WHEN? Sunday the 21st of March at 8pm UK Time (9pm Central European Time)
WHERE? Trinsic West Gate, Trammel

A Messenger

Casually Mizara Khan strawled over to the gate of Trinsic. From under her robe she produced a note and dropped it on the ground.

Mizara smiled and skipped away into the forest...
Story from the EM Website.

I took a walk down to Trinsic and found the note:

A Threat
by Mizara Khan
-------------------------
To the people of Trinsic I demand you surrender to me the son of the Duke of Trinsic to be brought up in the true ways of the Necromancer or I shall raise your city to the ground.

I will be here on Sunday 21st of March at 8pm sharp to collect my charge.

Do not try and trick me as I have a ready made Army of Darkness at my disposal.

If you do this and promise to accept me as your new Duchess I shall spare the rest of your people from un necessary suffering and you can all join me in the blissful union of never having to worry about the trivia of life and death again.

Well I was wondering if we need to dress for a battle or a wedding
There's a difference?
Although, I'll admit, I might not have attended the most typical weddings in my time...

That was a fun event. I got a little annoyed with the "WE WANT ITEMZ!" crowd as usual, but for me the event was made even more fun by my decision to take Crazy Miggie, grandmaster beggar.

But WE WANT ITEMS !!! :)

Many people attend events for items thats just how it is, many hunt champs, doom, peerless for items.

I attend events only for items, some of them are good others are bad. Some are fun and some are just boring. Its how it works. Everyone knows we dont get items everytime but still asks for them :)

Same as if people do peerless some still hope/wishes for drop.

So people are allowed to be disruptive, abusive and annoying at events just because they want items? Who knew!

Agreed, Wanting items is fine, But saying an event was rubbish because there were no items is just rude, (not saying you said it ET, But I've heard it plenty of times from others before).

well people use their time to attend the events and some people expect rewards for their time and effort.

As always I was hoping for items myself, the event was good even tho I think it was "to easy" and confusing. But I guess with all the players there made it very easy to kill the mobs and get on with it. I did expect something harder or atleast something that was a threat to Trinsic. I also admit I do not really follow the storyline because its not really worth it for me.

But if people don't like the events they can stop attending them, if people don't like what other people say at the events ignore them.
I myself have said several bad things about some of the events in past, and I don't mind giving credit where its due either.

I know that this has nothing to do with Europa but if you take a look at other shards events and how many event items there are given out atm. People might see that and think same thing will happen on Europa.
Now I'm not saying there hasnt been enough event items given out, I think theres been given out more this season than any past season in such a short time. And that goes for all shards. But I guess its to give the players something new to collect after many of the true rare items graphic has been implanted in new items.

I think people just need to accept its how its going to be, if some people are not happy they will cry out and if others are happy they let the EMs and other know aswell.

They cannot please all players, but maybe they will find a way to please a lot of them. I think its great that we had these "special" events like Valentines Day and St. Paticks day. Because its different to the storyline there is rewards and keeps the other crowd happy. Its great way to balance it all a bit.

I myself wasnt a big fan of the Gate race basicly because my connection aint as good, so I wouldnt be able to keep up with any of the other players. But I can understand that many love it. So I just don't bother with it. I still attend and hope for rewards like last time :) But then again people cried out that there was new players who didnt attend they where able to get sashes. Even tho they dont attend they still want the items, and maybe they will attend other events with fighting to get loot. So more people might attend the events. Like last night I think there was a great show up of people there.

Hmmm.... Well, we saw a few Coils on the pictures, they can have nice items?
But in all seriousness, people just attending for the items are really missing out IOHO. Much more fun to crawl into the storyline.

Firstly, before I make my argument, I will openly confess that I indeed sold 2 of my ales from the St Patricks event, as my own aim is to buy a particular item I've always wanted, and selling on high value goods is the only way to over come 12 years of inflation to do this. I am also mining Valorite and selling high resist Greater Dragons every day I can to hit my target... but I have not, and will not sell either my personal sash from the Gate Race, nor the St. Patricks shirt I was given in an amazing display of generosity. So I am aware that the issue of "personal value" for items is complex...

