Releasing aggressive pets?

Let's say your stable is full and you've just tamed something like a bake kitsune that has great stats. You want to replace another of your bakes with the new tame and can't find anyone to transfer the old bake to. When you release the old bake, will it immediately go aggressive on you and try to kick your butt for releasing it? If so, what do experienced tamers do?

Here are the possibilities my newbie tamer mind comes up with:
1) Release in the wild at max distance and run.
2) Release in a guard zone and yell "guards!"
3) Release near a monk in Tokuno so he keeps the bake occupied.

Thanks veteran tamers for all your help!

Usually if it's a pet I plan to upgrade I use it to work the spawn for something better and then release it in the spawn area. If I've kept and hunted with a pet though, I don't like killing them so I usually release them in the middle of a forest in Fel near my house ;) I'm soft, but that's what I do if I can't find a new owner for the beastie.

I do exactly the same than Wenchkin, except not in fell :)

Except when it's a pet that can be donated to the zoo.
I try to give it to a player, if I can't it's the zoo and if I can't I release somewhere safe for the pet.

He won't become aggressive towards you immediately, you are quite safe.
It's when you release, leave the place and come back later that it can attack you sometimes.

but it never happened to me, they stay pacific usually.

Wenchy and jeza, thanks for the answers. It's nice to know I can release the pet in the wild and not have to worry about being attacked right away.

Have a great weekend!

Released pets that weren't aggressive towards your character at the time they were released should stay green/blue for a moment or two, so if you do have to release one and don't plan to get it destroyed ASAP, you could safely stand beside one that is naturally aggressive for perhaps a moment or two. I tame, release, and then kill dragons all the time in Destard and they never snap at my tamers once they're released and while they're still green or blue unless the tamer hits them with something first.

That being said, if I have a naturally aggressive pet that I no longer want (not one I just tamed for gains) and can't find it a new owner, I generally go to a stable in a deserted city, release the pet at the stable and call guards. Or I go to a stable outside of guard zone (e.g., Hanse's Hostel), make sure no one else is around, release the pet and then kill it with another pet.

It's considered griefing to release an aggressive pet near other player's characters, so I've never considered just releasing one anywhere near player housing. There's so much anti-tamer sentiment in the game sometimes, I'm not sure it's worth the risk of doing something like that, hoping someone will come along and tame the pet (especially since a previously tamed pet is harder to tame) and thus save it from being killed. I think you're more likely to end up having someone report you for being a griefer. You might be able to get away with releasing a cu sidhe at a stable, but I'm not sure you could even release a unicorn or ki-rin and walk away because they might still have a tendency to try to attack negative karma characters.

Oh well I never release pets neat players, it's always in the woods far from all civilization.
And from any mob spawn area if possible

Of course it's easier for me as my shard isn't very populated.
It's probably more difficult in a crowded one :)

If your character is in a guild, you can safely release a pet in town as long as it isn't aggressive towards you when you release it. It's health bar will stay green for a moment or two, during which time you can call the guards on the pet to have them destroy it. Your own character will normally not be attacked by the guards when you do this. However, I suspect that if a guildmate attacked the pet during this period (no one else should be able to do so while the pet's bar is still green, unless you're in Fel), your character might very well end up being guard-smacked.

I can't say with any certainty how safe it is to release naturally aggressive pets within a guard zone if your tamer character is not in a guild. I suspect its bar will stay blue for a moment or two and you would have time to call the guards to destroy the pet.

I like to release aggressive pets just outside Luna's guard zone but first I rename them "a cat" or "a dog".
