House placing question...

I read through the palcing/resizing FAQ, great stuff, but I still have a question for all you experts.

I have a spot in mind and unfortunately on TC1 there is a structure in that spot. I have checked on a few other shards and have found what I think is the largest size 9X10. On the shard I want to place on I am told it will not fit. I read in the FAQ that this can happen between shards, but how common is it really? There is nothing in the way, mobs, no houses within a few screens, nothing so it has to be due to terrain, but it looks identical (to my eyes anyway). I am not new to house placing, but it is not something I do often. Are there any tips or trick that you all can share when comes to fitting into tight spots to maximize the house size?

Thanks

when I have trouble placing I start with a smaller size house... in this case would have to be a 7x7, I think..... and plunk that down where you think the southwest corner should be, then increase the size gradually and you can see where the trouble is

BUT!!! the problem with this is, as has been noted in numerous threads, that sometimes a house will place with no confirmation gump, so be mindful of that

Thanks DevilsOwn - I was somewhat concerned with the no confirmation gump so I was working from the other direction, but you are right I should start small and work my way up. How long after placing do I need to wait to try and "resize"? Does the standard week wait apply?

Thanks

If the confirmation gump appears, you'll be able to see that the house is placeable there without actually placing, and can then 'cancel' and move up a size to test the next size up. The only time you'd have to wait is if the house actually places without confirmation, and at that point I think the timer would apply.

One trick I've seen is to place single gold coins or other small objects around the North and West edges of a known plot (start at the top corner, as usual - test place as far to the upper left as you can, so you have two known edges to work with). You can then easily target the back corner every time to test if the plot can be extended. I managed a 17x17 in a spot that another person could only fit a 14x14 in that way. It takes trial and error, but it might be worth it.

Place using the EC, zooming all the way out helps a bunch.

2d client set the gameplay window in the upper left corner of the screen. You can use the full screen hot key of Alt-Enter to do this for you by hitting it twice. This way your cursor will align properly with the outlined housing image.

If placing in Felucca you can set your treecanopies to on and desolation off in the uo.cfg file to spot house placing abnormalities. Things like grasses should stand out like this.

If you want a hand scoping the land out shoot me a PM.
