I have no problems picking things up in grid view.

Quick tip for grid view:
Put all of the items you CONSTANTLY put in your backpack on the BOTTOM ROWS... spellbooks, runebooks, etc. Anything you USE from these items, throw onto a hotbar or two. Then save the upper portion of the grid in your backpack for loot and other such drops.
For my miner it's a little different in that the top two rows in the backpack grid are for shovels/prosp tools... everything else as above goes to the bottom.

i have the same problem sporadically on any item. The list/grid view work without issue...

Rearranging items in grid view seems to affect their placement in legacy view.

I always assumed that either of the two, list or grid would always rearrange items in the Legacy Back Pack Mode view, hence I do not do that ...... yet. I would need to be weened off Legacy Back Pack Mode first
The few times I have used either of the List or Grid view to place NEW things in the pack, then those new things tend to just get put in one spot when you switch to Legacy Mode.
