Well if his facebook and linked in resume is any clue, he is no longer with the team.
Do you realize how small the games industry is, and how hard it is to get a good job in it? You don't want to be known as "that person" who can't keep their mouth shut when crap happens because no one will want to hire you. They already have 100 other qualified people who want that job, and they don't need you.Hopefully he didn't sign some non disclosure agreement for free. They'd have to pay me for me to shut up. But hopefully some announcement will come soon about the direction of UO. Hopefully it's not this "wild Wild West" stuff
What you just said doesn't apply to IT. The IT industry loaded with contract jobs. Infact in Arlington , VA has more jobs then people....Do you realize how small the games industry is, and how hard it is to get a good job in it? Nonsense. How are you doing the community a favor by not speaking about what happened and why it happened? It only favors an employer who's motives and organizational issues have been questioned by the community. It favors you if you signed a NDA and are now LEGALLY BOUND to not speak.BTW that goes out to anyone who is friends with Draconi or anyone else who lost their job. You are doing them no favors by talking about it (if you have personal information as to who lost their job or whatever). The best thing you can do is keep your mouth shut, you really don't want to cost them a job somewhere down the road. EA has rehired people they have let go of before, just FYI.
If you're not implying anything by the statement "some are offended, not all..... hope he gets that," then I question why you bothered posting it at all. The only logical conclusion to your post is that you mean, "Hey, just remember, not all of us are offended by it, therefore, it's okay." Otherwise, what's the point of pointing out that some people aren't offended by it? Clearly the people who use it as a derogatory term aren't offended by it -- that sort of goes without saying.actually, I meant exactly what I said, that some are offended (as repeatedly pointed out at any opportunity) and some are not... how you read that as implying anything I don't know.... for myself, no, I do not see the term as derogatory
Oh, I get that not everyone's upset... I just don't think he needs to take that into consideration. I mean, honestly, whether or not 90% of his customer base took it as an insult, he did use it exactly as it's meant to be used by every one of the PvPers who use it.That folks are upset about it I understand, I'm just saying that not everyone is upset.
What she said applies to every industry out there, but more so to game developers. Contract jobs, also, are not permanent and are often the first to go in the 4th quarter cuts that are made to make numbers look good for the year. The video game industry is small. Many folks go from one company to the next and keep friendships and relationships between them. Often time new companies are formed by a group that leaves an existing company. You really don't want to burn your bridges in the video game industry. What you just said doesn't apply to IT. The IT industry loaded with contract jobs. I wouldn't be worried about that if I lived in Metro DC. There are plenty of IT jobs in that area
Almost every company I have worked for in the past, especially IT, made me sign a NDA. Part of that NDA was a binding agreement that stated I would not talk about the internal workings of the company, nor, if laid off or fired, could I seek employment with a competitor for 5 years. The language in the NDA is very legal, very specific and very binding.Nonsense. How are you doing the community a favor by not speaking about what happened and why it happened? It only favors an employer who's motives and organizational issues have been questioned by the community. I'm actually addressing anyone who is friends with anyone who had a job at Mythic/EA and who lost said job. You do your friend no favors by talking about them getting laid off. I'm not talking about the community, I assume someone who is friends with someone who lost their job would want to do their best by them? This is just advice for those people. Of course the rest of the community is free to speculate/engage in outrage or frustration/etc.Nonsense. How are you doing the community a favor by not speaking about what happened and why it happened?

