I take this to mean that whichever channel you are in using the appropriate command will allow you to chat in that channel.Classic Client 7.0.4.0:
•‘Chat’ button on the menu bar will now open a Channel Selection window instead of the Chat window.
•Channel Selection window will allow users to join, leave, or create a chat channel. User may only participate in one channel at a time.
•Text from a chat channel will appear in the System Messages area and in the Journal.
•Players may use the comma key (,) to participate in a chat channel.
Enhanced Client 4.0.4.0:
•Added new button on the menu bar that opens the Channel Selection window
•Channel Selection window will allow users to join, leave, or create a chat channel. User may only participate in one channel at a time.
•Text from a chat channel will appear in chat tabs that have the ‘Custom’ chat text filter enabled.
•Players may use /c, /chat, or the comma key (,) to participate in a chat channel.
NOTE: Due to the difference in schedules of client patches and shard publishes, users will experience minor irregular behavior with this system when using the updated clients on shards that have not received the new publishes. This includes missing messages when leaving a chat channel, always auto-joining the General-Trammel channel on login, and seeing a non-finalized list of available default channels (The final list will only include: General, Looking For Group, Help, and Trade).
Thank you very much for that. I now feel almost as old as I actually am. My question, stated so poorly, was did you find this in place on a prodo or the test shard?Whatever memorex is, but you can go have a look at it by clicking the "Chat" thing....
I didn't receive any spam myself, but I assume you could join/create another channel or leave all chat channels and just use the normal method of communicating.Ok, How do it turn the spam crap off? I don't need to be sitting here and get some scripter spamming some site.

Cyrah, you can switch to your own custom channel which will be free of the general clamor. If you enable the UO Menu Bar, there's a chat button which will let you switch channels and create custom channels.I clicked leave chat on the gump and the text is still popping up. Why?
I am not thrilled seeing f... off on my screen is all.![]()
Will we be automatically in a chat every time we log in? Hope not.
I will now read thread for answers.![]()
I will not use it simply because it puts your charactor ID in front of everything saidClassic Client 7.0.4.0:

*Has no idea what memorex is....or betamax or 8 tracks...nope...never heard of it.*
Gonna be interesting to see who is using the new chat system and for how long it can make it.
And what, exactly, is anyone going to do with that?I will not use it simply because it puts your charactor ID in front of everything said

There may be a couple of reasons people don't like it that you can see a character's number:And is it bad that others can see one's own character ID ?
Why, if I may ask ?
Ask yourself if you ever need to type in your char id? Do you even know what it is (prior to this)? I suspect you would need physical access to the datacenter to do any real damage. There may be a couple of reasons people don't like it that you can see a character's number:
- If people are paying attention, it may eliminate any confusion that you and maybe others may have deliberately tried to cause by creating character's with the same name and that are dressed identically.
- If you like to cause havoc by using a disguise kit to conceal your thief character's true name, the character number may give you away. Again, folks would have to be paying attention in order to catch someone doing this.
And without someone from the UO team actually telling us that the character numbers cannot be used by anyone for malicious purposes, anyone who wants to use the chat system at this point is kind of taking a leap of faith that the system wasn't released with a major, glaring security loophole in it (i.e., the display of character numbers).
Are you using a custom skin? That tends to hide the new button. It's a bit annoying since it makes the menu bar longerI'm really liking this (in EC, the 2d version looks dodgy but who cares) but is there a list of commands somewhere for changing channel etc? I can't find that supposed Chat button on the menu bar.
Yeah I noticed this also as I had that menu in the lower right corner... fixed it by scaling the UI to 0.90 and it works greatAre you using a custom skin? That tends to hide the new button. It's a bit annoying since it makes the menu bar longer![]()

Please make this a priority. Speaking for most color blind people, the orange is very difficult to see, much less read. Something in a bold blue or darkish silver would be very nice to have as options. There is no way to customize the chat color in the Classic Client at the moment. There are plans to implement this feature, but in the meantime, we will probably roll out a mini-patch in the near future to have the client use a more visible color against the Journal.
