i'm sure people will use it a lil' bit then it will die like before. but for now it's kinda neat to be able to speak to anyone in the game (well, who is in the channel).

it would be nice to be able to pull up a list of whose on (even if the list might be depressing). i am incredibly worried about spammers though; i have a feeling in a few days (at most) that's all the channels will become.

I hadn't thought of that....

To the degree to which that's true, I would argue we've lost something important.

Bank sitting was always important in UO.

How is one supposed to roleplay "global chat" messages?

Simply leave the channel and don't join or create one. You and anyone else may continue to play as you always have. Those interested in using the chat channels are free to do so. How is this a problem? Seems like the best of both worlds to me.

Odds are the spammer will still banksit, and alternate global chat lines with the usual "out loud" ones to try for buyers that have the chat turned off.

And, global chat is no harder to roleplay than party, guild or alliance chat. :gee:

Think of it as everyone being given a permanent item that allows limited telepathy.

ever since people stopped bank sitting in brit, to me that was the end of it, i don't consider sitting at luna the same thing, and roleplaying annoys me

I do not wish to be any chat systems EACH TIME when I log in, words popping up on my screen from people I don't know nor wish to know?? Also I disable the menu bar so to get in the chat menu and LEAVE IT I have to bring the menu bar back on screen and then click chat and then click leave.

Now if this was an option that you picked to enter and NOT FORCED on you then I'm all for it. So please change this to an option you pick to enter and not force it on us when we enter the game.

There will be trash talk, but the use of global channels far outweighs the negatives.

Sort of like in WoW the global chat is 60% trash and religious debates and sex talk.
But the remainder is actually useful especially when buying/selling and looking for groups!

I saw people using it yesterday to get Spellweaving Circles going, and you can use it to find peerless groups without having to be in a guild or use out of game tools. Very worthwhile!

You're right about that. But wrong if you add back on the RPG, which every MMO maker seems determined to knock off the end.

Edit to add: Why not enhance the experience of meeting places, like taverns? Build up the in-game experience instead of on the fringes in an out of character, chat room, way.

Seriously man - COME ON

Read the patch notes... when this is fully live you WILL NOT be auto dumped into a chat channel. It will be as if nothing ever changed. Should you choose, and you have made it clear multiple times that you don't, to use the new chat system you will be able to do so. Otherwise it will ba a non-issue.

In the "[UO Herald] Publish 63 Coming to Test Center Today!" post that "links" to the patch notes and includes updated detail from a UO Engineer found here: http://vboards.stratics.com/showthread.php?t=171332 you will find this info:

Stupid Miner said:
It's been an hour and i already hate the chat feature, can it be auto-toggled "off" instead of "on" when logging in?
This will be temporary until your home shard receives the new publish. Sorry for the inconvenience. Your current channel is saved across play sessions and this includes when you are not joined to any channel at all.

Phaen Grey said:
There desperately needs to be a way to leave the general chats, in the 2d client you select the channels and click leave and you are still in them.

Also is there a way to password a private channel?
As mentioned above, this will be temporary. Though, when you click 'Leave', you will actually leave the channel, just not receive any confirmation until the shard is updated with the new publish. To truly test this, you can try chatting after clicking on the 'Leave' button and you should receive a response along the lines of not being in any channel at the moment.

Password protection is still under discussion.

Never going to happen. EA dont want us to see how many people actually play this game. That can only mean its not many, as if it were a lot they'd be shouting it from the rooftops like Blizzard do.

I logged on via a non patched computer and was able to see who was online in the chat system. Around 50 ish on Europa General-Trammel last time I looked.

Except that the damn thing is enabled and puts you in "General Chat channel" at login automatically.

You have to open the friggin menu-bar, which I've disabled on all my characters many years ago, in order to switch channels.

There's no option to open the damn channel list with a macro either. You have to open the menu-bar first. Then you have to turn it back off once you've taken care of chat. EVERY dang time you login.

Major oversight, big, huge oversight, not having an option to turn it off and leave it off.

Not in the patch notes it's not. It only says that irregularities like auto dumped into the General chat channel at login will be addressed. I didn't see anywhere that we'll have to option to disable the chat system entirely.

What worries me is the decline of bank sitting culture; something which at its best has been analogous to an open air bazaar.

