Since coming back to the game (gone 7 years now) and having an empty stable i was wondering what are the pets of choice now...

Any locations of where these can be tamed at would be greatly appreciated too :)

Greater Dragons are all the rage, which I just found out (just came back after almost 2 years off myself). They can be found in destard, but be careful... they are nasty. Also Cu Sidhe's are popular, you can find then in Ish near Sprituality.

Hiryu's are a good pet as well.

You can get good information on everything here

The Hunter's Guide

(The left hand side list all the mobs, pick one and you can get all the information, were they spawn, what they look like, what their skills, stats, to tame (if any) are.

Firstly, welcome back!

With pets your best choice depends on what you're going to hunt these days, so I still keep and use older pets alongside the newer ones. I still have my first WW's, dragons and nightmares but they have got some different hunting partners now :)

What I've added to (and kept) are pets like the rune beetle, bake kitsune, greater hiryu and some novelty pets like my pack of cats and such. And a couple of dread warhorses.

You'll hear a lot about greater dragons and dread warhorses as those are the current "in" pets.

Dreads are currently not spawning and we don't know for certain if they ever will. It's quite possible that they won't. Which means you'll find most selling for millions of gps :( I do like mine, but I wouldn't pay that much for one, because you're paying a lot for the rarity (possibly temporary) when the pet itself isn't essential for a tamer. They're nice, but I wouldn't go that crazy over them. I'm still hoping they respawn heh.

Greater dragons are the beefed up dragon, and you'll see most tamers running around with one just now. They're very powerful and if you want a pet that takes minimal healing to kill spawn easily they're perfect. They're strong as tanks and good on damage so they make life very easy :) I find their power makes them boring to hunt with so I don't use them.

My favourite pet is the bake kitsune, as you can have 2 and a 1 slot mount and they have good resistances and a strong attack. And they giggle lol. They only require 85 skill in taming and lore to control, but don't let that fool you into thinking they're a newbie's pet.

Cu sidhe are good tanking pets and they're big rideable dogs. They can heal themselves and their owners and they have a lot of hit points. The downside is they don't do a high amount of damage so you might find they're not ideal in every situation. Often tamers will use them teamed up with another tamer and their pets. The cu takes the brunt of the foe's attack while the other tamer's pets can safely attack a monster they'd likely die to.

Hiryu I tend to use instead of a cu, because they do more damage as well as being quite a sturdy pet.

Hope that helps you out a bit, but if you have any questions, you're in the right place :)

Combo's for example, bake kitsune/rune beetle, bake/dreadwarhorse, dread/nightmare are also popular or you can run 2 bakes. The combos can work better than a GD or a cu in alot of cases. I tend to use pets based on situations but the possibilities are endless especially given the new expansion and the new tameables

I'd like to echo Wenchy... Bake Kitsune's rock. A pair of them are quite formidable, they are nasty little casters. You've gotta be on top of your healing when hunting with them though. We forgot to mention the Cu's bleed attack, that's a handy attribute.

Oh, and I almost forgot.... a pack of 5 frenzieds are fun! =)

I am on LS and will help you get some of the pets. Please let me know the minimums (stats, resists, etc..) you are looking for in the pets.

We can go hunting for them together or I can look for some on my own and hold onto them for you. I would like some help if we go tame greater dragons though.

If you want to look for your self, I suggest:
Bake Kitsunes - The Kitsune Woods (along the mountain area) this is west of the Homare moongate.
Nightmares - Kirin Passage (the bottom dark area, dead end) and watch out for paragons.
Hiryu - just northwest of the Isamu moongate.
Greater Dragons - Destard has a few.

Yeah The Bake Kitsune .... In my opinion Taming Requirement vs Usefulness of the pet is hands down the winner.

Pack Instincts may be new to you.

I am not a multi-pet fan. Nothing against it, I just have a hard time getting the right pet healed and all attacking the same thing or not ....

Others here can talk more authoritatively on the subject.

I am fairly sure that a Pack of Frenzied Ostards are something to be feared by many mobs.

Well with multiple pets the thing is to have good macros for vetting and to practice before you head into high risk spawns. It helps to have pet bars set out in the same order as your macro keys and make them easy to remember, whether alphabetically or whatever. I once had names stuck on my keyboard lol.

When I started out I'd have a specific key allocated to an individual pet. So you could have say F1 for one pet. I'd have the key itself as my vet macro for that pet and combine the key with ctrl, shift and alt to give out commands like kill, stop/follow and stay. I found that easiest system to remember.

Whichever pet is first out the stable will virtually always be targetted by the monster, so I always have that pet at the top of my healthbar stack and get ready to vet that pet first. You can send in another pet first which I do during training, but the first pet out the stables is the pet that the monsters will try to go for. I tend to command my first pet to kill by name then hit all kill/last target macros for any other pets.

