Your first memory of adventuring outside of the town guards...

Having a few beers and messing about with UO tonight for the first time in a while and got a bit nostalgic.

I remember it well the first proper hunt that I went on, it was an amazing couple of hours that ended in disaster.

Started attempting to travel from Brit to Trinsic with a RL mate who had got me into uo, this was around 1999/2000... We were ultimate newbs, and met up with some more experienced guys before too long and they suggested we go to the Orc Fort at Cove, which was something I had no knowledge of.

Now, I can't remember exactly how we got there but by the time we arrived we had killed so many mosnters we all had full packs of gold and items... I was quite excited and really wanted to get to a bank asap! Spent a bit of time at the orc fort, the guys we were with seemed confident that we would be able to fight off any dreaded PKs that might show up to rain on our parade! So after a while of killing orcs the inevitable happened, a crew of reds ambushed us, they went right for the strong players that had been acting as our schaperone, after a frantic couple of minutes the reds had wiped out the blues and were coming after me, i did my best to get out of there absolutely desperate to protect my loot, but they got me the swines!

The sheer adrenaline of the whole situation was unbelievable and even though the outcome was not good, I had an excellent time and couldn't wait till I was strong enough to become a badass pk lol

Anyone else?

I know exactly what you mean about the adrenaline. I used to get adrenaline rushes from everything in UO...even just fighting off a wolf out near Britain as a newb was an adventure because at any time while fighting a PK could come by and take you out so you had to be ready to run back to the guards.

I think the very first time I left the guard's protection was about 3 minutes after I started playing. A friend who already played on Great Lakes made me start my character in Yew and took me out in the woods towards his house, but it was night-time and I couldn't see anything and got hopelessly lost and eventually either an ogre or an ettin killed me.

I restarted in Britain on Atlantic and that was the end of that.

Circa Nov 1998: Made my character on, I think, Chessy. Took time to look around town, figure out what all was what, get the equipment I wanted. Walked outside of town (Trinsic) and immediately was greeted by around 5-7 PKers, just hanging out right outside the guard zone. Apparently, my 100gp of items was just too valuable, so they killed me and dismembered my body (remember when we could do that?). I rezed somewhere outside of town, walked back into that area completely naked, and was of course killed again. Logged out and figured, heck with it.

I still ended up playing, but the entire point of it being "online with a bunch of other players" became moot to me, since it appeared that 90% of the other players were just jackasses looking to ruin other's players fun. Mostly just hung out in town or someplace completely away from other players.

So, my first experience wasn't quite as great, and was likely part of my polarization against PvP in general.

Started a couple weeks after trammel. Ran between Brit and Trin and got attacked by this group of reds. Called up my buddy that got me into the game to come help me with this group of evil murderers. I don't know how long he waited for me in fel while I taunted these reds in trammel. He beat me up for weeks about getting attacked by a brigand camp.

Yes Tandek I remember being able to dismember bodies and keep the head, that was so good, i would love it if that was still possible.

Used to be the ultimate way to kick someone when they were down, dismembering their corpse after killing them heheh....

It was funny back then trying to hunt monsters with the ever present danger of pks dropping in at any moment. It was exciting.

I remember we used to hunt Liches at Deciet and all of a sudden you would see that red name and it was a scramble to hit the recall macro and get the hell out of there lol!

Although I play fel mostly these days i'm certainly not anti trammel, but I really do miss that risk and excitment that used to be a constant factor back in the early days.

lol, that is funny.

Worse than that, my first 5 minutes in the game I got Guard Whacked when i tried to attack a guard on in north west britain thinking it was another player lol

In a previous life - back in '98 - I started out in Trinsic. It was a busy, thriving city in those days, full of adventurers, more than a few thieves, and numerous clueless newbies like me.

Having no mentor, I decided to earn a living as a tailor and spent the majority of my time in the tailor shop. However, before too much time had passed, curiosity overcame my work ethic. I finally decided to venture outside the safety of the city walls to see what might be out there.

I had heard rumors about merciless player killers and dangerous wild creatures. So it was with a genuine sense of dread that I took my first tentative steps across a bridge and found myself standing at the edge of a vast wilderness. Quite suddenly, the roar of a great bear reached my ears. It sounded so close (and so hungry). In a panic, with heart racing, I turned tail and dashed back to that beautiful, safe city.

I learned a short time later (to my great shame and embrassment) that I had been in no immediate danger from the wandering bear....

On another day, I was murdered by a mongbat, but that's another story.