Granted, the best of that culture is long, long gone. But it's still been fun meeting people and selling goods that way. I didn't even mind that much when the center of activity switched from Brit to Luna.

Though on GL the WBB is becoming lively again since the redesign, if a shadow of its former self.

But if almost anyone can buy and sell goods without having to sit in a central location?

Yes I feel, if that's the result, that we've lost something. Nothing critical or game-stopping to be sure. But something.

Yeah, that's what I'm gonna have to do I guess.

True, but this is what I was referring to.

I can't speak for all other roleplayers, but with rare exceptions party, guild, and alliance chats were all definitely out-of-character. Selling goods at the bank, however, was always done 100% in-character for me. So I could bank sit, sell my stuff, and still be in a sense roleplaying.

But now if I'm negotiating a price or hawking my goods to people who aren't even there? Doesn't feel the same.

Oh, I'll find a way, I'm sure....I'll probably look at it as the word having gotten out. Kinda like how I can do it with selling through ICQ.

It won't actually impact my gameplay in an over-arching sense I reckon but....Still odd to think of no longer having to sit at a bank to hawk goods.

Combined with other little tid bits, the day is soon coming when all players, you included, will log on, buy and sell through some mechanic that includes delivery, and jump on global chat and go "LFG" for your "end game". Because it's "easier", and gamers "expect it".

The Age of Roleplayers is over. The Time of the Geeky Gamer has come.

In 2d, on one of my characters, I signed him in to the 'no chat' channel. Since then, each time that character logs in, I see two system messages :

First, "You have joined the Trammel General Chat channel"
Then "You have joined the 'no chat' channel"

And after that, I see no chat messages at all.... which sounds like what some people are after.

Edit : And that's survived two restarts of the client, and two reboots of the PC... whether it will always work that way, though, I have no idea....

Yes well it's not that bad.

I've actually found it rather useful in a way.

However, I do have a few suggestions I guess for the Dev's such as...

There needs to be some way to "report" abuse of the Chat.

Seeing as we have spammers spamming things that are against the ToS at Luna and nothing gets done about it when you page a GM... I seriously doubt paging a GM would help if the same individual was spamming like things in Chat.

Also... I should hope there are ways for the GM's whatever to be able to look back at the chat's logs if someone is being..... lets just say... Less than friendly in chat. Really there needs to be some sort of way to police this system so to speak... so it does not become out of hand.

I mean punk smack talk has a place and time I suppose but verbal harassment, or attacking someones character ie spreading lies and such about other player in chat would NOT be cool but needs to somehow be policed... I mean I can see where someone having a vendetta against someone else could try to use the chat system to basically ruin someone elses reputation and such... which I would think would be distressing...

Would be nice to be able to put someone on "ignore" in the chat...

changing color and font would be nice too.

Other than that I think this is a really cool addition and could be a very useful tool.

Been in-game for....about 45 minutes out of the last 2 hours, on and off.

Seen some global chat go by. I think I am in the Help and General Trammel channels.

(I'm on Great Lakes by the way.)

I've seen one guy trying to buy a big house. (I'm labeling this as Neutral.)

I've seen one person have a question about Bulk Order Deeds answered. (I'm calling this Positive, and in a big way at that. It was a very basic question, along the lines of "how do you get them," the kind of thing one feels embarrassed to bring to the boards...And, more importantly, not the kind of thing someone should have to come onto the boards to ask.)

I've seen people who appear to be doing an Ilshenar champ spawn keeping track of their progress. I haven't gone to check the spawn, because I'm waiting for an EM thing to start, but given that they are giving steady and realistically timed progress report, I'm betting that this is really going on, and it's not mocking. (I'm calling this Positive, because it lets people know about stuff that's going on. After this EM thing is over I'll definitely check and see if that group is still spawning. I could use some Replicas to sell! It foolishly never occurred to me that global chat would be use to get people together in-game to do stuff.)

Finally, I've seen Fellies saying such mocking things as "Hey everyone Harrower up at Island!" and "Let's go do Despise everyone!" (I'm calling this Negative. It's either mocking or an attempt to lure, or both.)