As for not seeing the term as derogatory, well, that might a bit of carriage before the horse then, because the original connotation of the term was definitely derogatory, much like the word "trammie." Yes, some people have owned it and decided not to be offended by it, but pretty much everyone knows it's meant in a derogatory fashion.
I mean, let's say for comparison that at a Star Trek convention, William Shatner got up and called his fans a bunch of losers, and told them to get a life. Much like he did as a joke on Saturday Night Live and got a lot of backlash from his fans.
There's just a certain sense of responsibility that someone in Cal's position has to, you know, not alienate himself from his playerbase. And no, I don't buy he didn't know what he meant. The interview video is available for perusal on the net.
Obviously his permanent job wasn't permanent , or they wouldn't have let him go.... Atleast with a contract companies generally abide by the duration of the contract and make a decision at the end of the contract. It also give the employee a chance to test the market around the end of the contract , if he wishes not to extend. What she said applies to every industry out there, but more so to game developers. Contract jobs, also, are not permanent and are often the first to go in the 4th quarter cuts that are made to make numbers look good for the year.
Who cares??? The application of C++ applies to more then just the game industry. It's about keeping a roof over your head , not working in one specific industry. Having said that , I would also do what I love to do and what pleases me. However in this economic climate, sometimes things like that I would forego for a short time. Generally a contract will allow you to do that for a year or so. Companies just aren't hiring employees right now and corp to corp or 1099 don't count as payroll....The video game industry is small. Many folks go from one company to the next and keep friendships and relationships between them. Often time new companies are formed by a group that leaves an existing company. You really don't want to burn your bridges in the video game industry.
Still has nothing to do with paying the bills.... I would be open to taking jobs in other areas to learn new technologies, hardware , software, and organizational issues such as network management. The main issues is paying the bills , not confining yourself into one area of IT. Software engineering means many things in and of itselfIT and Video Games while similar to an extent, are very different industries
LOL. If a company views you or anyone else as overqualified , that just means you need to find somewhere else to work.... The whole reason for extending contract jobs is to test the market for good employees. Alot of times a position can be created by a company if a person performs well. I would view it as an opportunity to head into a new industry and learn new things. Not to mention I've seen Draconi's linkedin page. IMHO I don't think the "overqualified" status really applies here. However, while the IT industry may have openings, guys like Draconi and others are often considered "overqualified" for the positions and won't get the job. I was overqualified at one time when I was unemployed and I wouldn't be hired for a help desk position because I was overqualified.
Yep , you gotta do what you gotta do to pay the bills. Times are hard. Sign whatever you have to sign to get the bills paid. We're in agreement that's the main thing you're referring to. I haven't had to sign one of those for over a decade even when I had government positions. So I'm not going to speak much about the language of a NDA....Almost every company I have worked for in the past, especially IT, made me sign a NDA. Part of that NDA was a binding agreement that stated I would not talk about the internal workings of the company, nor, if laid off or fired, could I seek employment with a competitor for 5 years. The language in the NDA is very legal, very specific and very binding.
I'd bet that EA has their employees sign something similar, which may or may not be dismissed according to agreements made down the road.
Hmm.BTW that goes out to anyone who is friends with Draconi or anyone else who lost their job. You are doing them no favors by talking about it (if you have personal information as to who lost their job or whatever). The best thing you can do is keep your mouth shut
Yeah that's what worries me.....And why I want to see some kind of chart of who remains. But hopefully some announcement will come soon about the direction of UO. Hopefully it's not this "wild Wild West" stuff
I think Draconi and possibly Wilki were victims of the layoff.A lot of people are jumping to some wild conclusions and making a lot of assumptions. Let's wait a while longer? I don't know, but I'm guessing the end of the month maybe.
btw, the 'Carl' who made such a poor impression is actually Calvin.
I get the impression of someone who's trying desperately to relate to a group, ie the UO Players, but missing because he doesn't know the 'language' and so uses it wrongly. He's at least trying, let's help him instead of blasting him?
I'm 90% sure he had no idea some people would be insulted to be referred to as 'carebears'. After all, the Carebears in the cartoons were good creatures who cared about others. Not a bad thing to be at all.
Just wanted to jump in here.I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
So I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play
And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire the most
The Father Son and Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music…
Died.
Wrong lyrics....
I met a necro who sang the blues
And I asked him for some happy news
But he just withered and turned away
So I went down to the britain shore
Where I’d heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play
And in the streets the PvPers screamed
The PVMers cried and the RPers dreamed
But not a word of power was spoken
The moongates all were broken
And the three peopl I admire the most
Chrissay Leurocian and Tim Draconi Cotton
They left our game but won't be forgotton
The day that UO…
Died.
Although I dont think UO is going to die anytime soon that was hilarious thanks!Wrong lyrics....

