I'm never "leaving UO" again

This is a reversion of the original post. Pointing out the most important points of emhasiss.

I'm going to highlight the most important part of my message.

I've been pretty heavily involved in World of Warcraft. I've played enough of wow to know that the culture is twisted into something which is undesirable.

Simply put, a certain portain (which seems to get larger by the day) of people just don't care about others in that game. And, I'm constantly shocked at the lack of maturity of its players. People simply are rude and disrespectful of their fellow players. Players are lacking in basic communication skills. Using words would be far better than one symbol communications. Using profanity rather than using words to express a persons feelings is also something which is common.

At a certain point, I just had to step back and ask myself, "Do I really have to put up with this kind of treatment?" There's a growing trend in that game which has become more of a game "of me." People are in the game for themselves not to actually help and communicate the people who are they are with.

You get a player who has certain gear and it seems like it gives them the right to be outright rude to other players. It's like they are handed a ticket or a pass to behave badly. You players with a little bit of gear and it gives them a right to have a "bad ass" attitude."

After becoming weary of the behavior I've seen in a game like wow, Being able to solo some of the content in this UO game is calming. Not being forced to have to interact with the "bad ass" players of wow is something I find as a desirable trait of UO. I've never met so many rude people in UO as I have in wow.

The power of the player by gear has not increased as dramatically in UO as in a game such as world of warcraft. It's amazing how much in WoW, poeple are scorned for not having the right gear or doing the right amount of dps.

UO has fewer divisions between players based on their gear or their ability to pump out dps. UO is more of a game of having fun and winning encounters than personal glory or so-called achievements. Best of all, I don't have to log in EVERY SINGLE DAY just to make sure I'm keeping up with the rest of the players in a never-ending quest for more powerful gear.

I did have top gear and top dps. At a certain point the culture of the game became unpalatable.

I posted my basic message on the wow forums if that makes anyone else feel better.

I don't know why people keep saying, "WoW looks good but it lacks depth".

Sure it lacks depth, but WoW looks horrible. Really, really awful looking game. And, no, it's not a matter of personal taste because people who like it have none. There, I said it.

 Thanks for the laugh...

Very thoughtful post OP... I like the sandbox aspect too. One isn't limited by experience points, or limited to being a swordsman or healer or mage. You can be an idocer (and by extension, merchant)... a home designer, decorator, or run a successful auction house.

It's a good thing that, out of all the different developers this game has had, none have tried (or should I say managed? :p) to change that part of this game. :)

I always thought WoW looked 'cutesy' like a Mario game or some kind of cartoon. Just my opinion.

<nods> Yup. I've beta'd and played more than a few levelers and except for a couple instances ended up totally wanting more depth to things. The Empiriana puzzles and DAoCs Theurgist were my exceptions.

My biggest "I love UO" comparison is one you alluded to ... the skill setup. WOW, WarHammer, DAoC and others all have specific skill trees for casting and weaponry. UO essentially has none of it. If I want my Paladin to be a smith, I make the change. No big deal.

To an extent, UO does have the gearups and DPS gaming that you describe, but in the main I think it's the way the players themselves handle it that makes UO what it is. Instead of mocking, for the most part you get guidance ... there are guilds (and solo players) who will see that you get help if you need it.

Sandbox is frustrating, but it sure is fun!

I will excuse your post merely on the basis you have no freaking idea that mammals can have eggs (looks at Fink's sig), so something is already amiss in your logic.

4) Thank god for no DPS mod in this game. A game is a game. DPS stats just make a game less of a game. But, that's just my personal opinion.
Hm, so does WoW generally have a static DPS?
In UO it fluctuates all over the place based on stamina.

Interesting how your comments make it seems more like just an extension of battle.net, a single player game played with other people.

It seems to me that the way players play their game (WoW or UO or any other) is an effect of the game's design. All of the level grind type of games (WoW, EQ, etc.) are numbers, scores, and repetition...and total control through those.
The players seem to be like automatrons, falling right in line. So you end up with that expectation of what exactly you are supposed to do with your toon, and anything else is deemed subhuman, even a social no-no. And I can't stand that.

Play UO.
Turn yourself loose.
Let freedom ring!

.. Which is an entirely accurate observation, considering the direction Blizzard is taking with integrating every game into the new Battle.NET.. Communication, social tools, rankings, achievements... WoW is no exception.

All things in moderation, or you may find yourself burned out, which is what this sounds like to me.

WoW is NOT UO, but it's a perfectly fine game nevertheless.

I think you proved that by how involved you say you were with WoW.

I think subscription numbers for WoW also prove it.

Here's hoping you don't overdo playing UO as well and find yourself over on the WoW forums bashing UO in a few months.

WoW = warm and sexy graphics (night elf female blinking and moving her lips)

UO = cold and hard graphics

No point comparing the two, they are NOT the same thing, but they can both co-exist peacefully in the gaming world.

I like both personally. 11 million subs say plenty of others also like WoW's graphics.

Or do the 11 million subs say that there's 11 million people out there that can't cope without being 'organised', even if it is by a game? Who can't cope with the sort of freedom that UO offers in comparison to WOW?

