Anyone else remember the official announcement below from almost a year ago (i.e., April 1, 2009)?

Stygian Abyss Limited Time Offer
The Dev Team.
01 Apr 2009 16:07:06 EST

You’ve journeyed through the darkness, vanquishing untold legions of corrupted spawn and vile undead intent on your utter destruction. You’ve seen wonders vast and terrible, walked through blazing rivers of fire, and even faced the most ancient of threats to two worlds. Your journey through the Stygian Abyss nears its completion, and indeed, you consider what untold wonders and wealth await your stalwart and unyielding hands.

It would not be unusual for you to believe that at its heart, the blackened core of the Stygian Abyss, you should perhaps encounter your greatest foe. It would not, in any way, be unusual to believe you might stumble across some sort of Chamber of Virtue. No, you would not be thought misled to even expect the Codex itself! All of these things would be expected by anyone with a shred of reason left following their ordeals…

But you would be Wrong!
The Ultima Online team is proud to present the latest innovation in in-dungeon housing technology: Stygian Heights! The premiere luxury tower condominium solution for a new generation of dungeon dwelling heroes!

Located directly in the heart of the Stygian Abyss, overlooking the vast chasm rending reality itself, awaits Britannia’s latest, trendiest skyscraper (or shall we say dungeon-ceiling-scraper!)

Containing over 400 units and rising more than 2000 tiles high (thanks to our new, 256 tile X-Y offset technology (patent pending)) Stygian Heights affords its owners the best of accommodations from both old world and new!

Rival the Queen of Gargoyles herself with your opulent decorations! Put the stodgy castles and towers of yester-year behind you! Interact with hundreds of like minded Humans, Elves, and Gargoyles from across the globe!

Details:

3 total bedrooms
2 full bathrooms (NEW! ***Innovative UO Technology***)
Style: Abyssian
Hardwood floors, marble tiled entrance
Central heating/cooling
Fireplace, or optional “Heat Source” for that Gargoyle look
HOA

Now that we've actually had a chance to explore the Abyss and other aspects of the SA expansion and perhaps paced out the potential housing spots, how much of the above announcement do you believe now was written tongue-in-cheek and which parts of it do you think might actually become reality?

If you actually have the good fortune to win one of these plots for your own use, what would you do with it? Keep it or sell it? Do you think the plots should even be transferable?

Would you leave your Abyssal home private or make it public? If you made it public, would you install an Ankh of Sacrifice to help out fellow players with being able to rez in the Abyss? Would you put up vendors to sell items?

What do you think the rules should be regarding getting to the house...walk in like the rest of the masses, use house teleportation tiles linked to another house if you're lucky enough to be able to acquire such items, or recall/SJ/gate using runes marked in the house?

Should Abyss house owners be allowed to install endless amounts of parrots or use huge amounts of gaza deeds, regardless of any lag problems such items might present to other players?

Should Abyss house owners have total freedom regarding house customization or should they be limited to a pre-fabricated design as were the Malas castle contest winners?

Any guesses on how the developers are going to make it a fair contest for all players to try to acquire one of these units? If the contest is directed at accounts versus actually doing something in the game, what do you think the devs should do about picking a cut-off date for determining who is included and publicizing such date? If you have to do something in the game, should you be allowed to participate on multiple shards and if yes, what happens if you win on multiple shards? Should any types of accounts be excluded from consideration for the housing units (e.g., haven't purchased the expansion)?

blah blah blah....

More than 150 units have already been sold! Reserve your unit now! This special introductory offer won’t last long! Starting from 5,236,885,565.00 GP Blah blah blah
And to answer your question on how they'd determine who gets them.... I guess it would be whoever could pay the 5,236,885,565.00 GP (5b 236m 885k 565gp).... That is, if it wasn't an April Fool's Joke.

On a more serious note, I thought they had in fact said something about opening houses in the Abyss.

I'm not sure I'd get one or not. That'd mean giving up my 15x15 outside of Brit (cause I'm not about to let go of my house in malas, lol). Idk... I'd probably make it public and put an ankh up (if that account is old enough...got if from a friend and haven't bothered to check the age on it) and a crystal porter. (if I decided to try to get one)

What's this about pre-fab designs like Malas owners? I think I'd stopped playing just before Malas, and hadn't ever heard anything about it.

As far as endless amounts of parrots and stuff though... as long as it's away from any spawn, it shouldn't be a big deal. Spawn+tons of parrots+tons of other stuff= lag. So, as long as it's away from spawn.

