Beta Client = Enhanced Client = Beta over?

Just curious Chrissay. I noticed you've dropped the use of the word beta when talking about the client these last few weeks. Several people have posted here that the content announcement means its coming out of beta but that the client is still beta. What say you to that claim?

think that term came about because there was much confusion about client and content.... people kept saying 'SA beta' when discussing the client which didn't have the content that most people associated with a beta and the client was open to everyone who were all calling it SA when it didn't have anything to do with the grand dungeon of the gargoyles which is what the SA content will be and not what the client is cause using the client you can right now only enter the lands of Britannia, Tokuno, Ilshenar and Malas and we all know the only gargoyles there haven't come out of a volcano.... well, maybe those nasty ones up in Ilshenar visit that nearby volcano now and then ....

is it soup yet?

Yeah, I'm clear on the difference between the client and the content from the server. But Chrissay dropped the use of beta when speaking of the client back in late July, look at the archived news to see what I mean. They stated the 3rd week of July when the beta client became available to everyone that it would hold the "beta" tag until it was ready. So.....my question is whether or not THEY still consider it beta.

I understand your question, but really what is the difference?
That is what I have been saying the last couple days here -- they are going to keep "updating" both clients as they have for years. Someone yesterday said when was the new client going to be officially "released"... what would that even look like? There isn't going to be a box in stores, so a "release" of the new client will simply be a post on stratics that says "hey it's not in beta anymore".

If you look at things, the 2D client has been in beta for 11+ years. That is the nature of online game clients. So, calling the enhanced client in beta or not doesn't matter. It will keep getting updated, but for all realistic purposes, it has been released.

The Enhanced client is STILL in beta. We wanted to distinguish the difference between the client beta and the content beta.

To clear up some confusion:
  • The Enhanced Client is still a beta product, and in active development
  • You should assume the Enhanced Client is beta until the day comes when we explicitly say otherwise :)
  • The name was changed to stifle confusion between the SA Content Beta and the SA Client Beta (which are two different things happening around the same time)

I'm actually more confused than ever. All I know is Beta or no.. I downloaded the free software on the Herald page, and when I log in with SA I will attempt to get onto the Retribution server so that I may access the new lands.. if lag doesn't get me first.

perhaps there would have been less confusion if they would have made a link on the herald page where all this stuff is announced. where is the problem to say:
you need either the ENHANCED CLIENT www...linkXY
or the special 2d Client www...LinkXYZ
to enter the stuff we ar talking about. sure the Special2d is linked. but why keep confusion on the new client at least give the Info: the New Client in Version 3.0.0.127 is the one you need. (because Versionnumbers are sometimes usefull to differ two pices of software!!):bored:
edit:
and why announce on herald" if you cant login till now you have wrong client. if the server isnt up? (like i found out NOW):wall::wall::wall::wall::thumbsup:

*takes a stab at explaining*

"Stygian Abyss" (the expansion) is coming out Sept 8th and going into public beta today.

The "enhanced client" is a whole separate project that will not be officially released until later (perhaps before the Stygian Abyss expansion, perhaps not until some time after the Stygian Abyss expansion), even though the working beta version is available now.

The "Kingdom Reborn" client will not survive the launch of the "Stygian Abyss" expansion (as far as I know) so KR users need to move to the enhanced client, which is one of the reasons it's available early - to give time to adjust.

The "classic" (aka 2d) client requires enough updates that it was easier to package it as a new install rather than a giant patch. So for now you'll have two copies of client installed. You'll continue to use your existing install for all shards except Retribution until the servers are updated with the SA content.

(*hopes that's all reasonably accurate*)

Let's put it in a more understandable way:

The Enhanced Client is still under development -- ie: there are still bugs that the Dev Team are working out.

The Stygian Abyss content (gargoyles, new crafting stuff, loads of cool, fun, fantastic stuff) is going to be going live on release day -- this can be accessed in the Enhanced Client (still under development) or the 2D Client (which will receive updates to allow access to the SA content).

In short, the CONTENT is going live; the client is still in beta until further notice.