Just me thinks on it :)

Regardless of WoW subscription numbers or which game is better. Both have good points. In my 8 months in WoW I did have fun and I liked playing a Mage over there. However it's not UO and thats fundementally my problem with it. You are just a mage/druid/paladin on WoW, you can be a resource gatherer alongside that and an alchemist but everything is limited to single choices.

UO allows a level of freedom so you can be very different things. A smith can still be a swordsman abeit a not very powerful one. A Necro can be a melee fighter or have magery as added casting. I can own a house or I can use that same house as a rares museum, library, shop or any number of quirky things.

I can't do all that in WoW and WoW IMHO doesnt have the community that made UO great. But I fully appreciate that WoW is a good game in its own right and sometimes I consider reactivating and playing occasionally.

That's funny, I always thought WoW looked terrific, in a, as someone else already pointed out, cartoony kind of way. You get that nice glow on it and it just looks, well, alive.

And then you start getting into it, and you realize there is no originality, you can't be your own little snowflake, you are going to end up with a character that is exactly the same as every other character, down to the last item. There are no dedicated crafters, all the quests are really just iterations of two or three basic quest models. In the end WoW is, in my opinion, just mind numbingly boring with absolutely no room for creativity and originality.

Just the housing all by itself puts UO in a completely different league than WoW. 11 million subs be damned. It won't be the first time an awful lot of people have supported something that was bland and tasteless as yesterday's pablum. I mean look how many people eat at MacDonald's every day. The food is terrible for your health and the only thing that gives it any flavour whatsoever is the salt...

Having said that I still get the occasional Mac Attack... And I did go back to WoW once on a free 15 day account renewal and tried it out for another hour or two...

-you neglected to type, "in my opinion"

WoW's garbage, simple as that. Face it, if you're going to sit there and do the same bs over and over, just to get to the next level...(mind you, these are real life hours you're burning up).....you're wasting your life.

I play UO, yes, BUT, I don't sit for endless hours.

What was Steve McQueen guilty of in "Papillon", in his dream??

A wasted life.

Hmmm, it needs to be called World of Waste. And yes, I tried the thing,....luckily through a friend who bought it ( I feel for him too)

If you've never seen Papillon, rent it, it's damn good.

Like others,, if 2012 doesn't screw us up, I'll still be on UO.

If you've never seen Papillon (and even if you have) read it. Much as I love Steve McQueen, the book was infinitely better in so many, many ways!

As long as the person is having fun who are you to say they are wasting their life? I love when people try to pass their opinion off as fact.

I've played 30 minutes of UO this week. And, I'm never going back to wow. by the way, if you read the post, you'd notice it has more to do with just being burned out. I revised the post to clear up any confusion. Don't worry, I've noticed in any post people tend to grapple onto certain key words and phrases and tend to lose the overall meaning of the post. Only having a real conversation about it would clear up confusion due to this form of communication.

Nice post.

You can certainly find such people in UO as well, but you can also usually avoid them or filter them.

On this front, I really like Siege as well. The shard population is small enough that mostly everybody knows everybody. This means that actions have consequences and people have long memories. This weeds out a lot of the really obnoxious behavior.

Though, my years on Atlantic were also good, and there are very many fun and kind people there, it was possible for someone to scam, rename the char, and nobody would know the difference. That almost doesn't happen on siege.

I'm sorry but sitting on your ass in front of a computer screen playing a video game is WASTING YOUR LIFE, no matter how short or long a time you are sitting there, no matter what game you choose to play.

Au contraire mon frere. Video games like UO are useful in maintaining mental acuity and hand eye coordination, especially among the elderly, as well as in helping maintain and develop keyboard and language skills. They are also invaluable in providing shut ins with social contact, and are helpful generally in socialization and communication.

As with just about anything there are can also be destructive behaviours associated with video games, but this is not an appropriate context for that particular discussion.

As someone that has played all the major MMO's except WoW (too cartoony - same issue with FFO), this isn't some sort of new trend, nor is it mutually exclusive to WoW. There's plenty of trash, abuse, etc right here in UO, which barely sports 1/100th the subs that WoW has.

It was less substantial a problem in EQ, mainly because SoE actually has a dedicated GM force that enforces little things like the ToS, AUP, etc. If a report was filed, it HAD to be followed up on. It was one of the few things John Smedley did that didn't make me want to do evil things to him...

The problem is, and always has been, the keyboard warrior mentality, and the absolute freedom that basic anonymity gives. Unless those that own the system police their own system, there are no repercussions. And no, player justice doesn't mean crap in this circumstance.

We all have things we like and dislike about UO, and some of us have things we liked and disliked about other MMO's. In the end, what matters is what makes you happy enough to keep you spending your $$ in one location. Nobody here, or on any forum, can judge you for your decisions - they don't know you, don't pay your bills, warm the other side of your bed, etc etc.

You've made your post, and expressed your feelings. You don't have to justify.

As for me, I'll more than likely try the next thing that comes along that claims to have the combination of things I enjoy - and if it works, great. And if not, I'll come back to UO... again.
