Even on Baja which is one of the smaller shards I can be at my house at 2 AM and someone will show up to browse my vendors. I can always find people, and we have a nice little RPing community. We may not have tons of people, but the people we have are nice.

I have played this game online since Sept 1997 and loved most
every second of it.
People have been crying since around 1999 or 2000 that it would
never make it, that the sky was falling and the end was near.
Those of us who loved the game and stuck in here thru the good
and bad knew it wasn’t going anywhere.

You can always find someone to play with unless you’re
A loner by choice
Anti Social (or)
An *******

Im happy to see more coming back and seeing more new people
around. Its good for everyone

I think we started around the same time and I totally agree with you. The cool thing about this game is that you can play with tons of people or all by yourself. So if I feel like being a loner, I can... or if I feel like hanging with 20 people, I can. It's great and there are always tons of things to do no matter what your play style is.

Look, I agree that UO is the best game. But lets look at the reality of the game. It's lost masses of players. Each time people said UO was going to die, there was a reason for their claim, and massive losses have been a fact.

First there was rampant PKing, masses left , UO had to do something drastic.

So they came out with Trammel. More people complained. Although many players came back and UO enjoyed a revival, after some time the reality of what Trammel did in separating players and removing social vitality caused more masses to leave.

Then they decided to add item grinding to the game, and many players claimed UOs death. And UO did in fact lose more masses of players. While some are deliriously happy that they can grind away in UO just like in any other game, more left.

There's been other things too, but those are the biggies in my mind.

The fact that UO is still here is a testament to it's strength as a "worldly" game that has freedom of choice and action and interaction with the environment. Although a big chunk of that freedom, in both cases, has been taken away, UO still is by far the game for such.

Had UO actually advanced those basic desires of many gamers, those freedoms and interactions, and advanced the game along with it, UO would be the number two game right now behind WoW. Everywhere you go related to gaming and MMOs, people still talk about UO. They still compare everything to UO. UO is second behind only WoW in this, and everytime a WoW comparison is made, you can count on a UO comparison to soon follow.

That's UO's strength, in it's foundation and core ideal. That's why it's still here.

That's it in a nutshell. There's a quality of freedom in UO that is hard to find anywhere else, regardless of play style.

I have noticed a lot more people on as of late...I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I use EC and it tells the server load for each shard and the other night when i logged in I saw only 3 of the western chards were on low. The rest were on medium and 2 were on high. Personally I think that is a huge achievement for a game that is 12 years old...The graphics may be dated, some mechanics/skills may be useless but the game offers A LOT more than most on the market now...

Also I have noticed that just about EVERY MMO i play i compare it to UO. As far as i'm concerned there is no better game than UO, which is why no matter how many times I leave, I keep coming back...

I like drinking out of half full glasses rather than half empty.

I was saving my veteran rewards for the last three years for the 12 year rewards and I was letting my son (8 yrs) play yesterday on the TC1 just for the holidays with me there. He logged onto Europa and took a polar bear and swamp dragon and fire ele statue, where I don't really play.

He was so excited to get those items and ran to tell me. My jaw dropped, but I looked at my account age and I'll get another reward in merely 5 months.

LoL gotta love the kids! My son placed a house on another shard one time and idoc'd my huge house full of crap on LS. He also took one of my rewards on Atlantic. The good thing about that was, he got Exodus' Lair snowglobe on that shard so I just transferred it all to LS. I told him next time he did anything like that on my acct, I would duct tape him to a tree and pour honey on him for the bears to come lick off lol (he knew I was kidding so don't freak out)

We let our grandson build houses on test center when he comes to visit, but he doesn't have the password. We put that in for him, I suggest you change your password and do the same, Lorax. :)

Grandson is only 7 though, so he doesn't play alone, I'm always logged in to test center with him on my pc while he uses my husband's.

hmm europa seems pretty empty tho...

I've recently moved from Great Lakes (where I've spent the last 10 years) to Europa, because my "rural" internet isn't so good.

Europa is much busier than I thought it would be, but then I'm also part of a very good and active guild, [Saor], the largest on the server.

I've not had chance to participate in as many EM events as I would like so far, but the players always have something going on, which is a good reason to check the global chat channel.