Wrong....Gaming industry != IT industry
There is no good reason to think that.I'm 90% sure he had no idea some people would be insulted to be referred to as 'carebears'. After all, the Carebears in the cartoons were good creatures who cared about others. Not a bad thing to be at all.
And here's the site it came from:We're going to have an announcement after this launch about another piece that will turn UO back into the Wild, Wild West that everyone wants. But before that, within the Stygian Abyss, there are areas that are Player vs. Player combat that, are, I'll just go ahead and say it, where the "Care Bears" have to travel.
it was a joke.. calm yourself...Problem is because someone doesn't like to pvp does not mean they are sissies or carebears it just means they don't like pvp kind of like how some people don't like pizza or tacos.
For goodness sake... why is everyone sooo bloomin' upset about that whole Carebear thing? It's the same connotation as being called a Trammie... Trammy... Trammi... (gosh I've seen it spelled so many ways)...
!
Really? REALLY? SERIOUSLY? Where have you been since the invention of the word "Trammie?" Clearly not on THESE boards. People have been up in arms about the term since it was first coined by the first person who used it as an insult to people who didn't like to play in Felucca.Exactly. People are now only getting offended by it because a developer used the term. Me thinks the same type of person that searches for a reason to rush off to talk to the HR department. Soooo now we are not able to mention race, religion, sex, or little fuzzy cartoon characters.
This.I don't think he ment it as an insult at all. Go to any MMO and ask what a carebear is and they know. Its just become a social norm to call people carebears instead of sissies..
It's not a bad thing... It is what it is..
Wow. Ignorance knows no bounds.Ahhhhh c'mon man .....
Draconi woulda never got fired if he could do more then write stories.
They actually pay this guy to go to other countries? !? !?!
To do what? Tell the other people how to script in a quest?
Draconi shoulda known his limits
A: You can't program
B: You can't make a good website
C: Every client you have been in charge of other then the OLD 2d client
was a complete FAIL
He should consider himself lucky that he squeezed as much time and money outa EA/Mythic as he did, that goes with the other useless scripters that got canned.
No, not "this." If you think, for some reason, that the alternative to the word "sissy" being "carebear" is an okay way to describe 90% of UO's playerbase, well, to be frank, tough. It's not. Not wanting to be ganked by gank squads does not make one a sissy. Understand that Trammel became a reality because there was an active group of players who got off on tormenting other players. It had nothing to do with an active challenge and everything to do with exertion of force.This.I don't think he ment it as an insult at all. Go to any MMO and ask what a carebear is and they know. Its just become a social norm to call people carebears instead of sissies..
It's not a bad thing... It is what it is..
No, it doesn't sound that way at all. If his plans are to make UO more active in the PvP area, fine, but there's no need to refer to 90% of his playerbase as, how did the other post put it, oh, that's right, sissies.Sometimes various memes are best described by their labels - good, bad, or ugly. It sounds like he was more trying to mitigate any potential negative connotation by calling attention to it before anyone took offense.
Not certain how you equate "mob behavior" to "someone being offended," but it's interesting, if fantastic and false, leap of logic.Unfortunately, mob behavior being what it is, inevitably someone is going to take offense at something. Thus, the griping forum activist posts are born.
No. The guy whose paycheck benefits from the 90% of the people he took a cheap shot at don't have to "get over it."P.S. Get over it.
Umm...SA was the largest and most successful expansion in UO history. SA was Draconi's brainchild, even back before he was lead designer. Learn to think before you speak.Ahhhhh c'mon man .....

Yup cause Al Lowe could program moderately well, but he relied heavily on others to make his "vision and design" happen. Somehow, strangely, every LSL title produced (by EA) after he was let go has bit the dust big time.Umm...SA was the largest and most successful expansion in UO history. Great lets be super specific because it's totally relevant to what I was talking about. I'm sure when someone loses their job in the radio industry, which is a subset of the entertainment industry, they'd be perfectly happy getting a job in newspapers. /sarcasmWrong....Gaming industry != IT industry
Software engineering is still IT
*edit*
The industry can be anything. All industries need IT folks from government to aerospace to health care.... Or any other industry for that matter
So I'll edit this to convey that point. It's the type of position that I would be concerned with , not the industry

Maybe you should try the enhanced client, instead of just assuming it doesn't work based on what you "heard"? Stability wise, it's a very nice improvement over KR. The only reason I log in the classic client is to stock my vendor, because I want them to look right for everyone, not just those of us using the EC.Who uses the SA client raise their hands...
None do, last I heard it was unplayable.....
I play on enhanced and it is very playable...so was KR and so was 3d as well. Maybe not many use it but that doesn't mean its unplayable. Don't comment on something you have no clue about.Who uses the SA client raise their hands...

If you can't get a 2d iso engine right and you are a lead designer for a company of EA there is no doubt your getting fired.
I play around in many programming languages, I have mess'd around with PLENTY of 2d engines and I honestly have to tell you this guy musta wasted SOOOOOO much money on SA..
Who spends YEARS putting something like that together? I know kids who can clone that client & server in a month.
Meanwhile he's taking vacations and sending his team to japan for tea...
You really think EA has that much money to be wasting on a game like UO?
*Raises hand too* Same here. I've used SA exclusively for a long time now. I still keep 2D on the back-up computer so I can load it to remind me how 2D works when friends and allies have questions on it.I think SA is awesome and don't even have classic on my main comp. *raises hand*![]()
