I haven't used the CC in years, so I'm not sure if it's the same. However, in the EC client, our chat window floats and is flexible, so I put it out into some dark space so that I can see the text scroll by.
As of now, we've had two tabs at the top, "System" and "Journal".
The "System" tab shows the messages you get in white, e.g. skill gains, healing, etc...basically just observations.
The "Journal" tab shows system messages + spoken text that would otherwise be overhead. Usually this is the tab I select, because I almost always want to read conversations, even if the system messages from actions around me get annoying.

Unfortunately, this is *now* the place where chat system messages are dumped. And there's no way to filter them out, which got me thinking.
Instead of tabs at the top of our chat windows, could we have check boxes that would selectively filter what sorts of messages we want displayed?
That way, if I only check "Journal", I just get the conversations on screen (as opposed to constantly leaving and rejoining a chat room).
Or, if I only check "Chat", I can follow along with my friends without seeing the conversation around me (and prevent me from running away from folks on screen)?
Or, I check them both, so I can follow both, but ignore system messages?
Or, if I'm feeling like I need some quiet time, I can uncheck both "Journal" and "Chat" and only watch system messages while I craft or something.
The whole chat system would stay the same, and recording of all events by the client would remain the same. This would just act like a filter and allow me to 'mask' global chat for a moment while I talk with someone on screen, or vice versa.
