Cant get UO to load now

I have a friend that just re-installed UO from the 9th anny cd. Then he patched it for SA and now it wont work. He is running windows xp. He gets to the 2nd screen with the patch notes and then hits ok and then everything goes blank, nothing. He tryed with and without UO Assist and also turned his virus protection off.
Any ideas?

It'll be slow, but I'd suggest removing what they have installed so far and trying a clean install from the SA client download http://www.uoherald.com/trial/ - won't need to use 'free account code' if he already has an active UO account, obviously...

Hate to say it but have him reinstall it again. Uninstall the one on there now, run a clean up utility (I use Glary's) to clean up alll the leftover .dll files then reinstall. I have spoken to 3 or 4 people who have had to do this & then it worked fine, but most had the Enhanced Classic still loaded on their computer too. This process worked for them, hopefully it'll work for your buddy. Also make sure all the drivers are up to date & working. I know no sound card blows UO up every time you start it if one isn't detected. GL
(Have UO on 3 with XP & no problems so far, even the 2 with Vista have been good *knocks on wood desk for luck*)

ps: the ones that reinstalled from prev disks were using the 8th age Disks & went smooth.

Ok it might be the soundcard. He just did a clean windows install and didt install the soundcard yet, so he is doing that. Will see what happens after that.

So, tell me why I should upgrade to XP if, even with XP there are so many problems running UO???

Before that, I went through 3 expansions at least and you could buy them or not but the client worked well.
Now, since KR we encounter problems with the clients...(all of them, at one time or another...).
And then I think things are much worse than before. (why, but why) did they feel the need to make a new 2D client??????????????? Wasn't it enough to make the new enhanced client?????????????????

Also : some ppl could have bought the expansion because it says it would run with win98 also and what if they find afterwards that they can't anymore load UO????????????

Now, that's what I think : they should have kept the Legacy client as it was and advise ppl that the expansion would be new client only ; that way, everybody would have been satisfied & have a real choice.

It isn't a new 2d client, it is just patched to allow us to play the new content. Why did they do that? Because a majority of players demanded it. My older Win98 machines can't run UO anymore, but there was a thread at UOForums.com offered some suggestions on how to possibly get it to work. I haven't tried it yet, but I will eventually.

All my puters have XP on it and run UO fine. This person I was talking about originally had Vista on the puter, and he just installed XP. XP cannot find the sound card so he is putting vista back on it. Its not a problem with XP and UO it was a user error prolly. hehe

Just a side note, he may want to see if he can download the Windows 7 RC or later. If he can then he may want to consider using that vs the Vista. It will be good to June 10, 2010.

He can then upgrade from Vista to Windows 7.

All the evidence I have seen is that Windows 7 will most certainly run his system better than Vista does.
