Besides that, it would just keep plugging along as usual. The profit margin of UO is high, mainly because it costs very little to keep it running.

If Microsoft buys EA, hmmmm... I think that the quality of EA Products will go up. However I don't think that UO would be around much longer or a part of Microsoft. At least not on the Traditional platform. I can see it ported over to the XBOX 360, but that would be hard to do without requiring a keyboard. But I see that might not be a bad thing. There would be voice communications built in, and almost unlimited resources to fixing bugs.
I think scripting would become a thing of the past. Microsoft would build it with their dev tools, and one thing that Microsoft has gotten everyone beat on is money to put towards development of games and security.

Whoa is this just a what if or is this something that could possibly happen? If this happens I doubt very seriously UO will still be around.
Yeah, and a track record on their security actually working that seems to go into negative numbers when that shouldn't even be possible.

This actually leads to a very interesting misconception... that security elsewhere is stronger.
Much like the Macintosh propaganda that they never get viruses (which leaves one to wonder why they have antivirus software), the true issue is that with Microsoft, people tend to try to poke holes in their stuff simply because they are the big kid on the block.
It's not that every other system on the planet is that much better programmed (unless, of course, it's military/government grade, and even then, history is replete with back doors), it's that people who want to make a bang don't go after little firecrackers.
Microsoft is what it is. Sure, we can debate the finer point of whatever finer point people would like to debate, but the fact is that modern computing would be much different without Microsoft. Maybe Mac would have become dominant, but then, ask yourself if Apple would have been so innovative without the push of Microsoft's influence. Given that they had to go running back to Steve Jobs, and that Apple's best stuff has come out since his return, I question what shape Apple would have been without Microsoft's influence in the industry.
And yes, perhaps something else would have cropped up... Point is, we have what we have today largely because of what goes on in the computer industry, and Microsoft is one of the strongest players in the field.

Seems unlikely, but if it were true, it could hardly make EA any worse than they already are. Pretty much everything worth playing that EA's "put out" was in fact originally a title from some studio or other that they bought out, absorbed amoeba-fashion, and then (often) subsequently flatlined. I'm no fan of MS, but they have developed a game or three that was actually worth playing, all by themselves, and that's a game or three more than EA has.

I love UO and don't want it to ever end, although I'm sure it will one day. I hope that day is long away. Not sure where I read it ...it was before work and I start work at 6am...

I think UO would either be scrapped or they would give more attention to UO. At least more than whatever attention EA gives to it...if any.
I hope they would try to do more for UO though.

No offense, but this is a month old rumor. Just google "Microsoft denies buying EA" and you will get the official response.
The main reason given for Microsoft not buying EA is that it would literally kill EA's power as a game producer by casting doubt on EA's neutral platform viability. In other words, EA would still have to publish titles for PS3 and game systems that directly compete against the Xbox. Not going to happen.

Microsoft has said they don't plan on buying EA however Disney said they would consider it....
Microsoft would only buy EA for their xbox games. All they have to do is give the word and they could gobble EA up like it was nothing at all...

The article you read must have been an old one, because the last time this issue came up a few weeks ago, Microsoft made an official statement saying the rumors were false.
