Lit lanterns on vendors?

I've seen some vendors holding lanterns that are lit, bit I can't get mine to light up. The ones who are holding lit lanterns all seem to be holding a "Lantern by Begging" or some such notice of something to do with Beggars.

What's the deal here? I can't find any information on these lanterns.

Just as it says. You get them by begging. I think in heartwood perhaps.

Seems like there is another kind of lantern that will allow to be lit as well.

Yes, the lanterns beggars receive from heartwood NPC's will stay lit while a vendor holds them.

If you don't have a beggar and need some just find a beggar on your shard. It's a fairly regular drop. I usually toss between 5-10 per begging session. If you play Catskills my beggar has a few in his pack right now I believe. You (or anyone reading this) is welcome to them. I just toss them when I get a full bag.

Begging as mentioned for nowadays. But there are a few old time lanterns that will work as well, forget when EA made the change but they are rare to find nowadays. Thats why you have seen a few non begged ones that are lit on vendors

Beggar's lanterns flicker slightly, they're quite nice. They don't toggle off, which is why you can equip a vendor with them lit and why they don't use oil. Oil is consumed when igniting a lantern; if it's always lit it won't run out. They also look good against a south-facing wall as they're right-justified within the tile.

Aside from that, a few coloured pre-patch lanterns exist which don't switch off. It was an old bug soon after coloured tinker items were brought in. I have two in copper and one in bronze. I'm sure there are others out there, keep an eye out at IDOCs.

I forgot about those. I wish I had kept the valorite ones I had made back in the day to decorate with.

Yeh I can remember when either a regular lantern or torch remained lit in our vendors hands...but I forget WHY EA UO stopped it all ! Kinda miss it personally !

It's in the back of my mind that they did it exactly to make Begging lanters, or something else like maybe a reward(?), worth something more.

I always thought that kind of thing was bad overall, too "gamey". It takes away from the regular world to give specialness to a specific aspect. They should have made a new lantern for Beggars, an "ornate family relic" or something, with different and cool looks. UO has had a tendency to use old stuff in cheap ways like this, and it's not good for the game.

Heck, Devs, the artwork could have been easily done by simply adding a little modification to the existing art. You're desire to restrict this game so that "ancient relic computers" ( :) ) can run it is killing this game, as always.

Trebr I have a couple of GM beggars too... so if you need a lantern let me know I'll be happy to attempt to acquire one for you. Just ask Bill... who lives in the Beggars Wood in Yew.

Revisiting this with some game changes.
I noticed that a regular lantern shimmered like the Beggar Lanterns did. So I went out and hunted some up off of Ettins in Despise, then I went and bought one off a Provisioner, and they all shimmer like that now.

So you beggars might want to keep an eye on your lanterns, there might be an art change or something coming down the road.

That's only when you hold them though, maybe it was that way, I don't know. And you still can't light the regular lanterns on a vendor.
