FROM EM DUDLEY

I'd like to firstly apologize for any inconvenience anyone experienced last night during the high seas adventure.

In the previous weeks in discussing this event I'd informed you this was something that's never been done in UO before, and it'd be new and exciting....I hope it at lived up to that expectation and you all enjoyed yourselves despite the losses some experienced.

There's an old saying in Scuba Diving that says you should never bring anything on a boat you aren't willing to lose, including your life. Having personally fell victim to this circumstance a couple times (bye bye $500 digital camera ) luckily UO allows us some recourse that real life does not.

A backup of Chesapeake has been placed on TC1. If you experienced loss of a pet you may e-mail Mesanna at [email protected], she will verify existence of the pet on TC1 and then replace it on Chessy. If you experienced a revert of the name of the Harpoon, you may email me at [email protected] and I will verify its authenticity and replace it.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience and hope to see you at future EM events.

Stay Toon'd!

I did not lose a pet, although after the event it would seem I was in the minority. One of the Greater Dragons that was lost belonged to my real life brother. I think I tamed it for him a long time ago. Anyways, it made me very sad to see so many on Chessy behaving so poorly. There was one bright spot though. Mesanna handled the situation in a manor well beyond my expectations. She answered questions honestly and in a strait forward manor. She admitted mistakes and committed to fixing them. That is all any of us can ask for.

I have been called names and ignored at House of Commons meetings because I ask questions about decisions that are made. I don't want to cause trouble, but I think that we deserve honest answers, transparency. We got that Saturday night and I more or less want to say Thank You. Hopefully this is the start of a new trend!

I felt as you did...but instead of transparency...so far all I have discovered is censorship and one sided accusation by staff. I didnt want to cause trouble, but it seems any remark made in opposition to these matters will quickly get you called liar amongst other things...even by staff.

To clarify to all those who attended, I was disgusted by the behavior of Chessy players...and even more disgusted at the gullibility of official staff. I sought to give other players knowledge and clarity to the events that transpired...but even that deeply hampered by locked threads, deleted posts, and moderator action. (notice I am not discussing said action) Sorry if I portrayed official EA staff in a negative light...but when people do things that go against the grain of official game policy...I speak my mind regardless of consequence.

My apologies to all for bringing to light the poopstorm, but someone had to do it.

I agree. It was unfortunate that this bug occurred. I happened to lose a greater dragon at the beginning of the event, and was happy to see Dudley and Messana trying to fix the issue after the event ended. What was upsetting was the constant complaining of several individuals during the event, and the many, many untruthful individuals who tried to take advantage of Mesanna/Dudley. I refuse to believe that 15-20 dread warhorses were lost, but that is how many people were claiming to have lost one. I could be wrong, but I believe only a small handful of players were affected.

Despite the bug, I thought it was a great event. The only sour note was players complaining about their pets and event items while Dudley was trying to move the event along. My thanks to Dudley for his time and planning a fun event, and also for being so willing to fix an unanticipated bug.

I have called for transparency in EA's dealings many times and a few times in Stratic's cases. The only reason to keep things in the shadows is to hide truths you don't want told. In other words, to protect an image. To preserve a false front so the masses can be duped.

Transparency is great, but not against an angry, deceitful mob, aka humans. Can you imagine if the President of the United States told every single "terror threat" to the citizens? The "common" people would go crazy with fear, "hope" would be lost, an the world would certainly not be a better place for those few men.

Chesapeake, no different from any other shard or collection of people yet involved in a game world that can be moderated much easier, is not to blame, but the situation becomes a precedent in UO. From now on, if there is ever a huge mistake on the part of EA Mythic, their EMs or GMs, we need to expect emulation of the affected server as a test shard, if viable and if an isolated incident, in an attempt to retrieve any lost items.

And as a side note, the idea to emulate Chesapeake came from Tigger, GM of [SHE], so if EA Mythic gets this right, please be sure to thank Tig for giving his idea to Mesanna :).

Most of all, remember what happened.

You do know this is a sandbox right? rolleyes: Comparing a mistake in game to RL terror threat is laughable at best. In a game setting where people pay to play...transparency is very important and expected.

IRL?

i thought that the idea of this event was very well done in that it added content on the high seas which is something lacking in this game.

in hindsight maybe they should have tested the mechanics a bit before rolling it out but i don't know if it was possible.

a few of my takes of the event as i was there on a dexxer.

1) the player base of chessy reacted in bad forum. people complaining about losing blaze cu's and dread mares was low class. I know the guy who got the black horse and he admitted to me that he didn't lose it. i know another guy who was whining about losing a dread and i know he was there on his dexxer as i was xhealing him.

2) Measanna, was slow to see the forest thru the trees on this and acted in a manner true to the valor virtue in trying to get people back there stuff. I commend her for this as well as her professionalism as many of the playerbase were reacting like unmannered children.

3) The idea of loading Chessy on TC was brilliant as it stopped the potential scamming. I don't know if SHE guild made the suggestion as it appeared to me this came about after Measanna's conversation with the engineer. In any event again EA people in the end were on point

4) Several of these discussion threads were locked on stratics. I don't understand this disregard for the first amendment as the concerned player base was looking to have a cognizant discussion on this highly unusual situation.

5) On a side note why does a large portion of the player base insist on bringing greater's to these events? it's very difficult to target things with large player populations to begin with. I mean don't people have confidence in playing any other type of template?

i dunno. i hope some do some serious soulsearching moving forward.

Hence my second paragraph, which you omitted.

The point of the message is leaders cannot be transparent; common people react poorly to the truth. UHall is a prime example of how miscued facts can lead to riot among the masses. How many people are concerned, now, about the "Dragon Nerf," for example, which some described incorrectly as a reduction of "damage," whereas only firebreath changed?

People forget as easily as they're angered.

You know what, I strongly suggest you PM Gareth and Petra on this matter and my involvement. The end.

The first ammendment (not being American I had to look it up)
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
I'm not 'congress', I didn't make any 'law'. I just locked a thread on a forum before the flames got too high.

FYI...in America we might argue that what occurred may be seen as a violation of first amendment rights. However, some people do not understand that this is a forum...not the US of A. :)

I talked to Gareth earlier today and heard exactly what I expected. I don't think I need to bother Petra.

Well, it would be harder to connect with people if we instead talked about the Chinese government ;P. You have to assume, on a USA East shard like Ches, most people are either from USA or Canada, and there are a lot less Canadians.

Personally, I'm a fan of oligarchies, but that's another story.

An oligarchy (Greek Ὀλιγαρχία, Oligarkhía) (oligocracy) is a form of government in which power effectively rests with a small elite segment of society distinguished by royalty, wealth, family ties, military might, or religious hegemony. The word oligarchy is from the Greek words for "few/one" (ὀλίγος olígos) and "rule" (ἀρχή arkhē). Such states are often controlled by politically powerful families whose children are heavily conditioned and mentored to be heirs of the power of the oligarchy.

Oligarchies have been tyrannical throughout history, being completely reliant on public servitude to exist.
Why am I not surprised.