Of course theres pros and cons, hopefully most sellers will continue thier bank area tactics and only use the chat if no one seems to be at luna. Would be great for spellweavers needing a focus when thier friends arent online. Hopefully if you want to ignore someone on the chat channel you can add them to ignore list by typing in name and not having to target them. Im sure if theres someone you need to report for ill talk then the gm can check your personal chatlog for proof. They could maybe add something that detects and auto reports/warns someone promoting urls. Time will tell if this will work i guess.

It syncs differently every time I go to your posts ...exactly why I said time warp ...browser type does not matter.

Subject of Chat Channels though, heck when I first saw that red messaging going on down there, I thought a GM was trying to page me, because I knew it was not Guild message color, and not Party message color.

I actually found part of it useful and part of it entertaining. That is, until the guy selling UO gold began spamming like 2 or 3 times a second; the whole left side of my screen was filled with his pitches. I had to shut off the chat because it was so annoying. There does need to be some anti-spam code written in. He didn't even change a letter in the messages, from what I could see.
On the plus side, a couple of guilds made their own channels for hunts, there were some interesting conversations about various things, and some people coordinated where to meet using the chat. Also, a tamer brought me a fire beetle for my miner and we used the chat system to coordinate the deal.
It's going to be more useful than annoying once they make a few adjustments. A simple "off" button should help tremendously.

About bank sitting: Once Luna replaced West Britain, bank sitting was dead. There just isn't enough room in that small area. If they had made Luna bank as big an area as West Brit, there would still be a lot of bank sitters. However, there just isn't room for over 2 or 3 people to hawk their goods inside the Luna bank. There sure isn't room for all the tamers to bring their pets for sale, or for dozens of people to pick a spot to spam their pitches for houses for sale, rares and high-end equipment.

Spamming Chat

There was a guy sitting at Atlantic Luna bank on a young account spamming a web site in game to sell his gold. He discovered General-Trammel and then...

Version 2 of the spammer advertised his web site in chat. He would fill the screen with his web site ad and then get a message from a real player, "STOP that spam already!" then "STOP the web site spam you ^%$#&!" Back comes the gold seller with, "I'll stop when I get 15 more page views." followed by more web site spam.

That sounds like extortion to me. Easy to stop with a spam filter on the chat channels.

The UOW... gold seller has comtempt for our game staff. How about banning all char names that start with "UOW"?

Are there any more restrictions on young accounts that would help?

How about telling the GM staff not to interfere with player justice: Place a packy at Luna on every shard with one item in its pack and name it, "UOW hacked my account."

This is getting personal, UOW... vs our game. He hates our game rules so lets return the hate. And bend the rules to fight him.

I am very saddened by having to listen to all this crap. Extra channels are great but three is a reason for having diff guilds not be able to channel talk you and talk trash. god knows gm's won't filter it out or respond to the new potential of issues in less than an hour. they cannot handle the current work load in a short amount of time already.

I would argue we should separate out our personal like or dislike for that chat from the effect it might have on the game.

If you personally don't like the chat, it seems easy enough to get out of...Leave the channel you are in, or join a channel that's called "silence" or a less-used channel such as Ilshenar.

As to what effect it could have on the game overall. I don't think we know that yet. Positive effects and negative effects are both possible, and I'd guess about equally so.

But yeah if the issue is just "I don't like it and don't want to see it?" Highlight the channel you're in and click "leave," or highlight a channel called something like "silence" or "quiet" and join it. That part is easy-ish, and based on what the team's said is likely to become a lot more so. What's not easy is figuring out what lasting effects this might have.

I haven't minded the chat yet, but haven't spent much time on a busier shard like GL or Atlantic since it was implemented. When you're playing on a fairly quiet shard and no guildmates are also on, it's actually kind of nice to see a message flit by every few minutes so you know you're not completely alone! I've also seen it help make some sales of items that I doubt would have happened otherwise. Oftentimes on the small shards it's hard to find "basic" items for sale. I think the chat system will be helpful for people who are new to such a shard and have characters still in training make the connections needed to buy some of those items.

What I haven't seen so far on the couple of shards where I've played are people being obnoxious with spamming. On Formosa, I think someone was repeating a message periodically (hard to tell when it's in Chinese) last night, but he was spacing his messages about 3-5 minutes apart.
