What tempt you to become a UO tamer?

It was love in first sight.................with a nightmare.

I started out with paladin 6 years ago, until Angelica, later on to be known as a skilled tamer, riding on her pretty true black horse take us newbies to hunt. As most have experienced, newbies + dungeon = Ooo00ooo........after a few deaths, her shimmering black horse still stand!!

I was fasinated by the power of the creature. Then I started to train my tame/lore/vet skills from 0 (I was too new to know the skills could be bought and too shy to ask around...). It took me 3 years to 120 all my 3 skills.

I have been in and out of UO, and have tried WOW's hunter, but to be frank, there is no equivalent excitement as being a UO tamer. In UO, when I hunt alone, I never feel alone with my nightmare around.

What tempt you to become a UO tamer? Mind to share?

I found a mis-priced advanced character token.

So for a very low price and a few jewels which I already had, I had myself a fully functional tamer with bonded pets in a week. If I knew how much fun I would have had taming, I probably would have finished one off years before.

For me the really obvious... I love animals. I have them around me in RL so when I started in UO my first char tamed whatever was at hand. I do remember someone taking pity on me at WBB (this was before Tram) and buying a freshly tamed hind from me. I always had wolves tagging along at first, then bears. I was unimaginative with the bears, they were always called Ted :D

My first char ended up a PvP warrior for years, but in the meantime I made my first fully fledged tamer and I've loved every minute since.

Well, to be honest, I think the first thing that attracted me to the tamer was the power of dragons and nightmares. This was a long time ago, pre-UOR if I remember correctly. I was a wimp back then and bought my dragons and mares from tamers selling them at the bank, and after years of playing on dialup, on servers on the other side of the planet, it was only then that I started to experience some real success in the game. But I really got hooked hard core after I came back after being away for several years, and I believe I also used an advanced character token, and started farming for my own pets.

I'm a geek with an imagination, so while I loved the romance of the idea of the pets, especially dragons, eventually it was the numbers that grabbed me and held me. That and doing things that not many were doing, such as being a successful "pure" pvp tamer. I'm also a bit of a rebel, so the fact that tamers, especially in pvp, were the targets of such scorn and ridicule, also appealed to me.

When Dread Mares were in their prime. I also loved doing doom runs with a greater dragon at my side, a lot of fun!

Long time ago I died maybe a dozen times to a simple demon. Tamer came along with 4 White Wyrms and that demon was instant toast. I really wanted revenge on those demons!

I made a tamer because I am trying to master all of the skills UO has to offer.
Now that I have a functional tamer, I am wondering why I did not make this my first template.

I'm just a crazy tamer...got 3 nightmares and 4 dread in the stable...I've tried to train other chars with different skills, but they never last long...Have no idea why...

What's the second best skill to train? Any suggestion? I really need to try other new things...lol

Tamers could do battle with the best and also help everyone else. I saw my brother helping in a champ spawn and in one minute he also rezzed 3 guys and cast fields everywhere and kept his pets health up. It was artwork. His pets had cool names. And he had cool friends that always wanted him to go on hunts with him. I guess it was jealousy. I wanted to be like that.

on a sidenote.. I wish i had a dreadmare or dread warhorse or whatever those things are cool

I changed my very first UO char to a tamer 9-10 years ago. Though, not quite sure why I didnt just make a new char lol. The reason for the change came from 2 sources. My "neighbor" took me hunting and she always rode around on a mare and I thought it was really cool. She usually fought with magery though. Next came a new friend I made - she took me hunting with her 4 white wyrms. To me, they were beautiful and I was hooked, I just had to have some of my own.

There's nothing else like taming in UO, or in any other game I've ever played. Building a crafting crew with all the crafting skills, including a resident gargoyle artificer can be fun. But it isn't taming...

Yeah, the functionality of any tamer template is exceptional.

Absolutely! somehow no other mmo seems to get taming or forms of pet control right :(

It generally is only a matter of "functionality" for less experienced players, at least that is the way it is with me. When you are an inexperienced player it can be easy to be impressed by what you see as the tamer's power. But really tamers are only powerful relative to other templates in the early stages of those templates' development.

What grabbed me later, when I became more experienced, was the challenge. A tamer is a challenging template to play well, and relative to other fully developed templates, most tamer templates tend to be a less effective choice for most purposes.

Agreed~~ UO provided tamer lots of "freedom" in the game...allow tamer to tame lots of creatures...

