Random annoying load of "n00b to Siege" questions.

Ok, well, I'm sold on trying out Siege finally, but I have a bunch of questions...

1. Are there any "hated" character types? For example several years ago on the prod shards you just DID NOT TAKE a tamer to Fel as you'd be targeted by everyone. I'd hate to pick a "hated" type like that on Siege...heh.

2. Are there any "required" skills? Like in the old days, before the T/F split, most people had a least a little Hiding in their templates - Hiding wasn't difficulty based then.

3. What's the best way to start a char? I know there's several different ways to roll a toon now (haven't made a new char in about 5 years!) ... What's the best method and settings to use?

Shard needs more straight out mages; You could go hide, ninja mage to begin with. If you are interested in runnign amage, i can hook you up witha full spell book and an imbued lrc (lower reagent suit-you no needz regs) training suit.

Shoot for

gm anat
120 mage
120 eval
100 resist
100 ninja
100 hide
100 med

Start your char with 50 ninja, 50 resists. If you have soul stones you can easily add tame, vet, lore, and stealth to doa stealth tamer (most hated temp on the shard btw but a good maker).

put about 15 in dex, 15 in int, the rest in str.

1. Tamers that pvp aren't well liked, and people are getting tired of stealthers since they are so predominent. Stealth/Ninja/pvp/tamers should all be burned at the steak.

2. Not really, although because there is no recall or sacred journey here, more people opt to pick up magery on their template. I'm not a mage so my steeds have logged many many miles here on Siege.

3. It depends on the skills you want to train in. For example, it is very very east to train mage/med/eval with lrc suits and mage weapons. so no point wasting free points on those. It is much harder to train inscription, so you would want to start with 50 inscription. Let us know what skills you plan on training, we'll tell you what skills to start with.

1. I'd think stealth tamers are about the most disliked at the moment. Stealth dismounters are a close second. If you're using stealth defensively, I don't think too many people will complain... loudly.

2. Nothing's required. Any skills can be used in any combination to varying degrees.

3. That depends on what type of character you want. Generally, you'd want to start with the two hardest skills to raise at 50. Anybody from NEW would be a good source of info, been a while since I've started fresh and I always preferred the harder way of doing things anyway.

Resist is one of the easier skills to get to 50. Is it protection that lowers magic resist by 35 or something? Just cast that, and cast clumsy on yourself until you're 25 displayed skill.

Unless something's changed since last time I did it.

Last time I trained resist at low levels was pre-aos:).

Actually Id probably rather have anat at 50 right off the bat than resists come to think of it.

Why ninja-mage? Pure flat-out mage no good?

Pfft, anatomy you can train up with by targeting a dog over and over. Boring, but easy/cheap.

I think the ninja would be to help with dismount ganks. If your mount is killed, you can go into a ninja form and zip to freedom. If that's the route you go, 50 hide/ninja would be my recommendation.

Magery's easy enough to train up with a wand, bashing goats. Or whatever it is that one does with goats to feel the magic.

He suggested pure mage at first, but as a new person you may want to start off as a ninja mage because:

1. Hide/stealth to get you out of trouble while you are still progressing your skills.
2. pvp usually happens in groups. While new, you will probably be solo, and very likely to be dismount/ganked. The ninja helps you avoid being dismount ganked by transforming into an animal capable of running at mounted speeds.

Alot of people run ninja mages because of the stealth dismounters....they're everywhere. Kinda sucks to get dismounted, a dragon or two on ya and a few armor ignoring bastards hitting you over and over. with ninja, if you can live through the first few seconds you can pop animal form and make a smooth get away.

Aha.

Also been strongly thinking about a Thief... o_O

UO was and still is terribly unique in that is has a PvP stealing system. It's the only MMO I know of that does. :D

thief mage would work as well.

here is the template I run; it takes a nice faction artisuit though.

gm mage
120 eval
100 anat
120 parry
120 resist
70 med
90 ninja

I bless a faction orny, use a crystaline to get me to 120 mage, factioned folded steel glasses, RBC, and feys. I round it out with mr/lmc pieces made by my imbuer, and shields of invulnerablity. It'sa great temp, but costly.

the one I gave you will keep you alive and making gold at minimal cost.

I would probably replace the resists with 75 stealth until you get your ninja trained up. Matter of fact I would go with 90 ninja instead of 100.

Once you have your sea legs on siege you can take off the training wheels (hiding/stealth) and play a real mage template:).

I started in july and if you go thief dont waste starting skill points on anything but hiding other thief stuff is easy (boring) to train in safety but if you got the hiding to 50 then getting stealth to 25 (the auto stealth min) is no big deal. I had resist and stealth 50 but like others said resist is easy to raise with magery. Maxed this template out in a month or so. I have soulstones with Alch 100 to trade out resists for more offensive exp pot throwing. If i rerolled char I would have went 50 hide and 50 imbue as this skill sucks at low levels.

My Template
90 wrestle
75 magery for gating and healing
100 ninja
100 hiding
90 snoop (+10 from bandana given as NEW grad present use this as siege bless item)
65 stealth (+10 from bandana)
100 stealing (+10 bandana)
100 resist (gives me all 40 resist naked and para rarely holds me long)

What I would have recommended was start with 50 necro/50 spirit, train to 60/60 summon a dark wolf, tame a pair of Bake's and you can at least farm some spawn to get you on your feet financially. At least that's what I tried only to find you can't do that with Bakes anymore.

