I recently found a very cheap nvidia geforce 5500 video card and installed it thinking it would help my machine handle the enhanced client. It made it worse, and caused the 2d client to crash several times. Is this card totally incompatable with UO or is there some setting I missed? Im running an emachine w3507 with 2 gig of ram and xp service pack 3 and 3.2 gig processor

First of all, make sure you have the correct drivers for both the card and for Direct X installed.

Secondly keep testing with other programs and see if you have the same issues.

Finally, if you've done 1 and 2 and still have problems, then you may have a bad card and might want to return/exchange it if possible.

For the EC, I would personally recommend nothing lower than a GeForce late 6000 series or higher with 256 Meg RAM or better.

Def everything Dermott said. I wouldn`t waste time with anything less than 512 these days. They are so cheap....

I have a fanless heatsink type Nvidia 512mb in my back up machine, think it cost $80

My main machine has a 9800 GT,granted I needed to upgrade my pwer supply to run the card but the card was still under $100.

256mb cards in todays world of gaming are serioulsy lacking IMO especially if your already running a low ram system.

Hit up Nvidia.com and upgrade your card drivers than google Direct X and DL DX.10. Like Dermott said if it still is unplayable I`d be going for a refund on that card.

What was your older card?
5x series was weaker then the 4x series. Many people skipped buying that failure of a model till 6x and above. I definetely kept my 4800 untill they came with something better.

What is the 5500, is it a pci or pci-e, also the power supply in that machine is probably really weak. As for cheap in picking up that card I am not sure how much you paid but you can get a 9500 series with 1gb ram really cheap also. But with only 2gb of on board ram you will probably want to go with a 512 video card at the most in pci-e. According to your specs you can not raise the ram for the pc any higher too.

I am willing to bet that the on board video is probably pretty close to the video card you just installed.

I recall that the GF 5000 series cards were notoriously bad. As someone else stated the GF 4s were better.

If you want to give an older card a go for the Enhanced Client, start with a GF6600 minimum.

yes i have a 6600gt one of the newer models with 512mb. i run the ec client it has no graphics issues asside from the tile redraw issue with the backpack :(

this will work if you have an older agp video..
http://cgi.ebay.com/nVIDIA-GeForce-...emQQptZPCC_Video_TV_Cards?hash=item45ef0f5e31

its cheap..

if you want the BEST agp video card you can possible buy then these are the ones your looking for..

http://cgi.ebay.com/New-HIS-Radeon-...emQQptZPCC_Video_TV_Cards?hash=item3a56b5c98d
or this one
http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Sapphire-Ra...emQQptZPCC_Video_TV_Cards?hash=item4a9d60faad
they are more expensive but its twice the card. plus they are dx10.. think they are the only dx10 agp cards available.

now, if the rest of your computer is outdated.. ie. 2gb ram, 1.5ghz or better cpu.. then i wouldnt bother getting new video and upgrade the whole thing.

ddr3 ram, dual channel cpu and a pci-e video is really cheap now days.

The computer he is using has a pci-e X16 slot, what I am wondering is if the 5500 he got was a pci, which is probably a good guess. They were more common then a pci-e. He can use any number of cards that are newer, if he can fit them in the case he has and the power supply can handle it. Which he should upgrade to make it handle it anyways.

ok if you have pci-e then go with this card.

I used to use the 5500 on my old PC. Was an AGP card.

No problems with UO. However, it did have problems with Oblivion or any games that uses shader 2.0.

As I remmebered i think the problem was with the number of pipes though I can't quite be sure of it it's being some time. The 4x series performed better than any of the 5x series except maybe for the very low 4x series I think was 4200. Though The 5x series started with the pci express slots I believe so some people were forced to upgrade it if they upgraded there motherboards.

Either way these days anybody can get a nice 8x series and up for cheap. Though I recommend never to get any of the lower specs of each gpu series.
4800 is better than any of the 5x series, The 6 series I think most is discontinued except for the revamp of the 6200, 7x series I believe they have 7300le,7600,7900 with gs and only 7900 gt.
But all in all 8800gts sell for a average of 90 dollars so upgrades should be done from here and up. Special note 8800gts is better than any 9600 and below. While 9800gt performes a little better and 9800gtx,9800gtx+ would be the next true upgrade from there worth the money.
Of course True power comes from the GTS and GTX 200 series.