Kits are great pets for learning multiple pet handling with, because they can handle themselves long enough for you to find the right key. Mine often heal themselves if things get hairy. Packs on the other hand are best built up gradually to 5 or you can hunt with them somewhere quiet. Ideally get different colours so you can tell them apart, or as i did with my cats - different sizes and colours.

One of the main benefits I get from training out in the field (apart from gold/loot) is that by the time I'm near anything dangerous I have my macros memorized for those pets and I'm up to speed commanding them by name. Especially with the cat pack. So if nothing else I'd say that's when it's most worthwhile to do the dungeon tour. Frenzies are particularly brutal as a pack, but I still love my cats. They're something different and seeing a tiny cat puff fire is priceless ;)

I'm so rusty its not even funny...

I went to the spawn for the Bake Kits and promptly died 2 times lol...

Any advice on how to tame them? Maybe i should get a tamed pet first to help me out a bit since my stable is bare at the moment..

:) We warned you the Bakes are tough .....

*Shrug* I have a peace tamer and she was the first tamer I made. I just always Peace them ....

They can be lead tamed you just need to get into the rythum and perhaps be prepared to run off a bit and ivis ... heal up and go at it again. You need to watch out for when they turn Human, they can be tamed and they will attack you so don't be fooled.

I don't know what your skills are but if you have a gm magery and evalint then you can consider paralyzing them.

I don't think that is necessary but ...

You can always go to the Test Center TC1 and .... practice :) there is a write up on the commands to set stats, skills etc. I always use it to .... catch up on the changes.

Ohhh i know you all warned me but its like saying " Don't touch that its hot" and of course i was the one that had to touch it...

I don't know if taming has changed much since i was away but the way i'm doing it now is run up to the thing and start my taming and try and invis...BTW how far away can he stray before i'm not in range of taming? Then i rinse and repeat while healing myself and curing myself.

Where is this writeup on the commands to set etc that your speaking of?

Yeah, kit taming can be quite exciting ;) If it's any consolation they gave my legendary tamer a real runaround the first few times. I had one teleport constantly as I galloped around it taming - my partner sat beside me in hysterics lol. Be warned, they can polymorph into the form of a wandering healer - don't ask how I found that out :D

I haven't tried this method, but someone said they'd tamed a gaman nearby and told it to kill the kitsune, then immediately commanded "all stop" then "all follow me" or "all stay". Apparently if you can keep the gaman alive you should be able to tame the kitsune without it attacking you. I haven't tested this, but if you have an empty stables that might be something you can try instead.

My method if I lead tame a kitsune is to use a nightmare to beat the kit down to really low health, then quickly mount and start taming. You need to be within a couple of tiles of the beast to start the tame attempt, but as soon as you see "you start to tame.." you can move an extra couple of tiles away. If you can carry a few cure and heal potions that'll help you. I usually eat an orange petal to protect me against the poison, but either will work fine :)

You can use energy vortexes or earth eles to beat the kit down too, just ensure you're ready with a mass dispel if you use EVs. Earth eles can be commanded, so you might find it easier having eles you can call off.

I just set Brelyn up with a trained GD, and have a very nice valorite blue cu sidhe that he is interested in... I'll train it up and have it to him soon. I'm also going to check out the nightmares while waiting for the cu sidhe to bond before training. The cu sidhe works best for me in any of the Champ spawns, but others like the greater dragon.

Another pet to consider is the rune beetle. Tamed up with a nightmare or bake, and that's a winning combination. I just haven't had great luck finding the "perfect" beetle.

And finally, a pack of five frenzied ostards in next on my list of pets to tame and train. I haven't tried these before, but I've seen them kill swoops faster than any other pet.

And for a bit of advice, make yourself known in the Tamer forum to help get your feet in the ground and running faster. A lot of knowledgeable folks there! Wenchy is moderator there, of course.

Brelyn and I went out taming Bake Kitsunes last night. It was fun. After some searching, we found some solid ones. They have room for improvement, but these ones should not let him down.

We looked around for hiryus, but did not find any decent ones (man I hate elite ninjas).

The rune beetle is one of my favorite pets. It can be visciously fast, corrupt armor (lower resist temporarily), and has great magery. If you are out hunting with other tamers, one of these guys will make a big difference. Old Man is right, that it takes time to find a good one.

I went to the Yamandon (sp) Point and led the Yamandon (sp) to other pastures.

I then tamed the first RB I found, lored it, then used it to either kill the other one or be killed by the other one if it were better and through this process made a lot of coin and got a fairly good to very good Beetle. I focused on resisit, stats, Poison and Magery.

Well the order of importance to me was (Resists, Poison, Magery as in all mostly equal) then Stats.

It was fun, profitable and yielded a good catch.

The Hiryu's, I lead the EJ's and that Magic Caster off to that point with the other mob (sw of the Hiryu Spawn) and then just got my Greater and killed em till a High Resists, High Wrestling and High HP came along. Eventually Color was a Requirement.
