I'd love an in-game email system, something that functions better than the bulletin boards (waits for someone to suggest that).

The world chat... only if I can turn it off... permanently.

How would you be tracked down? I just want a mailing system. You know to send stuffs. Not to track your location zap to you and say..heeeey, suup! lol.

Of course world chat would be checkable. I don't see it taking away from UO, if it was able to be turned off. Also, mailing could be different. UO use to have little mail letters on our Paper Dolls waay back in the day and we were suppose to beable to give those out. What every happened to that? Anyone old UO'ers know?

Both are good ideas. The mail system could be part of the auction system that should also be added in.

You don't get any traction with these kind of requests because too many WoW haters think it might somehow take away from the coolness they have for playing a 12 year old game that doesn't have such frivolous things in it.

There definitely needs to be a global chat. It just needs to be turned off for all active accounts but should be default for all new ones. This give people who expect(rightly so) an online game to have such a mechanism while making sure the granpas who play it don't complain because too many words confuse them.

Hey hey at 21 I doubt I am a Grandpa.... I just didn't like World chat in WoW. I have no problem with its addition, just as long as I can turn it on and off when I wish. Also little mailboxes at your house would be really cool, you can use it to send messages to other players houses. That'd be epic lol

I would freeking LOVE world chat. It most certainly would be abused by spammers but they are easily overcome with the ignore feature. More chat options would go a loong way in bringing together the scattered UO community.

Mail would be good too.

You are right on! I mean, it just makes sense. It would in no way create a WoW atmosphere. It's a much needed system. There are those that still have their long time friends here and guildmates. There are MANY of us who don't and for those of us who don't have to just find things to solo, which gets quite boring.

Yeah the UO community seems very scattered now. A mail system and general chat channels like world or Trade would bring people back together. Keeping the purity of the game at this stage means condemning it to death. Something needs to be done to save our game.

Glad you agree, the problem is that most Uo'ers are in their homes. It would be nice while you are sitting in your home working on armor and whatever it is you do. To turn on world chat and see what is going on in the world. I think it would bring a good feeling of community back. Alot of us aren't bank sitters. I am more of a house sitter, lol.

Ummmm....no thanks, Elaysia. I hate to admit it, but I played The Sims Online before I played UO. One of the things I loved about UO when I first started playing was the lovely lack of chatter. In comparison to UO, TSO was nothing more than a glorified chat room.

I remember when guild chat was introduced about six months after I started playing and how much I abhorred it. Couldn't ever get the color for it right and would end up having to stop fighting something and squint at the screen only to find out that the guild chat text that had gone flying by a moment before was merely a guildmate blowing off steam from her long day at work or ranting about a relative's or her boyfriend's shortcomings.

It's pretty much the same thing now when I drop in at a (somewhat) busy bank. I don't care to sit in the middle of a gaggle of gossipers, nor do I enjoy reading the same garbage I could listen to if I but turned on the TV to listen to daytime talk shows.

I've got absolutely no interest in a global chat system and even less interest in an in-game mail system. Bulletin boards and books are fine by me. If one fills up and I don't want to clear it, I just put out a new one. Zero maintenance....just the way I like it. No need to worry about clearing out messages I might have wanted to save. No warnings that my mailbox is going to explode. Access is at my pleasure (i.e., if I don't want you in my house I sure don't want your messages either). What's not to like?

You actually sound like you should be playing an offline game. The whole point of playing a game like uo, which is essentially a chat room with an attached game, is to play with and chat with other people. Thus adding to that quality is a good thing. Also if you don;t like games that evolve over time then again offline games are going to be better for you. This is not an insult as I play offline games too. Nothing wrong with it.

Hi Tina,

I understand what you are saying. I have played Ultima for would have been over 8 years, but 8 years at the moment. I took a 2 year break...so would have been 10 years. I have been around long enough to know that most UO'ers are hardcore about their quiet time. I have to say though, given a choice to turn it off wouldn't be acceptable to you? As far as the mail system, could it also be checked to say I don't wish to receive mail? If those things were in place would you then consider it?