The equivalent would be Bouras they are very easy to tame and control (the "Ruddy" type ) and a pair can kill tsuki wolves/bakes (but stay away from Oni's) /liches/elder gazers with a little healing - again this for a non-tamer looking to make some gold to get them started. I think anyone can have a pair of Ruddies.

Well, that depends on what kind of thief. Typical thief is a mage thief.
Mage thief is normally something along the lines of:
105 magery
75 stealth
100 hide
100 med
120 stealing
100 snooping
120 ninja / 120 wrestling
Maybe eval in place of ninja, if you want a more offensive mage base. With eval or ninjitsu you just run a mage weapon in place of weapon skill.

What about old-school Stealing/Snooping/Fencing/Poisoning/Tactics/Anatomy/something else type "Assassin" templates?

B

Black magick

That one is a bit more about taste. Poisoning is pretty easy to counter with cure pots and arch cure, but some people like it. That and its more geared toward taking out pvmers. Against pvpers tactics is a better choice. Something along the lines of:
115 stealing
100 snooping
100 hiding
75 stealth (80 if you go with poisoning and decide to use an assassin spike or dagger)
120 fencing
120 ninjitsu
90 tactics / 90 poisoning
A shown thief template like you suggested can be done, but its a lot harder to stay alive. Its also harder to get a theft off once everyone knows you are a thief.

this is the thief temp i use:

120 stealing
100 snoop
100 hiding
75 stealth
110 magery (i use a mage wep -21)
105 ninja (need it for reliable llama form, gotta escape with your loot)
60 SW (for pixies of doom!)
the rest i am kinda messin around with, putting it into detect hidden, but i dunno how effective that will be at 50ish, i currently have it in necro (for wraith and spike), but i dont like it.

Just remember, with a thief, you arent going to be able to stand toe to toe with a pvper, so no use wasting the skill points to beef up (and still get pwned). If your gonna be thief, and wanna kill someone, gotta catch em off guard, use shurikens, some spells, mage wep, and vollem or pixies to make it easier. also, the use of friends helps too.

Thief is definitely fun though. nothin like bein a mischief maker.

Eh.

I know it sounds lame, Carebear/RP like, and ... well, lame, but man... I just can NOT get into the idea of Ninjas, Samurai, and that kind of ... stuff ... in a Medieval/fantasy themed game, especially a game with the Ultima name on it. I KNOW I KNOW, it's just a game, and the Ninja stuff is powerful but man... Freekin' NINJAS!? in Ultima? Sigh.

:D

ya, but from a thief standpoint, if you wanna be able to escape with your loot or be able to keep up with your marks, it is a necessity. nothin like makin a steal, LOLing as you lama form and haul llama a$s away. plus, the use for DP shurikens is awesome. why spend 100 points in poisoning when you can spend it in ninja and get free mount speed AND DP? but ya, i know what your saying about the medieval thing. Its like Spike TV's Deadliest Warrior lol. Ninja Vs Knight... ninja wins!

0 ninja means all the other llama, wolf or kirin running thieves will laugh at your ghost back at the guild house :p I would say most thefts I have ever successfully pulled off have been due to animal form. And EVERY gank or ambush I have survived was due to animal form and resist magic. Ninja at GM is almost mandatory for thieves and almost half the other siege templates around right now.

Ok - final question(s) - I still haven't make my Siege character yet. :D Yes, I really do plan things out THIS much. Heh. OCD tendencies FTW! :D

Are 108M or lesser Vet Rewards worth anything on Siege? My secondary account has 2 unchosen and if they have value, I'd be willing to trade them for a starting "stake" of money, gear, advice, etc, to help me get started on Siege. (Or if they are useful, I'll keep em for myself).

If not, I'll use my primary account which has much, much less time on it (and no rewards).

Soulstones....soulstones are gold here on Siege as they allow you to switch out skills between your characters. You'll want to keep your vet rewards for soulstones.

200k to buy an 18x18 plot.
200k to build walls.

400k needed.

You can easily make 1 million gold a week making and selling bolts of cloth or leather if you really work at it. If you don't really work at it, you still can easily make 500k in 2 weeks and afford your home. The ONLY issue with housing is, if you have magery you can place your home anywhere you want since you can gate. If you don't have magery, you're going to want a home close to a moongate for easy access. You will then have to compromise on size of your home versus gate proximity, but you can almost always find max storage home plots within a 30 second/1 minute run to a moongate.

That's ... amazing. I've been trying to score an 18x18 on Atlantic for about 3 weeks - and I have and am willing to spend 100 million if I have to... And nothing!

Wow. :D

Put in the time and I'd almost be willing to bet you could find a keep spot within a month, though not in a prime location. The time required would simply be earn the 1 mil gold for the placement price, and spend a few hours a day checking the less popular areas for keep sized plots (ice island, trinsic swamps). Worst case save up 2-4 mil gold and buy a keep from someone else.
