Do pets still sell nowadays ??

I am asking, because I tamed a quite good Cu-Sidhe (regular color) with several stats all maxed out and some 90% or more.

It scored a 4 stars on the pet calculator.

Yet, I have been trying to sell it for a while but not even had anyone asking for it.

Time back players would have jumped on such a good CU but now no interest ?

Pets no longer sell not even if they are very good ?

They sell on Great Lakes all the time. That being said CFC is having a pet auction 09/19/2009 at 7pm CST for those that didn't know.

Well popps to be quite honest, at this point most people probably have tamed a better Cu. Between bonding and Greater dragons (sorry I pretty much have ruined any market on Catskills for greaters).

Seeing as its a plain colored CU your selling and if I miss my guess, untrained. I dont think your going to find a buyer for the one you have.
Not that its a bad CU. Just most people are looking to upgrade from their current or are looking for a certain color.

There seems to be a thread around here, recent, along the same line.

Same thing I said there.

If it isn't a Novelty Color Pet

OR an Upgrade Greater Dragon

OR a Dread Mare

In my opinion, there wont be much if any market for it.

Best way to sell pets...

Make bunch of books with pet stats & price and drop them around the bank and stables.

He he, on my shard the Janitors come out and sweep the books up as fast as you can fill them out.

Unfortunately, it seems if it's not a dread mare, exceptional greater dragon, rare color cu with great stats, or other rare pet, they just don't sell well.

If you can find a new tamer or player you can sometimes sell lesser pets, but not very often. I can't even seem to have any luck selling colored cu sidhe unless they rate over a 4.0

I wish they would extend the zoo turn in to accept more creatures.

The colour is going to be an issue with many players. Personally I'm happy with my plain pup, but after this much time in game players can be picky on stats and colour and find available pets that meet their standards. Sometimes you'll find the buyer quickly and other times you shift the pet to a second tamer and hunt with it till it sells or becomes part of your tamer's menagerie.

A rating of 4 doesn't necessarily mean the pet will be a hit either. Some players won't look beyond that rating system, while many others are still going to look at exactly what that pup has before they purchase. So a 4 rating can be good on the face of it, but your pet could still be let down in some areas.

And the obvious thing - price and advertising. I've sold pets through the trade forums more recently. My usual "tactic" is to have a price in mind and then simply ask for offers, rather than set a price. I don't solely trade for the gold, so sometimes I'll sell a decent pet at a low price if I feel it'll sit in the stables otherwise, and the next time I get offered more than I would ever ask for something I'd consider borderline. Usually those are the pretty coloured pups. I think book dropping could be a real turn off for some players, just like standing at the bank yelling about how good the pet is, so I don't use those methods myself. Forums have worked well for me though.

So, I'd say look at the stats closely, decide whether a big price is more important than getting the stable space free to tame and sell another pet and price accordingly. You may do everything right and still not sell, that's just how it is.

On Atlantic, I sell black/white/red cus (untrained) for around 3 mil each. Regular colors - even good ones - don't sell well.

One of my last pet sales last year before I quit was the best rune beetle I'd ever tamed, fully trained. I sold it for 20 mil. And before anyone cries foul, it was the product of over a year's worth of hard farming, and it really was something special. :)

I never sell pets (i give them away), but i have been tempted a couple of times to sell some. And hell no, 20mill for a pet is nothing compared to what you can make farming scrolls.

I don't sell my own pets but I do sell tames. I just want to make that distinction as some people FREAK OUT that I could sell my "babies", as they put it.

As stated, most top-shelf stuff is eventually a dead end. Sooner or later the market tends to dry up. Also, tamers tend to swap animals among each other, or pair up to go farming cu sidhes, dragons, etc. You could be sitting on stock for quite a time before the right buyer comes along. With Stygian Abyss coming out, you might get a run of fad sales for a few months but after that people tend to get over the hysteria and demand (likewise the price they're willing to pay) will drop off.