On one hand, it would make sense if you could recall into the housing area, on the other, that would mean everyone else would be marking runes for there too, regardless of whether or not they own a house in the area. Would this be a big deal? I guess it depends on how many a-holes you have on your shard who would get jealous that they didn't get a house in the Abyss, and plan on blocking recall spots for a few weeks.

I think they should limit it to people who have the expansion+normal house placing age limits (2weeks no newbs or whatever it is). If you don't have the expansion, you can't get into the Abyss, period.

Sure, you can try to win on multiple shards. I can't imagine these houses would be exempt from the normal housing rules though, so if you place a house in the abyss on one shard, the first one you placed would go idoc the second you placed the other. Hopefully whoever would be running the contest would have something in place like.... you people won 1st-10th place, you have 2 weeks to place a house. And then after that, free for all. If there's not contest involved.... make it free for all.

They need to log on and do as new or returning players do. Set up a character and act and play as inexperienced players do and reward the player that goes out their way to help them for a few hours. Gear up and answer few the million questions new players have.

Be at a populated hunt the community is doing. Just before the boss dies they kill themself and see who rezs them instead of looting and snatching up gold and reward them.

Just should be some random shard jumping person with full knowledge of the game rewarding those players that add to the richness of the UO community. Really how many players go out their way to go get someone a free blue beetle or go to the Titan area in despise to rez someone on chat. Or even the player that picks up all the buttmunch gold sites books in Luna and moongates.

There just has to be a better way then a writing contest. Hell a once per account event quest thats is long drawn and demanding. Out of the blue quest added only accounts that been active in the last month or three can do to enter. A token given like the holiday stuff for accounts active at the launch of the quest used to start the quest. Number of chances based of number years the accounts been active.

Theese abbys homes should be none transferable so later events can rereward them out. Not limiting on locks like no mater the size a large tower count for locks. Three standard designs to fit the different size areas.

I remember that well.... because I've been wanting one ever since.

I figured if I ever one it.... I'd have a great plot ... I can think of two spots I'd VERY much like to have.

I'd keep it public.... I wonder though.... could you recall to it??? Would you be able to put in a house teleporter??? That would be neat.

I think If I had one it would have a forge and things in it... It would have a couple of ankhs of sacrifice.... and it would have vendors(Yes I'd actually get a vendor!) selling potions, bandages, and other helpful items. And I might even have a tavern down there... for those weary of fighting and wanting a good drink.

Might be fun...

But I'm not sure how that would work really. I'm kinda wondering if after they give housing away if they will lift the anti-recall/mark thing.... or what. I think that is something they will need to consider. If they open up housing would those people getting the housing be unable to get "home" without walking all the way through the Abyss???? or would they have some "advantage" over everyone else? And if they did would they be keeping it private or making it public?

And what happens if they quit and the house falls???? Would there be a new contest for the plot???? or would it sit empty for years to come? Or would the house just never fall???

These are all things I think the DEV's need to seriously consider before opening up a contest.... and perhaps they are doing just that. I certainly hope so.... because I could see some serious abuses going on there if the wrong sort of people got ahold of those plots.

I hope they are thinking everything through very carefully. The UO community is in a serious decline these days and how the developers handle this situation could be the final nail in the game's coffin if they screw it up.

Hi ...
I'll let you know that Mark ('Shade") and the team have been working on the contest diligently.
It is quest related done over a number of days to allow everyone who cares to participate an equal opportunity for one of the plots open in the Abyss.

In short: "If you don't want one don't do it." But please don't spoil it for others who do.

There are more details coming in the next week or so. And yes we wanted to make certain that no one can get the upper hand on getting a plot, and we had to make sure that the quest is not amazingly exploitable.

Both the Japan team and the team here in VA have looked at it ... and the quest itself is pretty cool. The concept has the chance of being used for future contests and events in UO.

We'll keep you updated.

I just hope I have a friend get one because after all these years lorax really needs to use the bathroom. I just don't have over 5 billion gold to get that chance at the hot bath or to "go".

They should go through with it regardless and then let you place a mini house deed in the Abyss as the reward.

You don't know it doesn't have bathrooms in it.

That was an April Fools joke. However there was a plan to have a limited number of housing spots in the Stygian Abyss. You can tell easily what those locations are.

However, I suspect the producer being let go one month after the expansion release sort of messed up those plans.