... However what I think is not up for debate is the deforming influence of Rare Hunting on the events themselves; by which I mean, there is a constant pressure for items to be spawned as drops, either on obvious targets or at set locations, which mean that most of the event takes only 2 forms... everyone crowding onto the event EMs/NPCs to try and ninja loot, or everyone running en-masse from point A to B to try and get the loot. Which I think in turn ruins the enjoyment of those there for the role play or story line progression, because most of the time you can't even see the NPC's text amongst all the spam and bodies piled on top of him. Last night, as well as trying to maintain SRC resurrection stations, I resorted to bouncing on into Event chat what plot text I could catch, for all those who would otherwise miss it... did I ensure I'd miss any item drops? I suppose so, but my personal value system accepts that. Other's may not. But had I not done that, would half of those involved have any idea of the plot at all? Probably not, and that's why I think these events need tweaking.

By all means continue to drop loot; but not at central locations say... How about reward sashes for defending different entrances to Trinsic, so the players naturally split up? Or "Coil Killer Merits" for defeating specific, but reasonably scattered spawns? What about scavenger hunts for items... not rare items, because people would just hoard them rather than let the story progress... but junk items, which would act as a Clean Up campaign too; send people off to do their own thing, find all their spare plants or what not and bring them back as ingredients for a spell or whatnot. That corpse burning last night? Why not send people to get Firehorns to create the required cremation power... (something people are unlikely to have hoarded until now)? And those who contribute get a "Keeper of The Flame" or something reward.

I could go on, but you get the point. Widen the quest out, so both play styles can be more involved...

I certainly agree with Adol, some method of rewarding those who don't fight is still seriously lacking for most events - healers get a poor deal, but so do thieves, usually bards, in fact when it's an item drop related to damage inflicted there are only a handful of templates even need try for the items, which is a pity when the strength of UO is it supports almost infinite templates and playstyles.

On the general argument of items and events, though, I'm pretty relaxed about items dropping, not dropping, being sold or traded (barring those relating to events about genuine shard 'history', which should stay on their home shard as far as I'm concerned). The problems for me come with the attitudes of players to what they do in game, and their willingness to insult or offend everyone else because they are not happy..... and usually the problems come from those with a very distorted view of UOFree's comment,

well people use their time to attend the events and some people expect rewards for their time and effort.
The problem I see is the immature response several people have to such 'expectation' not being met - especially when it's defined as being a reward for their 'time and effort'... except, it's a bloody GAME, the reward is to have fun doing whatever it is you are doing. (And as for 'time and effort'? Effort? Seriously? Compared to what, exactly, is playing UO an 'effort'?)

Surely, what you choose to do in UO is your choice? Or have I misunderstood, and do we need to seek out and beat up those evil people forcing these sadly disappointed players to wear themselves out straining to get hold of a rare item drop at an EM event? It must be terrible being made to go do things you don't enjoy in a game when there are other things you could be doing, in or out of the game, that you would enjoy..... but as far as I can tell, the only thing stopping these people doing something they 'enjoy' is their own greed for possibly getting a new shiny thing, and fear of somehow missing out either something - frequently a something they only want so they can sell it for huge sums of UO gold.

Now if you enjoy trading, or getting, the rare items - that's fine, if you enjoy it then go for it! Some events should cater for that, whilst others should cater for other playstyles, or philosphies. Everyone obeying the rules is entitled to have fun playing.

However, far too often the result of those shiny new toys not being there on demand is, from a very vocal minority, stunningly childish. A string of semi-coherent abuse of the event, those designing it, everyone else for enjoying it and probably everyone in the universe for not letting the complainers have their toy NOW.... and to hell with insulting or offending anyone else, because nobody else matters compared to their disappointment.

I'd be really tempted to hand out a suitable 'rare' for those folks - maybe a timed dummy, blessed for them, non-tradeable, that stays in their backpack and means they can't speak in-game until it wears out....

I'd like to add, for the record, that Miggie came out of that event with a very nice pair of earrings (the virtue quest reward ones) that some kind soul handed over while he was begging before the battle, so the token beggar did at least get a reward ;)

It's pretty much always been like that, and likely will always remain that way for two reasons:
1.) Max damagers tend not to like not being rewarded for their max damage. If reward is distributed randomly, irrespective of damage caused, it tends to lead to complaints from these people - perhaps rightly so.
2.) Any time such things are proposed, there's a variably vocal group of people that oppose it on the grounds that it's "not UO" or such things.

Besides, any time I've tried to consider a mechanic to take such things into account, it gets almost exponentially complex as more people get involved, with a whole lot of room for abuse.
The situation sucks massively, but really the only immediate "solution" is the "make an ABC archer" one :<
