I know you can use Tokuno dyes for artifacts. How do you use them? Do you need a dye tub? Also, what are natural dyes for?

Double click the dye, get a target cursor. Click the item in your inventory that you wish to dye and it will turn that color. If the bottle only has 1 use, after you use that 1 use the bottle will disappear.
No dye tub is needed.

Natural dyes, from what I have heard, can be used to dye anything except furniture. You do not need a dye tub for these either.

uoguide.com is your friend :)

double click a bottle of tokuno dye and when the targetting cursor comes up, click on the item you wish to dye. same with the natural dyes. no dye tub required.

natural dyes rock - you can dye almost anything with them including jewelry, artifacts, metal armor, previously undyable armor like the Sorcerer's Suit (SCORE!), spellbooks, runebooks, etc.

You can dye furniture with natural dye if they are made with special woods

Tokuno dyes ONLY dye artifacts or items crafted using colored woods, colored ingots, or colored leather (don't have SA yet so maybe colored granite also fits this category).

Stains dye ALMOST anything EXCEPT: (so far I have found these)

Snake skin boots

Bear/Deer masks that drop as monster loot

Looted talismen that not are artifact quality

One thing I just learned is that Black Natural Dye is a lighter shade of black similar to Tokuno Shadow Dancer Black. It's not the dark black of black dye tubs. The difference to me is the Toke black doesn't work on regular spell books because they are not artifact level, but the black stain does.

Price wise both stains and Tokuno dyes sell for about 100k gp per use.

Beware buying Plain Natural Dye which appears whitish to the eye but I am guessing, acts like 'bleach' and will dye an item it's 'default' color, which is generally regular leather tan, iron ingot gray, or plain board tan. Honest stain sellers sell the Natural Plain Stain for about 100k per 5 uses, so it should be priced much cheaper than the 'colored' stains.

With SA expansion, proper skills and ingredients you can make stains, you can't make Tokuno dyes.

Hopefully the Devs will fix those things in my list soon to work with stains.

I wish they'd consider making the non-dyable AOS clothing dyable with stains since some of those came in some ugly shades of dark orange and green that could use a dye over. AOS clothing/footwear is blessed and named for the character that chose the style and color of it during the AOS expansion.

Actually, that's not quite correct. I haven't tried the plain dye on everything, but it doesn't dye things a default color. It looks really awesome on a spellbook... a sort of light grey.

If you'd like to know more about the stains, try the Botany and Nutrition forum. All your questions about natural dye can be answered there. :)

Nice! I will go pay the 100k for some Plain Natural Dye and give that a try.

Thanks!

I didn't want to waste 100k to test Plain if it does the same as bleach when I have bleach already free from quests.

Edit: You are correct I tested on a Runebook and it's a nice shade of silvery gray now. Oh I think I know why it sells for so much less than the other dyes, the plain plants used to make it are far more abundant than colored plants needed for the colored dyes.

Awesome, thanks again! I had not even thought of trying to stain runebooks before your reply.

Yeah, I now have completely color-coded all my characters' runebooks. It's awesome. :) 100k? Damn, that's a lot. I'm selling my plains for 25k. LOL. Maybe I should jack up my prices.

Does the color the Sorcerer's set is stained actually show up when the suit is equipped? That was a problem with sets early on in that they could be dyed, but the dyed color didn't show when the suit was worn, just the default suit color.

i have dyed my sorcerer suits with both the dark blue and the black natural dye and they maintain the new stained colors while fully equipped. double score!

The natural black dye will not work on my Conjurer's Trinket. Major bummer.

That's got nothing to do with it, I assure you. Anyone growing plants for a living has an abundance of any color seed they need, plain or otherwise.

The reason that it sells for less on those vendors that sell it for less is for the same reason that you didn't want to try it out in the first place: People presume it's a bleach, not a color. So for most of us selling the dyes, the plain ones just sit around. I have patience, and let them sit... they eventually sell. Others are probably trying to move some of their stock. hehe

My price scheme:

- Plain, Normal, Bright: 50k
- White, Black, Ice, Dark, Magenta, Pink, Aqua, Metal, Off White: 400k
- Ice Black, Fire Red: 500k

I figure the rare colors are, indeed, rarer... I actually suspect these prices will raise (for myself and others) as the back-stock of rarer colored plants disappears. For instance, I'm already out of black, and facing doing the naturalist quest more than I really want to. hehe

That might just be a bug... I'd report it just in case.
agreed... hopefully it's just a bug. normal tok dyes won't work on the conjuror's grimoire, but the natural dyes do. so hopefully they will work on the trinket at some point! i am just about as tired of that conjuror dark red as i am of sorcerer suit blue.
