Nystul had looted the ring and returned it to me tonight. Thanks very much.

You know, we struck up a conversation about looted gear, and I wanted to share a sentiment that an old friend of mine told me about this game. His name was Vood and was one hell of a guy to play with and have on our team. I miss him and hope he comes back to game soon.

Once, during a huge Yew gate battle, someone dropped their suit. Someone in D|R got it and completely refused to return it. The guy said basically "I hate that guy, and he wouldn't return gear if HE looted it"....

Vood's response to this was: In Ultima Online, we have to LOVE our enemy. If you are paying a monthly fee to play this game, it is obviously something you enjoy (despite the general UHALL negativity). But people quit all the time over simpler things than losing a whole PVP SUIT. So, it is extremely important to help our fellow players. If someone drops gear, return it.

So, despite my huge difference in playstyle and his manners at shardwide gatherings, I appreciate Nystul returning the ring that I had at the Pit Lord Event. While I certainly wouldn't have quit over it, a little "good-will" goes a long way in this game. The game that we all love.

Whatever.
I lost items due to a bug or hack as well. I would never lament or ask the person to return the stuff. I just know these kinds of players, and the last thing I would do is beg them to return anything. That's my pride. I also wouldn't quit UO over it. The only thing such incidents will affect is the way I play UO.
(Just to clarify: In this case, Nystul was not involved.)

*sigh* I didn't say you looted anything, Flutter, did I. No one here is saying you were responsible. I mentioned no names except Nystul's. Please don't be so sensitive. =( Stuff is not always about you.

La Belle, I certainly am not endorsing Nystul. And yes, he was one of MANY that have toured my museum. He's been there twice since I opened it in Zento and the house has had THOUSANDS of visits. So I wouldn't label us "BFF's" (I know you're crying Nystul, it'll be ok)....

I was merely posting that the ring had been returned because of the great support this forum's members showed when I mentioned it. Not only have members of my guild offered to make me a new ring, but people that I didn't really know stepped up to help out.
The MAIN point of my original post was to describe my philosophy on returning gear and the reasoning behind that mindset. No one has to adopt these views. Do as you wish.
I just believe that it is not simply EA/Mythic's resposibility to care for everyone, that we can do a certain level of charity that can go a long, long way to retaining our fellow players and attracting NEW players to this game.

I try to help others anytime I can, even if it is my enemy.

I pratice one of the religons you mentioned in your post La Belle and I absolutely feel that if you truly believe something, it comes thru in all areas of your life. I spend a good deal of my free time enjoying UO, the friends that I've made in the game particularly.

Back to a point that hasn't gotten alot of attention from others: helping others in-game.

While Pitr has done alot over the years thru helping new players entering New Haven, I feel there are others things we need to do, hence my philosophies on returning gear to our fallen enemies. But, I think we can do more.

Now, shame on me for expecting more from the UHall crowd, but there was a post that was titled "Why UO will never grow" listing the reasons from outdate graphics to the game being extremely difficult to "start" in.

I don't have the solution to alot of the problems listed. I also disagree with some of the opinions in the responses. What I can control and contribute is helping others. Now, this doesn't mean holding someone's hand until they get to Legendary Magery level. I truly believe that you can't help someone that doesn't want to help themselves. BUT, people also fall on hard times and look to this game as an escape. If these people are met with the same brutality and ill-will that they were met with in real life, they just might throw their hands up and say "to heck with it" and leave us all behind.

My main feeling is this: these people are valuable to us. A day doesn't go by that I don't see someone harrassing someone else in Luna, or flaming someone on these boards. Please take some time to consider that at this point in Ultima Online's history, we need to keep as many players in-game as we can and try to attract new players by sharing the exciting EM Events that are happening, the wonderful expansion Stygian Abyss (the best in the games history, imho), and all of the wonderful content that our Devs are introducing, at really a break-neck frequency.

Thanks for your time reading my posts and I hope that it is taken in the light in which it is intended. I love playing UO and want it around to share with my kids.

"Why UO will Never Grow"
http://vboards.stratics.com/showthread.php?t=171493

My only post in this thread was to offer any new player reading the post to try Catskills and I would give them a marked runebook, a 100% LRC suit or all 70s dexxor suit, and 500k check to get them started. There are some good opinion's from some Catskills players there, including Hawkeye and others.

I agree... I truly MISS Lost cause and Fuddrocker... even if we fought them 24/7.

About helping people... new players...

We have finally crossed the 6k trained characters since 2006... and we accounted each one of them.
I have bad news... numbers of new characters created in New Haven, that stayed around, have dropped to a sad figure of 8 this month...

May 2006 we got close to 300 new characters (291)
May 2007 it dropped to 256
May 2008 it dropped to 180
May 2009 it dropped to 87

This is usually the month with the highest number of newly created characters/returning players.

We trained over 3k characters from May 06 to January 07
from that point till now we only trained 2k more...

