Less cynically, it allows people to keep in touch with their network of friends efficiently without needing to IM/email/phone each and every person or keep a list of bookmarks to everyone's blogs.

Its for people who like spying on other people... reading every little thing they do.

Personally, I just really don't get it.

Though, it can serve as a half-decent impromptu private message board for small groups.