The bottom end (pets for non-tamers) doesn't attract the high price-tag, but the turnover is good. I don't know how or why people keep losing these pets, but they keep coming back. I'm not on a huge shard, either.

Do look at what you're selling & make sure you're actually turning a profit. eg: It costs 10K to get into the area where ferrets spawn. Take as many as you think you can sell, offer them in pairs so people get that dook-dooking happening.. but realise you probably won't sell as many of them as you can possibly tame on one ticket. Sooner or later you'll need to figure that 10K into it. Also any insurance you burn, if you decide to go in equipped.

I charge a reasonable fee for an animal, and I make the "big bucks" in tips, which I never solicit. I'll always haggle as people tend to pay what they can afford in any case. You won't always get a 500k tip but I've had more than a few 6-figure bonuses just selling basic animals. Occasionally I'll have a top-end pet among my stock just to see if it moves, but the bread and butter is in mounts and the like.

Essentially, at this end of the scale, it's not a trade for someone who wants instant gratification. Be prepared to get yourself known - this is one of the few face-to-face trading scenarios left in the game - and make yourself available via IM or the like. It can be very rewarding building a clientele, and in this aspect it's more a merchant skill set than a taming one.

If you don't enjoy it, you're seriously better off doing something more profitable like farming gold, items, or scrolls.

This is excellent advice, as long as things haven't changed drastically in the year since I left. What you want to do is become known. I had people sending me ICQ's and wanting to buy pets for a long time after I left. I think my last request came only a month or two ago. But I was known for selling extremely high quality pets.

I made a lot of gold selling pets. I'm thinking over 200mil in the two years or so that I was a serious pet merchant, but I probably could have made more gold in the same amount of time, other ways. But it was fun, and I obviously kept the best of the best that I found.

I'll let you in on a little secret. This may not seem obvious, but the best market for high end pets will be among the "hard core" pvp crowd. They are the ones farming high end content for scrolls, or artifacts, and they are the ones that have the gold to spend. It is nothing for a pvp'r to spend 20 mil on something special.

But if you are going to become known for selling high end pets, you had better make sure you gain the required skills, and put in the necessary effort. I have a spreadsheet with the stats of all the major tameables on it, and a system for assessing them that is much better than the pet calculator (although it is similar).

And another little secret, it is just as important to understand your clientele as it is to know the maximums and minimums for pet stats, and what colours are rare. There are certain stats that I might not have thought were all that important, but I knew that pets with those stats were in demand, so I always kept an eye out for pets with those stats.

I'm not going to get into an argument with a customer about whether or not their favourite number has any meaning or not. The customer is always right. But at the same time, you do sometimes have to play the professor, and be ready to explain why some pet that you may think is special, is indeed special. :)

But lastly, and most importantly, your most valuable asset is your reputation. Just as important as your reputation for knowing your trade, is your reputation for honesty. If someone asks for an opinion on a pet that someone else is selling, make sure you give an honest one, even if it means you lose a sale because the pet they are selling is better than one you are trying to sell.

Nothing is more valuable to as a merchant than your reputation, absolutely nothing. And this is especially true in UO these days, because UO is very much like a small country town, everyone knows everyone else. If you get a reputation for being a scammer, you are doomed as a merchant.

As a generalization, Tames I sell are

1) Special Request

2) Mobs I perceive as being good (75% or better) but probably will not be tamed. I call this a Server Reset Tame.

3) When I find a worth while upgrade to a pet, I will tame it and sell the fully trained yadda yadda replaced pet. I do try to the best of my ability to do this to people that will truely value it OR pay through the nose for it. In essence I want them to make the effort one way or the other.

Now back to 2, I will stand on the Steps to the Luna Common are with the Pet Renamed "For Sale a ......". Again my goal is to find it a good home. I am not above selling it to some one that will pay through the nose, but with these it is really about connecting a newish Tamer to a Good pet.