We really should cherish each player... friend or ingame foe...

(all values are of my own responsability based on the number of small towers we gave to the new players... and then keeping the runes...)

Hehe, that reminded me of the time Fudd killed the event moderator at the Malas PvP tourney a few years back. Everyone was like OMG!

It made for a very humorous night of UO! Also I definately would have a beer with all of you!

Eh, this will be long, but I figured why post 19 times! haha. Didn't reread or edit anything I said... Except this line :p

I would increase the Museum Security...
Fyi I used to be a BIG rares collector back in the day. I've since sold off my collection long ago but I still do have an interest in what kind of rares are out there, and the progression of Lykor's museum. I've been on dozens of private tours before on multiple shards, dozens of times.

Good for Nystul. You are a rich fellow of some standing in the community, a member of D/R, so Nystul sees the benefit to himself of returning your ring.
What benefit? Lykor is a great guy who has as far as I can remember treated me with respect. Unlike others he has yet to talk down upon me and try to make people think I'm this terrible person that some believe I am, and I doubt he ever will. Luckily for him I was the one who looted/insured it. I had no idea whose ring it was as I had about 100+ kills that night easily and wouldn't remember who it came from if I tried but he posted/mentioned it to me directly and it rung a bell. Will I always return items? Nope.

Forgive me my cynicism, but recently Nystul's crew looted entire suits from the corpses of Circle Alliance members they PK'd. Not only did they not return any of them, but Nystul continues to mock the incident in his sig.
They sure did. But as you said they PK'd the person. Although some people think it was "wrong" that they didn't return the items, but they and noone has to. Everyone will play the game the way they choose to. Wether it's being the good guy, or being the "bad" guy. But really the Felucca facet is there for a reason, to give players the place to be the "bad" guys. UO gives players the ability to insure the bulk of their items used to pvp. Sometimes the "worst" happens & you forgot to insure your items, or you ran out of insurance. It happens to the best of us including MYSELF. I got done imbuing items for my new character the other day & never insured them, it's easy to overlook with all the stuff written in the item property window now. When I realized I lost them I didn't immediatly place blame upon another player whatsoever. I knew it was my own fault, made new weapons & dealt with it rather than parading around making accusations that cannot be proved nor has ever been able to since insurance came out.

As far as my signature goes yes I do mock the whole incident. I had every intention of trying to get some items returned for those players until I decided to read the dozens of ICQs I received that day, and the outcome of some conversations I had. I was accused of being a hacker, cheater, exploiter & scammer in the world of Ultima Online before I even had the chance to log in that day. After even explaining that I was NOT there & had no doing in anything that happened I was still labeled as all of the above. I don't know about you or anyone else who plays this game, but I play this game for entertainment, it's a "hobby" for me. I drive ~70 miles one way to work a day & sometimes as everyone knows work can be a major pain! Maybe it was just one of "those days", but it really hits a nerve when after a long days work that I get time to relax & have fun in this game like we all wish to, that the exact opposite happens. Sure I could have been nicer about things, but I've been nice in the past in similar situations w/ people in similar relations to eachother & things still didn't go "good".

I've had items looted. I've been scammed. I've been harassed in this game. I've had my life threatened dozens of times. I've had my privacy "invaded", and my family members harassed over the internet (Myspace...). I've had not one, not two, not three, four, five or six, but seven characters that I've built since I've played this game looted, and then deleted. I've lost everything & I've restarted. I know how much those things can hurt, I know how much noone else wants to deal with any of it. Yeah my signature is just be being the partial ******* that I am, that will never change. I'm hated in this game, and that will NEVER change, no matter the amount of good I could ever do. I can't change peoples views upon me, nor do I want to. Everyone is their own person & perfectly capable of making their own decision, developing their own feelings & choosing to let the past/present/future along with others influence their judgement towards me. Judge away, I'm not stoping anyone.

Whether or not he personally looted your ring or the suits, I bet he has enough influence over his groupies to encourage the return of items.
Yes I looted the ring. Also, yes I do have the unfluence to encourage my FRIENDS (Not groupies...) to return items. But... There's a reason why people like me as a leader. I'm here to play this game how I want to & so are they. The LAST thing I want to do is tell them how & what they should do in this game. If they want to loot items from other players and we get deemed bad people, than so be it. It's the nature of the game, the intention of the facet (The risk of loss, the "thougher" ruleset, the chance of death). If we're playing the game as intended and others are going to define us as bad people for doing so, than so be it again. We're just playing the game. And yes, I know there's the rumor & accusation going around that it was all done via an exploit. But I can assure (Not that that means anything to most...) everyone that there was not one involved. I've already explained the incident several times on these forums & how things happened to my knowledge. If my guildmates were "cheating" they would tell me, and I 100% know that... But that's getting a bit off topic in a sense.

