I guess that there is a cheat for the Jared quest now. I watched a player farm essence constantly for over 20 minutes without a break. This is the part of UO that really sucks. the ones that cheat really ruin it.

Yeah, it's a hack. It's called "gather 16 residue before starting the essence farming". =P
I wondered if I were missing something. I've only done the quest a little bit, but.
The residue has a long life. Collect residue, turn one batch into essence - harvest souls. When it runs out, turn the next batch into essence. No cheating required, just making best use of the varying timer lengths.

Yeah the hack is to use some information a player posted here that said collect all the piles to transform you first and then you can spend an hour collecting the red orbs.

Another tip is to farm the stuff at champ spawns in Ilsh, add a UOA macro for the moongrass and you can collect a lot of the residue really fast. I'll probably regret this info because I'll have more competition, I'm surprised I see so few other players doing this.

You are doing the right thing. Don't worry about competition, sharing is good. That's part of what being a community is about. If everyone hoarded info, there'll be no stratics, uoguide, or all the useful guides stickied in the forums. (psst, besides, someone has already shared this info, see link below)

I usually collect enough to do about 4 runs through. I assumed this was legal as each time I used the grass I would get about 6 or more residue. Finally decided to just keep going till had an even amount to go through the quest. usually takes me about 3 moongrass grabs.
Am I understanding that this is ok to do? Or is the OP correct and the system was not designed to run this way and I am inadvertently using an exploit? I would like to know as I am always very conscious of these things and try never to act inappropriately with rules... declared or otherwise.

I would say that your are using the system exactly as it was designed. I usually grab or so residue to make the essence for or more runs. THis is about all i can handle before getting bored, and allows me to collect a decent amount of crytals even with the competition.

That 20 minutes you were watching this player, you could have farmed over 16 residue yourself.
In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with collecting more than 4 corporeal essences and using them in a row. They have a set timer that allows you to hang onto them for a little bit. This is how the system was engineered and there is no problem finding efficiency in the system as it was designed.
I usually collect 4 residue and then make the run. This is more a factor of my trackball. After 3 or so runs, my wrist starts to hurt, so I like a short break after every 10 mins of sparklie searching. I occasionally walk away with 5 or 6 residue usually because I kill monsters in groups and then go back and leech, spirit speak, and re-leech them. Sometimes I get a few extra residue using that method. I figure any extra residue are a bonus for the next run.

This is what i have been doing allso (uoassist macro for the grass), and i collect around 16 to 20 essence and just chain the collection of the souils the essence last around 3 hours.
I also use a UOassist macro to heal the gypsy too making the turn in much faster.

There *was* an exploit that let you extend the life of your transformation an extra 10 minutes. I found out about it accidentally (as these things often happen) about two weeks ago and promptly reported it. I was surprised to see that they fixed it within a few days. (No, I was not exploiting it. I was just curious if it was ever fixed. If I wanted to exploit it, I wouldn't have bothered reporting it, heh.)
I would post what it was, but I don't know what the status of posting such things on the boards is, fixed or not. Also, I wouldn't want the same exploit to pop up if they want to use the same concept at a later date and they forget to patch it.
Of course, posting it might make it harder to forget to fix it in the future.

what ruins the game is the ones that think everyone is cheating because they cant figure out things on their own.
you have no idea how many times i get accused of scripting and cheating.. just because i dont want to stop and talk.
the other day some nice people decided it was fun to see if they could get me killed mining. so they lured down some monsters and invised.. just because i didnt say hi to them and ignored them.
I get paged on at least once a month, i am the same as you, i dont feel the need to talk to people while mining. I mine in fel and get killed quite a bit and still dont talk to them i just run off to get a res and start mining again.
I kill Liches. I seem to get more Essances from them.
As for the red sparkles, there are certain areas that seem to spawn more than others. Around/inside the Mage towers in shame, the Rotting Corpse cells (in Despise I think that is) and the cave where Sudiva is.
There are times where I can recall once, walk the path, collect my 5, get back, collect my shard, recall back the the same spot, do over and enough will spawn, rinse/repeat.

When I was doing it I pretty much just cycled thru getting as many of the essences as I could using 3 or 4 pieces of Moongrass.. each time putting the essences into different piles.... Used the oldest first to the youngest but I never had a problem running out with my time before the things poofed...
I always was able to use them all up.... any left over when I was done sometime sent me into round 2... but that's ok.

Same here. I think I once had 17 Essences one time and was able to use 16 of them before the 17th one poofed. Or perhaps it was 13 and used 12 of them? But anyways, it's certainly not a hack, or I'm (rather) certain it would have been fixed so that you couldn't hold more than 4 Essences at once.
Honestly, I found gathering the sparklies more boring than slaughtering critters, so I normally stopped after I got 8 Essences and then gathered sparklies. Not that I got a lot of time to play at any one sitting anyways, but I'm certain if I continued with this event and had more gaming time, I'd want to break up the Pac-Man minigame with some good, 1998-style slaughter of critters.

whatever it is i cant wait for it to stop. the cavern of the discarded is spilling over with essence boxes every morning. CoD is my major resource for blackrock these days.

I usually get 12-16 per Grass. Champ spawns for the win people. Necro/wither. Its amazing how I rarely see others doing this.

I still can't seem to find my way to the cavern of the discarded. Keep hoping someone will post a map with the rought marked, but no such luck. Getting very tired of getting very dead trying to find it.

I gather 8 of the essences. I have to run to Despise or Covetous because I dont gate and there is no recalling on Siege. Then run to the hag and do it all over again. Sometimes I can get 2 crystals if I am lucky off of one of the essences thingys. Gathering more to start is much eaiser than going back to the cemetary and getting more. I even stop to check the bodies to see if there are any goodies and sometimes stop to pick up a Jack o Lantern.
hmm, On Siege, being on foot, I think I would go to Shame and use Yew graveyard as being the nearest to the hag. Does Sanctuary work too?
that one is easy, go through the tomb of kings, then head down past the lava lizards and over the 2nd bridge. (the first bridge takes you to the sa dragon) then go around the demon spawn, those are the imps and monbats. keep up by the lava river.. you will then see a green patch of grass, its square, head down around the mountain and its right there.