Being ganked outside of downtown Trinsic like the poster above mentioned. This was Chesapeake shard back in the day. :)

Losing my first valorite armor set to a pk outside of Delucia...course I earned it back 2 mos. later when I killed the one that killed me and got MY suit back and his too. ;)

In due time us newbies of the *class of 98* all began hanging out in the then new Delucia. Them oldoworlders would come into the new lost lands and we remembered them from pking us in their original UO lands.

Wellllllllllllllll we got our numbers up, we learned magery, we gated some of them lost souls to wonderous lost lands places like Terathan keep, Ophidian hellhole and got our guilds together red newbies and blues alike and we GANKED them back on OUR TURF the new lost lands ! :) JUSTICE I meant ahem yes we formed our own posse of NEWBS against the old vets of 1 yr old that seemed to be far more lost in the lost lands than we were. :) I was part of a BLUE justice knight guild that teamed up with some reds guilds and well .......the lost lands were OUR TURF...we earned our place as a lil force of newbies to be reckoned with ...in the end some of them *vets* of 97 became our friends and we were no longer the newbies cuz the *class of UO 99 had begun then...........then created trammel........ *sigh* Everything changed after that.

Ah well twas fun, add the ganking at the bridge as ya get to the orc fort in the lost lands. . added a new meaning to trolls under the bridge ! PKS ! lol

Well, I read forums alot in those days (98).. just like now. So I was pretty well aware of the dangers. My lumberjack had been confronted on the edge of the Yew forest a few time, but I was always able to flee back across the town line.

One day there was a mid-day server down and when it came back up, there were very few players at the Abbey. So clever me decides its time to venture forth a bit in the relative safety of off hours.

Traveling around for probably an hour or so, I ended up along the mountains west of Trinsic poking through vendors there. And I found some nice chain mail at a good price. Back to town and then to the vendor I purchased my wonderful new armor.

It was probably a minute or less later I was jumped by two reds. That led to a chase for a short time before I was killed and dry looted. I did get aid from a nice guy who tried to help and successfully killed one of the reds before being killed himself, losing most of his goods, and a packy full of ore. We commiserated for a short time and I thanked him for his efforts before heading back to Yew.

It was a long time before I headed off to the wilds again. I didn't find the adventure particularly fun, only as a setback to my goals of building up my woodsman.

Edited to add: On the upside I met some nice people in the game, and later that year met someone I went on to meet in RL and start a relationship with. That my current SO, we are still together over 11 years later. We rarely get time to play together anymore though.

That dogs are capable of killing men brandishing longswords...

I didn't even put up much of a fight! The worst part though was when I realized that I couldn't win this fight, I ran back into Brit like 15 screens away. Thinking I was safe, I got up to put the kettle on to make a cup of tea and when I came back I was dead with that damn dog standing nearby.

Edit: This thread for the most part seems to be "Remember the first time you were pk'd and was it enjoyable?" I played this game since the very start and of course I'd been pk'd plenty of times (Also did my fair share). Anyways, my point is that while I know people who were pk'd just after logging in, most people I know experienced some other form of embarrassing death prior to their first meeting with pks. Even on atlantic, it wasn't like you had groups of pk's always posted up at the exits to town. Well, maybe at brit GY =D. The dreads with skill hung out in the dungeons and Trinny for example, while the annoying mule and newbie killers stuck to the relative safety of areas like the mountains and places they were less likely to find decent antis. At least that's how it seemed to me, I'm sure others will have varying opinions...

Before I ever was PK'd, I was stolen from quite a few times traveling by use of the old moongate system... (Anyone else remember the moongates? I think it was New moon, Waxing Crescent, first quarter, full, etc etc)

When I first played UO my friend who got me involved said I should make my first character just a throw away character and go out of town get killed and go around as a ghost. You could go into peoples houses and check out there stuff. In fact there was a bug where you could delay accepting a ress and step intot a house then accept and loot the house. I never did that but I did go and run round as a ghost to see what was around. Then I created my first real character and trained up weapons skills on the dummies. Then I would venture out of Trinsic through the east gate where I could avoid the reds. Daily I left to go hunting in the jungle and came back through the same route. Never had problems with a red but did have a blue guy who decided to pk me. I was playing my archer character trying to kill skeletons and he was a swords guy Illustrious Lord too and I knew this hide by a house and auto target archery thing that kept him from killing me. He obviously wasn't too good since I was a newb and he had been playing a while. I made it back to town ok but anounced to everyone he was a blue pk when I saw him in town. First time I was killed it was a grizzly bear LOL (and the dreaded lag monster.) My computer acutally froze and I had to log off and back on but by that time I was a meal for the bear. I walked into this mage guys house that I knew and he ressed me and gave me some stuff but I coudln't find my body and lost all my stuff (which wasn't much)

The first day I started playing some guy said he would help me train my combat skills. So I followed him out of town and attacked him like he said to. Of course he ended up killing me and I was wondering why he wasn't helping resurrect me.