When Nystul turns into a real gentleman and returns the many items he's looted from others, then I may be impressed. People may indeed grow to express their true better natures, but one generous gesture from Nystul won't convince me.
I'm not here to convince you nor anyone how good of a person I am. But stop trying to judge me as a person, because you nor does anyone really know me as the person I am, but as the player I am. Yeah it's corny, but true. Also there isn't "many" items I've looted from players that I have not returned. There's been at least a dozen times I've returned full suits, and there will be more. But for a person like me deemed dirtier than the dirt he walks on, "good deeds" are overlooked a LOT easier than the bad ones. I'm not trying to use the fact that I do return things to make myself look better either. Also, yes, I have kept items. Infact I heard someone quit the game because I kept someones entire set of bows they PvPed with at one point. Unfortunatly for that person he went too far with his own actions in the past directly towards me. Sucks to be him, just like it sucked to have some dude making fun of my 7 year old brother because of how hard his childhood was at the time. I guess I told a friend something I shouldn't have. I've since learned to keep some things to myself, even if I feel I have a friend I can talk to.

With Nystul: fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice (and thereafter), shame on me.
:) Sounds good. But I'm not out to fool anyone. I'm just me. You'll never know what I'm going to do or say next, and neither will I!

Please don't be so sensitive. The point was: If Nystul likes you, you may have a chance at getting stuff back; if he doesn't, you don't. Hence my cynicism about his generosity.
True to an extent. If I like you you WILL get your stuff back, if not your stuff, it'll be replaced. If I don't like you, I'm not saying there isn't any chance, but I'm also not saying there is. Hard to understand. But there's more than like & dislike, I don't judge the majority of players in this game as I have no reason to. I'm very neutral towards the majority.

Nystul has stronger reasons to be well-disposed toward you and thus return an item, which was a positive act indeed, than to dislike you and not return it.
Already covered this, but you're wrong. No other reasons, no other motives. I just like the way Lykor has treated me despite what others have tried to drill into his head about me, and decided I should return the gesture. Lykor may be a rich guy in ultima, but oh boy, so am I. :)

Hum... I dislike Nystul, but I love a lot of his behavior...

two sides indeed...

(dislike towards the character, not the person... he rocks at field calling and tactics)
Thanks Pitr. Means something that you do know the difference between player & person. I feel people forget there is at times.

*nod* I don't know the RL person who plays Nystul.

For all I know, he may be a Pillar of his RL Community acting out his shadow side in a game.

I can have no opinion about the RL Nystul, except to guess that whoever he is he has a RL talent for organization and tactics.

Any opinions I may express concern the character known on UO as Nystul, not the person who operates him.
Thanks. Good to see you also arn't thinking of myself as the player I "play", so disreguard what I said about that earlier! I don't feel like scrolling up to find/edit it haha. :p But I feel I'm a great person IRL. My job requires me to work with the military of our country (For those in the US). We design, prototype & manufacture various forms of parts & equipment used for simple training, out to protecting our soldiers in the field. I love my job at times! This year I also donated "toys" to "toys for tots" to our local state troopers. A friend of mine wanted to do it, so I did. She's happy & I hope whoever get's em are too. Enough of that though. I'm sure I'll get made fun of for that ingame over the next few days! haha.

I agree... I truly MISS Lost cause and Fuddrucker... even if we fought them 24/7.

Well, I'm at a loss of what to make of this thread.

I certainly think it has been a good one, with many good things to read. This is what the forums needs versus the flame wars and other BS that is out there. Constructive ideas and thoughts worth reading.

Thanks, as La Belle said, to everyone that has posted. Also, thanks to those that said nice things about me. I don't think they're warranted, but they are appreciated. I just want to enjoy Ultima for as long as its around and want to do my part to contribute to Catskills.

I spend a good bit of money to keep our event items on this shard and I can't wait to re-open the museum to the public for all to see the new design.

Some of you may remember the last B^L auction during the summer...... WELL......

One of the first events we had on Cats when the EM Program was reintroduced was the Sea Siren Event. I was moving around that time and totally missed the event, along with many others that just weren't as in-tune with the EM Events yet.

By the time I returned, I saw many of the other museums that I frequent on other shards had the items from OUR event in their displays!

I decided then and there, that I'd do all that I could to keep at least one example of each event in my museum, which *usually* is public, save remodeling, so that others may see and enjoy the unique items that our EM's invent.

Fast forward to the auction: one of the sashes from the event came up and I was fortunate enough to have been able to buy it (fortunate also was Bishop, who reaped the benefits of me HIGHLY desiring his sash).

My point is this is my hobby. I don't play gold, I don't gamble. I simply wish to preserve these so-called rares for all to enjoy! Now, I will admit, I take tremendous pride in owning the items, but I do work very hard to find them and buy them, so maybe that's ok?!?

Well, thanks again for reading my blathering. I'll post in a new thread, probably early next week when the museum re-opens!