Yes. It exists in 2D since The Second Age. It used to have a button on the Paperdoll to open. The Guild menu replaced it because so few people used it. You can still open it through a macro or with the menu bar.

I chat with people a bit while I play. I just prefer to not have a steady stream of it flowing past the entire time while I play. And trust me when I say that the main reason I play UO is NOT to sit and chat with other people. I have my moments when I get chatty, but my number #1 reason to play UO is for the challenge. If I wanted to chat nonstop and play a game on the side, I'd just get on Facebook or go play Pogo or something.

And the public bulletin boards have been broke since before I started playing UO with the AOS launch. The private ones are useless if a person doesn't have a fixed location (say, no house, such as for multi-shard players). Even giving the private ones the ability to tell a player, when they log in, that someone has posted on it since they last read it, would be an improvement over the current system - but a mail system would be even better.

I'm not so hot with the global chat idea, though having a "Friend" chat channel (fix the friend code from KR, and have a channel that allows communications with your selected friends that have also friended you) might be a better one.

I would definitely have them turned off, and I suspect the majority of other players would as well. If that were the case, then would it still be worthwhile to have either system in the game, if they aren't being used by all? Would people continuing using a mail system if they found out that most people they want to send mail to never look at their mail? And how attractive would a chat system be to use to find someone to do something with if you know half the players are oblivious to it? I just don't see how systems like this can ever be considered "successful" unless there is no way to opt out of them.

Yeah, this is why I will probably leave UO again. I just cannot find people to do stuff. I need that ability to call on people to help. I was doing the silly little spiritual champ tonight me and another girl. We got Oak to spawn, but could not get any help. We had to stop what we were doing run to Luna ask for help. No one there of course, but a few people and then quit. I wasted my entire night on that sillyness. If only I had a world chat system. I could have easily asked for help. :/

A feature of a player town concept:

A player town will get a special messaging feature, the Town News. The Mayor and Lieges can write town news, which are short messages limited to 250 characters. These messages will be displayed immediately to every town member who is online, and will be displayed to offline town members as soon as they log in. Such messages will expire after 5 days (so people who were offline for a longer time don't get flooded with messages). This Town News system is an excellent way to announce events and spread news to the townsmen.

YES! After returning from 3 years of WoW I really miss these features...
I do however see a problem with the ingame mailing system, since character names are not unique. In wow 2 chars cant have the same name, thus making it easier to create both mail and whisper/chat systems with friend lists.

If someone can come up with a solution to this... well.. give them alot of money.. or something :)

(Sorry if this has been posted before in this thread... havnt read all the posts before I made this reply :) )

World chat has existed since The Second Age and still does. People were just not interested in using it. Open the chat menu.
Situation:
Player A wants to give Player B an item.
Player B is offline.

Solution:
Player A goes to the bank and sends an ingame mail with the item to Player B.
Player A notifies Player B about that mail in ICQ/MSN/whatever.
Player B comes back online and grabs item at the mailbox near the bank (or how about at a new post office in towns?)

Balancing:
Mails will cost ingame gold depending at the weight of the mail.
Players can deny (turn off) accepting mails.
Mails not received within a week by players will be sent back to the sender. After 7 more days they get deleted. (Keeps the server-backups small)
Notifying about new mails can be included by a new house-add-on mailbox bound to the characters mailbox which placed it, with a signal flag indicating new mails.

Being someone who has played MMO's with an ingame mail system, I can say with experience that unless you can deal with the 100+ spam messages from gold sellers and whatnot, its not even worth using. And as for a global chat channel, same thing. You would get so many spammers selling stuff that you would turn it off, and what good is it then?

Yeah, then just include mailboxes for players as house add-on and then everyone can decide self to use it period.

Well, you have good points here. Though, the easy solution to this would be different channels of course as you have now, ie: filters. Choose to add it to your chat box or not.

The two most important ones we need is trade and just general chat.
