Training packies/blue beetles

Training has been going a little slow with the 5 packies, right now I'm working a bit on the blue beetle - I GMd their resist using spectral spellbinders (worked great!) and get pretty good gains from gamans for tactics, tho wrassle and anat are moving slow.

I was wondering, since this character doesnt' have disco, if I could attack the satyr with the beetle, run off when it's discod, and then maybe kill shadow wisps in the wield? Seems a little convoluted and the wisps might be a bit low to help with skills.

Another option is to dig up a shadow elemental, get a second account up and running and disco it, then just attack the elemental with the beetle. I figure with it disco'd it wont be too tough to have to keep vetting the beetle (or packies if this works well.)

Something I noticed is that since I'm not guilded you can have your pet attack your character or other pets and no damage will be done - does this mean also they wont get gains? Cause I could probably have them attack each other on fel, but of course it would be much easier if I didn't have to constantly vet.

Any other ideas are appreciated, pet training is slow!

I've trained up most of my pets on non-bards and found they gained just fine through fighting monsters at the appropriate skill level. It is a bit slower at the top end, and disco is handy, but I never found it too awkward. I wouldn't stress too much about disco or even eles, there are options if those don't suit you :) There's a sticky training guide here or Morgana's old guide is still good albeit missing some of the later additions.

The satyr trick might work, or could also end with a dead bug because said satyr voked something tough onto your bug. You could tell it to kill, yell all stop and then mount it and then see if the satyr has forgotten what it did when you dismount again.

My blue bugs have managed deep sea serpents while still pretty fresh so I'm thinking yours might survive a shadow ele. You'll need a tank for the packies though. A friend and I decided we'd brave shadow ele training with our two packs, I had a second account running with a bigger tank while we had the 10 cats on it. It worked insofar as nobody died and we got gains, but we got bored in 5 mins and both took our cats off to train on spawns instead. Mind you, 10 cats yowling and screeching at the same time isn't good for your patience hehehe.

Blue pet training needs you to be guilded in Tram, though you need them damaging each other to get the melee gains, so you may as well do it in Fel :) It's good if you want vet gains, or have a friend who does, but otherwise I prefer hunting mobs.

Thanks for the reply! I think I'm going to farm a little more bone then give earth eles a shot. They're a little lower than my beetle's level, but they don't cast spells and don't hit too hard. Yomotsu should be empty now that tot has passed so i can lure away the spare spawn.

Sometimes you mine or chop wood in span areas, and don't you know your beetle just wants to run off and kill the nearest monster. Training them gives you time to chase them down before they die.

But still, you could just as well go buy some new pack horses :)

You certainly can do that and I know many that do just that. As a tamer, I prefer to keep my pets alive.

For training, I worked two packies against each other up into the high 80s. I was working vet on a char at that time so it was good. I used one to hunt Despise with until the high 90s. I did get impatient and put it on an ele for the last point or two.

The satyrs will work (confusion blast pots to stop any combat in a radius), but, you have to keep the satyr on screen or the disco from it wears off. I'm thinking that might be more frustrating that just hitting Despise or Shame.

Man, so many answers to this question!

I do idocs, and I wanted some bonded packies so I worked up vet and lore so I could stable them, lore was good so I could buy a bunch and find ones with great resists etc. When they're trained they will follow you faster, you can kill minor spawn with them, and (I'm hoping) surprise a few other campers in fel. :)

It's really for fun, like anything we do in this game. I like the bonding, it saves on mana when recalling back and forth versus gating which requires more magery to never fail and lots of mana I don't have to spare. Good training keeps them from being instant pk bait as well, or a meal for a group of orcs on ice island or wherever.

I like when I have something for it to be as good as I can make it. It doesn't have to be the best. I don't need the best suit around, or the most rares. But I do like to max out pet training, even on the weaker animals. It's just sort of satisfying.
