Do they pop up in patches as Jack 'o lanterns or do you have to pick up normal pumpkins?

How do you get the Jack 'O Lanterns?

They spawn in fields. You need to clear out pumpkins so more can spawn. There is a small chance it will be a carved pumpkin.

You don't need to clear them out, you are NOT resetting the pumpkin patch or anything like that at all. Each one has a small chance to respawn as a Jack O' Lantern, so the more you remove to respawn the better your chance of seeing one.
