the simplicity of the game as was :)

Therefore anything "uber" would more likely be used in PvM, where at least there's a chance to get it back.

Plus... GM smiths would be popular again! :thumbup1:

Talking while hidden and the words still appearing as if out of nowhere.

The bone wall in deciet.

Bounty board in west brit. (anyone on GL remember Jff at the top for all that time? Go SiN!! hehe)

I miss running to my 7x7 house in bfe Yew, managing to out move the orcs that spawned about 1/4 screen from my front door, only to be meet by my nice red neighbor Twisted Pretzel to have him laugh and kill me on my stairs. Not that all of Baja had such nice neighbors but to be shown every day just how much you are missed and loved that they felt the need to make the journey and wait for me. Only thing that waits for me at my door now is an up tight harpy. :)

There is an easy fix for that...

...don't read threads that are called "What do you miss from...".

Not an intelligence test anyone should fail.

Oceania having a population of more than negative 100.

If you do not believe please go ahead and look and not just at luna (although half of them will be afk bank sitter)... go to the dungeons, go to fel etc...

Remember this is with the new patch on so account for a renewed TEMPORARY influx of interest of people. There may actually be 50 WHOLE people on at one time now.

Note: i have not played in a while but with the number of posts of VERY old vet players quitting on ocieana forum... i doubt the population could have grown much since i left.

  • Enticement. Before Discordance :D
  • Item ID (Did I mention this earlier?)
  • NPC Guilds giving you a discount in shops. Apparently
  • You could make money off having a "supplies" vendor, selling bandages, fishsteaks and recalls!

I miss hanging out at the Brit smithy with the rest of the leet smiths of the shard. I miss seeing people wear full invul plate, and using force/power/vanq weps. I miss the WBB lag monster. I miss seeing the calming original colors, not the neon ones that will give you seizures. I miss clicking on an item to see the properties. I miss killing that one pro dexxer and blowing my load in excitement when I open his corpse bag and find a full invul set and two vanq weps. It was honestly like Christmas morning. I miss seeing crafters being as rich, if not more rich than tamers. I miss having pvp battles of epic proportions at the moongates. I miss killing earth elementals at Shame dungeon. Lol, I could go on, but if I don't think I'd ever stop. There's just too much I miss about the old days. To the people that don't think there enough people that would want a classic shard, let me just say that the majority of the "free shards" out there are based PRE AOS. And that's for one reason, people simply like the earlier eras better.
