Looking for a fun and effective warrior template

Ok, I'm back to the game after a 3-4 year break, and I need to "update" my warrior(s).

I see that "Sampires" are all the rage - but - I tend to prefer non "flavor of the month" type characters, even though I know they're usually FOTM for a reason.

I'm looking for something that can solo pretty big game. I don't have access to a gigantic amount of cash (read: a few million tops, heh), so I need advice on stuff I can gear with that doesn't require a ton of cash (then of course, I can improve that later as I kill stuff). I prefer melee for my warriors, though I suppose I can look at archers too.

There's some VERY, very creative template-designers out there nowadays I see: help me out here guys! I'll try anything.

Just as a follow-up, I'd probably prefer a more "pure" warrior type. So probably no necro/warrior hybrids or the like. Unless it's really cool/different/etc.

Heh. Template wizards: guide me!

If you're looking for something that can solo high end monsters, you won't be able to stick with a "pure" warrior type. You can have one or the other, but not both. Of course, that would depend on what you'd consider to be a high end monster.

Heh, well, as I'd said, I'm back after a loooooong time, so big to me is still Balrons - LOL!

Throw some ideas at me: you're one of the uber-template-wizards - I'm curious to see what you recommend. ;)

Not really a lot to throw at you man.. you said you didn't want to have magic, just a straight warrior.

There really isn't a whole lot to tell you if thats what you want. You know, weap/tact/anat/heal/parry/resist.

Eh, well: throw some ideas at me! I'm open to stuff, just don't want to do the FOTM Sampire thing is all I guess. ;)

just do a straight-up samurai, or a paladin. either one can be just as effective as a sampire, but requires a lot more caution, and will offer a challenge. the sampire is just more efficient and easy.

one interesting warrior template i've made was a spellchanneling warrior. basically a warrior build, but using magery/mage weapons instead of a weapon skill. effective up to certain doom champs and peerless.

sampire might have been flovor of the month 2-3 years ago,it's pretty basic now as are most of the bush baby templets.

try out a plain bush/chiv dexer and see how you like it

My favorite warrior is 115 swords, 115 bushido, 110 tactics, 115 Parry (with +15 parry ring), 105 anatomy, 100 healing, 75 chivalry.

Sure, it could be optimized for the extra point or two of damage, but I haven't cared too much. He's great to play with in a group and has outstanding defensive capabilities.

A straight-up paladin would look something like:

120: weapon
100: tactics, anatomy, healing
100: chivalry, focus

That leaves 100 points for resist, parry, or legendary status on other than your weapon skill.

A samurai would looks something like:

120: weapon, parry, bushido
120: chivalry, focus, resist

If you're content to travel loading recall scrolls into your runebooks, you could trade the chivalry and focus for healing and anatomy. You'd need some items with mana and stamina regen though. Lower mana cost would be useful as well.

A PvM pally doesn't need 100 Chiv.

120 Wep Skill
120 Parry
100 Tactics
100 Anatomy
100 Healing
100 Med
80 Chiv

Gear/weapon/etc advice? :)

(And of course, tactics - I really am that n00b all over again. It's been a long, long time.)

All 70's suit, DCI, HCI, DI, LMC. Needs to be medable. Weps with ML & SL. HLA helps too. M&S glasses for the HLD. Crimson Cincture. Pretty much all of the basic arties and basic warrior gear.

Tactics-

Jousting

Heh, a lot of that may as well be Chinese/Greek.

Remember, I've been gone a loooooooooooooooooooooooong time. "Vanq" was still cool when last I played. :D

And jousting? Heh, that I know, but, I'm looking for something that can go toe-to-toe! :D

Then you need to go the Sampire route. A solo pally will need to joust to take down high end creatures. Balrons are not on that list unless they're of the paragon variety.

HCI- Hit Chance Increase
DCI- Defense Chance Increase
DI- Damage Increase
LMC- Lower Mana Cost
HLA- Hit Lower Attack
HLD- Hit Lower Defense

So what CAN a solo pally beat up? :D Heh.

Maybe I just go Sampire eventually anyway, but for now... Pally sounds more fun.

They can beat up quite a lot, but you're never going to be able to go toe to toe without constantly running to heal against anything high end. By jousting you can take down quite a bit, it just takes a lot longer, and you have to have room to run.

I can live with that.

What's a good weapon type to focus on these days?

I like swords myself, but any of them have their good points. Fencing has leafblades. Macing has the diamond mace and black staff. Swords has Twinkling Scimitar, rune blades, and ornate axes. It all depends on how much you want to invest in your weps.

Well I'm very very poor at the moment, but I gotta say, I like swords a lot. ;) So... heh.

