Banner approvals

I was wondering if anyone here on these boards that use graphics that belong to others such as EA graphics... how many have accually gotten approval to use the graphics in their banners??

Also, as of late.. I have seen a few very offensive banners on here lately. I am wondering why does Stratics not screen any banners before they are allowed to post them or use them?

The reason why I ask this is because I am a domain owner several times over. I get upset if someone stole my graphics off of my sites and used them without permission. One time someone accually mirrored one of my domains and I was able to get that site taken down. The person that mirrored my site did write a letter and ask to "borrow" some of my graphics. I gave him permisison for a limited amount of time. After that time he needs to write and ask again if he can mirror my site and use my graphics.

Am I a weird one or what? I decided to use EA graphics in my banner after I stopped useing my 9/11 banner. I first sent my banner to EA for approval.. then to Stratics in 2001. Yes. My banner was approved by EA and Stratics before I started useing it in my posts. Yeah.. I know.

Can always report any offensive signatures.

Also, wouldn't this mean everyone would have to ask EA for permission for the use of any graphic from UO?
... as in every single screenshot.

Your banner is offensive to me. I see a woman who is either receiving or has received sexual favor. Please remove it or I will have to report you.

There is a little button at the bottom left side of a post that allows you to report the post. If it offends you and violates the rules then you should push the little button.

I would think signatures would be covered under terms of Fair Use, unless someone's making money from them or claiming authorship for whatever reason.

It depends on several factors appropriateness, intent & usage. Also like Fink said, Fair Use is part of that. Outside of Fair Use, are allowances made by publishers releasing fansite kits and the terms of those.

If you feel someone is abusing someone else's content, the best thing is to notify the proper parties.

No.. I haven't seen any "abuse" of borrowed graphics here yet.. however I have seen a couple of very offensive banners.. and yes.. I did use the "report" button on them.

I was just curious is all. I was just in the "wonder" mood today.

No. No stones. I was just wondering if it was necessary for me to have gotten approval being that I used EA graphics. It came second nature to me to do that is all. Most domains have the privacy and ownership rights noted.

With that being said.. this is a domain that EA supports. So of course the UO graphics are going to be used here.

Now if someone makes a site of their own useing EA graphics.. then maybe that would be another story I guess.

when you consider the graphics are most likely copyrighted (including the UO symbol) you did it right.

As long as you dont use copyrighted stuff to harm a companys reputation or make cash from it they dont care...99% of the time...

I think it does qualify as fair use, to use it in a signature, as long as it's not for profit, and not defaming.

Something I wonder about often, is if people know the source, or artist, responsible for the art they use.
An idle curiosity, really.