When DF and WOW first introduced, they seems so promising...but quite disappointing to find both of them fail to create a in-depth tamer profession...(DF doesn't even have taming...)

Initially, it was because I wanted a dog :D

Then I heard about sheep...little round fluffy balls that were so cute and that you can shear every day for wool (back then, they don't unspawn and will regrow a coat of wool at server up). Walked all the way from Brit to Yew to tame me a dozen and walked them back to Brit!

It was great for those times that your horses likes to go wild without feeding once every 2 hours.

But it was a mere utility skill to me then.

Until lag was so bad that I realized using a pet was the only way I could play. Pets react and fight at server speed, so no lag problems for them even if I get hit be a lag spike.

Seriously started to train my tamer then. While everyone else kept liches at home to train resists, I kept a bunch of pets. First thing I did everyday on login was to re-tame the bunch of sheeps/grizzlies/horses in had kept trapped in my house. Would shear the sheep at the same time. They would go wild naturally and I can tame them again on server up to gain skill.

This was before difficulty based gains. Also re-taming before server up would not give skill gain. And releasing them would break it so that they won't give skill gains anymore.

It isn't just that you can tame lots of different creatures, it's that each one is unique. And then the way they behave, it's almost as if they have personalities. And then working with them is not simple, it's not just a matter of "all kill" as some seem to think. It's almost an art form, especially in pvp. All in all it is the most engaging game play experience I have come across in any MMO.

When i 1st started to play Uo, i was a warrior, training melee skill's like mad.
I was like a 50 skill Archer, Sword, Healing, anat etc.
Then i joined a Guild and became a GM Warrior over night :)

There i was strutting arround killing peps, well not realy, just killing reds when i had a chance.

Then a few days later a Guild mate asked for help to tame a Dragon. So we went to Destard, (was different then, way less spawn and murders out to kill ya).
Took awhile to clear out the pvp players as with all the (energy, fire field's going on etc.) it was easy to go gray and die :)

Well with just 2 of us still alive (early days, no great mages or healers yet, longway to run {in Gray to a shrine}) :)

So we waited and waited, while ICQ was hopping and we were very nervous.
Will the pvp's peps come back? will a drag spawn? will my dial up cont still hold up? heart racing stuff. :)

An hour later, and i mean an hour later a Dragon appeared.
Oh MY it was magnificent, the power of the wild beast!

Alas we also we also had a long gray walk back home.

So after we recovered, i spoke with the tamer and she agreed to take me under Her wing.

So i lost most of my GM melee skills to be come a Tamer, i held on to to GM swords and tactics till the bitter end, but i droped them later for more animal lore and vet.

Hail Sosarians & Tamers,

I arrived in Sosaria through magical means then beyond my ken. Years passed as I met folks with seemingly infinite mixtures of skills and abilities. I GMastered Magery and other abilities that enabled me to Command magical travel gates. I cast the spell to open just such a gate, its twin opened on the home world of my kin. I was suddenly summoned to the aid of a Guildmate. It was much later that I learned someone had come through to Sosaria from my home world. I was greatly pleased to learn a young cousin, an Elf, had joined me in Sosaria.

I introduced him to many of my friends. He had a natural affinity with animals having tamed a horse upon his arrival on Sosaria. Many of my friends encouraged him to walk the paths of Ranger, Tamer, and Veterinarian. I also supported these choices but added my view that Magery would also serve him well.

He sought the counsel of the most skilled Tamers in the land. He considered their advice and began his own walk among this lands many and diverse animals. He labored long among bulls and cows; wolves, bears, and many other animals. It seemed that each time our paths crossed he was accompanied by new types of animals. When he came to visit with a Dragon in tow, and later a White Wyrm, even I was greatly impressed. Finally, I saw him riding the great Hiryu and Cu. And when he asked a tame albeit feisty great Dragon to guard my main entryway into my Castle, well, I Saluted him with Honor and declared my admiration for his achievements.

He joined what many consider to be the finest Animal Guild in our land until the day he was ready to found his own Guild for the betterment of the Tamers of Tomorrow.

His path was difficult and his journey long. Yet never once did I hear him complain. Quite the opposite in fact, he told me endless tales of his wonder and joy as he walked our lands honing and improving his skills.

It is my hope this tale shall encourage others to join him on the same path and similar journey. Our journey is mainly upon Baja.

An SoS