Shields, obviously? Since the template has parry?

Yep, with no bushido you have to have a shield. If you have an old one with HCI on it don't get rid of it. They don't spawn in game anymore.

Hmm, and I might. I have a boatload of hoarded shields sitting in a crate somewhere. :D

Heh.

Thanks for the help, Connor, I appreciate it. It's weird being a n00b to a game you used to be on top of, LOL.

What's the best way to work stats these days?

(And for that matter, skills? Though, I usually work those "naturally")

If you want an interesting template, you're going to have be be a hybrid warrior.
There really isnt variety in pure fighter types. Think up something interesting...
Mystic or mage archer tossing up meat shields to distract while hammering them with arrows.
Maybe a necro/weaver fighter? I hear WoD is pretty nice even though i've never used it. Could have a miniature army of nature's fury (+corpse skin maybe?) and reanimates to distract while pummeling the creature, with WW or Wither for large groups.

But for purist fighters? What is there? Bash the monster til it's dead, repeat.

I have some fun with my pure bushido char
120 bushido
120 parry
120 weap
120 tactics
120 anatomy
120 healing (used both fencing an swords) [I still like the dex fencer stuff of years back]

In PvM u'd get paralyzed alot and I personally haven't used the magic arrow scroll o yourself or something like that to break the paralysis

But anyway for a pure warrior , you'd need to invest heavily in weapons and armor.
Some of the hybrid templates take away some of the item needs such as consecrate weapon and divine fury. Vampr form regens mana and stamina faster then normal and life leeches. Definitly some benefits of hybrid templates. With a pure tempaltes, you'd need equipment that does alot more leeching and regen IMHO. That could be the difference in looting and being looted... I would also suggest 5 mod rings with high hit chance , defence chance and (damage increase or lower mana cost)

The necro/weaver fighter template has some merit. I have one and it does work ok if you animate dead and/or nature's fury. Then strangle + corpse skin him. Work him down with your weapon. WOD to finish. For hard mobs that does work. You'd need 40 lower mana cost and I'd run with ma dci as well. But getting max SDI so WOD works well is an issue

Here's one no one is using. Try it out on test shard.

120 weap-melée
90 heal
100 anat
100 tactics
100 bushido
80 parry
90 ninjit
60 chiv

You need 20 points of skill, 10 each on ring and brace, but with imbueing that's relatively easy. I'm gonna test it out when I get home. You said your newish to the game, so I'd imagine 120 scrolls may be hard to come by.

No, I said I'm back from a very long break. :D I FEEL new again, since so much has changed, but I'm a Day 1 era player. :D

I can get 120 scrolls.

Question is, what's the best way to set stats these days? See-saw still work, for instance?

See Saw still works.Best used for high initial gains,i used it with lumberjacking and mining. For small adjustments just set arrows up and down and go hunt something. Does not take long and works without skill gains.
A good starting template would be a standard samurai with healing and chivalry.Do not go elf or gargoyle.Learn to play him to the max including all the consumables, specials and the right macros.Depending on gear and power scrolls, you will be able to take out balrons more or less easy.
Then add 40 necro to the template, perhaps by lowering anat. This gives you the ability to curse weapon for 50% guaranted life leech.Lasts for around 6 secs because of the human 20 spirit speak.Makes the critters who gave you problems before a walk in the park.
A good training ground these days is the abyss.A lot of different enemies to choose from.Do the mini champ spawns there and sell the essences you find at reasonable prices, giving you a stable income.

Oh and if you go the bushido/parry route, get an exceptional armored swamp dragon to ride. Will reduce the damage you take from physical attacks by 20%.

i made a template just the other day that ive been doing really well in pvm and pvp with and its the funnest template ive played in awhile
120 bushido
120 parry
120 swords
100 archery (hunters headress to 120)
100 tactics
80 meditation
67 chivalry
my biggest problem was always that sometimes i needed a ranged attack but i didnt want to be hit alot either so now with the parry and bush i can use evasion and switch to archery as i please, the med is because 4/6 chiv confidence and pots are my healing source but in pvm life leech works great even if your not a sampire so sometimes i dont even need to heal, this template has opened alot of options for me because now i dont need to switch characters for enemies that require a ranged attack i can just do it all with this character, you said you were looking for different types of templates this is pretty much just a variation of a fencer archer but with bush parry

Purchase a swampie from a tamer. There is no taming/lore requirement to own or bond the spawmpie.

Exceptional dragon barding deeds are made by player smiths. All exceptional dragon barding armor is made equal, regardless of ingot color.

Just out of curiosity ( I am somewhat intrigued by this build ) did you test, and what did you find?