This exact situation was warned about in The Second Age manual but I hadn't reached that part yet. This happened in August 1999.

So after watching your companion offed you accepted their offer and managed to go from neutral to dastardly in a matter of two minutes? mmMm... Or maybe you mean red in "spirit" from that point on?

Sorry. I just don't understand. How long until you hit -125 noto?

Started on Great Lakes Jan 98 I think?? Made a miner after I saw all of the naked ones running back and forth from the Minoc Mines to the bank. Did that until I was confident I could venture out. Went out to the Mines north of Minoc, to this little Cul de Sac that's out there. Mined while hidden, got full ingots, started to run alllllll the way back to town, and got killed by Sunny Black (as did many players back then on GL)....

Not the first time I went out east of Brit but close, I attacked an orc near the edge of the road. Turned out to be a player in a mask. He actually ranted at me for 20 seconds before turning my screen all gray.

My first trip outside town I remember killing hinds past the ferry outside Skara Brae. My friends had a small house near the docks there. I wandered a bit too far to the NE and killed my first orc. I was so excited since it almost killed me a bunch of times. I had actually killed a monster after all those stupid deer! I was so proud of my self I went looking for another. I found my next orc and in a second I had my first trip to monochrome. I had found an orc mage and had no idea what I was up against.

I didn't know what to do so I logged out until the next day when my friend could come help me. My frist PK was the next day, but I knew how to res myself by then. :)

I was killed by a red on my 1st time, hehe. After that I would venture up and try to take on some undead, only to be killed by the lich. I still have nightmares of that cackle, even when I am running around lower cove getting essences, I twitch at the sound.

Late 1998, I started in Brit. Wandered thru town East into the woods there and decided to attack a great hart. Well I died and had no idea how to get rezzed.
Then I started another character, this time in Moonglow. Some mage was conjuring water elementals immediatley ouside the guard zone South of town. So I started whacking it with my practice sword and gaining skill. I thought this was cool. But alot of players showed up and I could no longer see the elemental anymore. I trying to click on the elemental but clicked on another player who promply killed me for it.
Lol, good times.

I got my adrenaline going just walking the brit fields in fel this week. I was on the run with my Draconi jack o lantern and the spell In Sanct Grav following me.

My UO virginity was taken by an efreet but my most memorable time was just after that when I met my first Ancient Wyrm in Ilshenar. I caught one glimpse of that majestic beast and my guildmates were still looking for me 5 screens away. I earned the nickname Nikes from our GM that night. In the end and multiple deaths later we skewered it in the belly and divided its scales that stayed locked down on my steps until my 3rd house. I never wanted to bank sit again after that and my quest for death robes continues. Ask anyone at our community hunts *grins*

My first time playing I started in Minoc was afraid to go out side of town but did so anyway to mine south of town past the tents.

I seen a lizardman I noticed it was the same size i was. I knew I didn't have a chance against that.
I ran up and boxed it and ran away with no way to heal I ran back to town knowing it was way to much for me. I ask some people for help to kill the lizardman so I could get back to mining. About 5 people ran out to kill the lizardman and after about 10 hits from the powerful swords it died.
I remember one of them thanking ME for showing them a monster to kill. One of them was all happy about the 35 gold that was on it, he was saying he wants to go back to the smithy and buy a better weapon.

after I loaded up my first bag of ore I ran back to the city to smelt it then came back to hit the same hill again I seen reds run past killing some of those guys that helped me.
I ran under a tree and didn't move they seen me but couldn't find me. it was very sad and scary.

July 5, 1998:

A new me was born on Lag Superior (it was years before its name got changed to "Lake". Woo hoo!

I picked my starting city, Minoc, and promptly began to run around doing the exploring thing. I think I put my first 100 gold in the bank, but it doesn't matter at this point since i didn't die (oddly enough, I was the exception then). While exploring the area around the mines north of Minoc (now the T2A passage), I came across what could only have been a massive guild war. There must have been 20 bodies laying around (both red and blue)

In the middle of this field of bodies, a single mongbat had spawned. Now I had no idea that PvP actually happened, as my RP/MUD/MUSH experiences in the past had been happy fun lands compared to the nightmare that was UO. So naturally, I thought the mongbat had caused the whole mess!

I spent weeks avoiding mongbats like the plague until finally I accidently killed one while running by. Then I realized how much I didn't know on that first day.

One of my earliest memories occurred right after T2A was released. I remember running allll the way from the Papua mage shop to Delucia. This was back in the day when a bite from a silver serpent meant certain death. I remember my heart racing as I ran and ran. I'd run until I'd see a silver serpent, then I'd turn around and run the other way. It was great.