Yesterday I was out hunting IDOC's, when I happened across a large keep. I let the rest of the guild know. We began camping the IDOC, uncertain when exactly it would fall. Soon some [2.0] reds pitched up and began to raid. More of our guild mates were recalled in, [*NF*] and [VIP] joined the fray and whilst waiting for the keep to fall, the reds kept raiding and the "blues" kept fighting.

The keep stayed up... for a long time. We were there for many hours, but a great many players took part in the "activities" and doubtless had fun. Incidentally, when the keep fell, it was completely empty! :hahaha:

So, we don't have to be beholden completely to EM events to see lot's of players in one area at any given time. Use the chat channel, put a shout out to players for a hunt or a champion spawn, or to ask who's doing what and where.

My rewards story with kids, I think, tops them all.
I didn't use my rewards for the first 6 years. I was saving them for something really worth it, I mean, for my own wants as well as to sell and finally have wealth in this game.

Well, my kids often had friends and neighbors over for sleep overs. One of these was a neighbor kid that loved to play UO, and I let him have his own shard to develop characters on. I went over all this about the rewards with him many times. But one night, I guess it was too much for him. I never allowed him to play after the rest of us went to bed, but I got up to go to the bathroom, and I noticed the light in that room was on, and there he was, playing. I asked him if he did anything he shouldn't, exactly with my rewards in mind, but he said he didn't. I made him get off of the comp and go to bed, which he did. The next day I found out my rewards were all gone and paged a GM who told me what shard and which character claimed them. It was him. He traded all my rewards for a bunch of junk. An Orc Helm, the old, gold ones, was the best thing he got for them.

Needless to say, I was a tad bit upset. I told his mother what he did, explained that these things were worth quite a bit if one were to sell them on eBay. But what the heck, it's only a game, right? Right?

By the way, that kid never played on my account again, and I even changed the password because I heard that another neighbor kid got UO.

This is very true words.
Before there were EMs, there were no EM events. The players made their own entertainment, which they are still more than capable of doing now.

I forget the exact words of it, but I read someone say something a little like this:
"The players are the architects of their own experiences"

The only real threat to UO is a bout of irrationality on part of EA.

Now, EA is an irrational company, so it's not like that's some distant, unrealistic threat.

But it's also something that can't be predicted or planned for.

Rationally speaking, there's no good reason to think the game is in any way headed for cancellation anytime soon.

I don't want to turn the knife in the wound (a lot atleast), but why not just use UOA:s autocancel veterans rewards so kids won't get em rolleyes:

Except if you didn't have UOA ofc.

I gave my son a linux box for a gift and installed wine and was running uo2d on his linux box. I couldn't get the uoassist to work. I can see in the debugger report what uoassist is trying to do, but it would take more than 30 minutes to resolve. He loves linux because of all the 200+ free games and educational applications.

My kids love this game more than anyone. Many years ago because my kids became old enough to read really well, probably from playing uo, I set up a uox server for them. It was pretty fun because I made a couple dungeons myself and let them be gm's to make the dungeons how they wanted. It was fun for them because they took turns trying to make a dungeon too tough where the other brothers couldn't beat it. Those boys are 18 now and would play all the time if we let them. They had fun wearing the Lord British or Blackthorne costumes and each had their own room in Brtitish's Castle.

My youngest we mostly have to tell him he can't play at all because he loves the game so much it is a beg and plea to play every day. I'm on vacation and decided to let him. I left to make dinner having typed in the password and he was supposed to log into the tc1, but he said it was not shown available. That is when his excitement was sky high with logging into Europa and claimed the gifts.

However, all this said, my point was that I look at Ultima and of course I would have coded it much different, but they are coding it half-way full. I look to the future rewards because I know they will be there when the time comes around every year.

I love this game too, but my kids got me into some first person shooter games on consoles and that is kind of fun too. I can log into a game like that and be immediately at the same level as everyone else gear-wise and play for an hour.

UO takes me weeks if not years to configure my gear. But I play and play and get mad sometimes, but after I calm down I add back in tactics to my archer to deal with the developers change. Good thing we have skill stones otherwise my impression on changes would be drastically different.
