Why do some of the animals that I tame "refuse to follow me"? And what can I do about that?

If your pets aren't obeying your commands reliably, the most likely explanation is that you need a bit more skill in taming/lore to control them better. Usually you can fix that with some training or a skill increasing item.

If you go to this page and enter your taming/lore skill, then check the control chance box, you'll be able to see how much control you have of your pets just now. 99% is the max, but if your control falls quite a bit below that (say 70%-80%) then you're likely to see a lot of failed commands from your pets. This will in turn lower their loyalty/happiness, which can lead to them going wild, so lore regularly and if they fall below "wonderfully happy" it's wise to give them some food and bring it back up.

It may also be that you have removed a piece of equipment that increased your taming/lore skill and you need to re-equip it.

Hope that helps, but if you have any further questions don't be shy. We were all newbies at one time - some of us still are lol :)

It's possible too that you have enough skill to control the pet, but his loyalty is decreasing as Wenchkin explained for reasons like :

You never feed your pet at all => after a while he'll become unhappy no matter what.
You gave him an order he couldn't follow, for example asked it to follow you when he was stuck somewhere, or to kill a monster he couldn't see and so command failed. => a failed command will lower the loyalty and increase the probability that the next one will be refused. What will increase the unhapiness of the pet.

Again as Wenchkin said, feed you pet until he is wonderfully happy again and all should be well.

There is also what i would call a bug.

If you are inside a house for example and use the drop down pet command menu[when you single click your pet to command it] click the follow and target yourself. It will refuse to follow you. This has no bearing on skill level, happens to 120tamers controlling a goat for example.

It can be got round by using the verbal command "all follow me"

In general it is best to use verball commands over the drop down menu [for ease above all]

Hope that helps some.

This was the way they first tried to "fix" pets teleporting into houses. Then they destroyed every mob's ability to teleport, but they never reversed this change. Frankly both changes suck. There had to have been a better way to prevent pets and mobs from teleporting into houses without completely destroying the ability of every mob to teleport.

It is possible that you tamed something that was previously tamed by someone else and then released. When your character tames that animal, it will be in a "confused" state and unless you feed it something immediately before giving it a command, there is a very good possibility that it will revolt when you try to order it around and will go back to a wild state. That's probably not a big deal if you're just taming low level creatures for gains, but it could cause some frustration on your part if you are taming something more difficult that you intend to keep. If you think someone else previously tamed the animal and you want to make sure it doesn't release itself, feed it something before giving the first command. Or at least lore it to see whether it is wonderfully happy before you command it.

It seems that I've been neglecting what probably should have been obvious ( but since I'm new to taming and have been riding "etherals" for years), I completely forgot that they need to be fed right away...
I've now corrected this, and can go on till I have another "newbie" question for you guys...

Thanks much for all the thoughtful responses... :)

Pets make two types of sounds:

A "yes" or "ok" sound

A "no" or "I'm going to kill you" (when wild) sound

Listen to the noises your pet makes. Too many no's and you need to feed your pet and make sure you have enough control over them through taming and lore.

For reasons lost to me now, I turned sounds off years ago and haven't turned them back on... ( I can hear the OMG's and the "you did WHAT" already ). I think I'll turn them back on and see what else I've been missing...

I don't think I've played with sound in a year. I should try it sometime.

i have music off but the sound effects are quite helpful for a tamer.

i can tame creatures like Bake Kitsune without being attacked once just by timing my invis to their "I'm gonna attack you" bark.

PM me offline for specifics

I would never play without sound in any video game. I turn off the music very quickly, but you can get so much information from the sounds that you hear in game, information that can improve your game play, and save you from many a dirt nap...

Did you tame them while they were Peaced? if so they will still have the peace timer up and will follow no commands. Peace timer will go away, but you will have no control over the peaced pet till it wares off.
I learned that while taming drakes and dragons for the zoo, peace them, tame them, cast a gate to the zoo (all folow me) and no lizard would follow me. Bugged me for ages.
Hope this helps.