I never had trouble with any reds. I wore GM valorite platemail. My life's mission was to one day be good enough to kill a lich at the City of the Dead.

Was the first night of Retail Release. Left Britain to try to travel to Skara Brae (I knew the way, as I am an old Ultima fan and the landscape is essentially the same as from Ultima IV). Server crashed and reverted to before my character existed, so I made it again and tried again...

UO was kinda like that for a few weeks/maybe a month... Heh. Things were bad in the early days of MMOs. ;)

I still remember the conversation I had with the red guys while I was hiding under the tree. Then they left and I went back to mining for a while. One of the trips back from town one of those red guys was hiding under a tree waiting for me.

I ran under a tree and again had another conversation with him trying to lure me out from under the tree.

a few hours latter I went back to mining and on one of the trips back all three of them was waiting under a the trees AND waited for me to pass them and hit(mine) the hill. When they came out i ran directly into one of them towards a tree i got bloodied up but lived AGAIN. Oh they were pissed at that point. It was a time when you could just tab out and brake combat.

I left the smithy business after that got into tailoring and bought the first tower built on Pacific shard less then a month after server start up. It fell from not having a key on me when refreshing and a GM gave me another tower.

Very odd times.

I started on the first day of UO's release. Started in Yew, at the Empath Abbey. I had walked into the town proper, and was heading west towards the Yew Courts and Jails, exploring. Back in those days, this area between the city and the courts was not guard protected, and I saw another player attack a third. The third ran, and I gave chase to the PKer, attacking him with my bow as he chased his intended victim. Bows were crappy in the beginning and I was just finding out how crappy as I couldn't seem to do much damage to this PKer while he chased the other guy.

Eventually the fleeing player ran to the courts, where the guards were active. I didn't know this. I shot and hit the PKer, and for my valor got instantly guard whacked (they teleport to you and hit you with a halley and a lightning bolt that insta kills you). The first time you get guard whacked, believe me, you jump out of your chair, heh.

The first time you get guard whacked, believe me, you jump out of your chair, heh.

This is either a lie or you forgot the old days. Lightning guards didn't exist until after trammel.

In 98 I was wandering north of the Britain crossroads which was imfamous for Pks a the time, but not knowing any better I happily trapsed through not paying any attention to the group sitting by their houses. About half way to the orc fort I was horrendously mobbed and then hacked up by the same group I had just passed. I distinctly remember staring at my screen wondering what the hell had just happened. I didnt quite understand when I got back to my corpse why my new heavy archer amror and shiney katana of might were missing.

I remember Sir Bart.
I started out with a swordsman with tactics and healing I think. Within 5 minutes I decided to leave brit. I got attacked by a mongbat(lesser). I thought "this should be easy", but I got merked fast. The only thing I could think of were the mongbats in the Underworld of UltimaV(they rolled 15 deep and were very hard to kill). So I decided to avoid all mongbats for about a month, I was seriously affraid of 'em.
Anyways, I got rez'ed and returned to get my body. Thank god there was someone to kill the vicious mongbat...his name was sir bart. I didn't notice he was red until the 2nd rez kill.
Does anyone else remember this guy on GL? Omg,omg, omg not again!

My rl neighbor and Starcraft junkie friend introduced me to the game in 99. He immediatly brought my fencer to lizardmen in despise. Looking back I think he was training healing more than I was training fencing. He rez'ed me like 10 times and then brought me to the headless guys around the corner.

Well, it's not a lie.
That would leave a very reasonable assumption that I simply forgot that little detail and remembered a mix of past experiences involving guard whackings.

Which leaves me wondering why you have to be such an arse about it.

The guards hit for a long range back then. I killed many guards for the chaos shields I remember their limits

Before T2A? I remember my father in law introduced me to the game. So him and my brother in law took care of me. I was never alone until T2a and the city of the dead came out. I loved it there. But the noto pks back then were tough. It was on PAC. But they actually helped me learn how to fight and since it was fight or run, I fought back. Those were fun days.

I never even got to try out guard zones. My brother-in-law played, and he went on vacation and let me play it for like a week. I used his dexxor/theif on cats and was in bucs den. I would steal whatever and loot whatever I could. attacking whoever was being attack, and having a blast. I of course had to go out and get my own when he came back. I never really worried about pks after all that killing and stealing. I knew the risk and prepared for them on my account.

Yes Tandek I remember being able to dismember bodies and keep the head, that was so good, i would love it if that was still possible.

Used to be the ultimate way to kick someone when they were down, dismembering their corpse after killing them heheh....

Mistura, do you remember if you behead after the shards split into tram/fel or was it only before?
