Hey... this was probally discussed before, so sorry for asking now.

I have been away from UO for a couple of years now and when I was informed there was a client, I had to reactivate my account to try again.

So far Iam impressed by the SA client. It runs great and actually looks good.

In the meantime I have been playing WoW, and I must say that one of the features that I really miss in UO is the ingame chatsystem that WoW has.

I find it annoying that ICQ is needed for communication... or is there some ingame chat that I just havnt found yet??

Thanks in advance!

you can make the new chat system work functionally like the WoW system. Turn off legacy chat, and you then have to press enter to chat. Also, commands such as /g and /p are there. Unfortunately there are no "global" channels yet. When I played WoW I hated the trade channel, but it did serve its purpose to an extent...

Ahhh cool... thanks!
Yes the global chats are usefull... in WoW I often you the "Looking For Group" channel and sometimes the trade channel.

I kinda think that the global channels brings some life into the game.
So when you are grinding whatever you grind, you can follow the more or less useless babble going on... giving you a sense that its actually a multiplayer game you play:)

Is there a command guide for the 2D chat system? I switched a character to another Guild that is part of an alliance and have the left third of my game screen covered in scrolling text. I'd like to silence it so I can see just the info text when I do things.

In your options menu, on the UO tab there are options to turn off guild and alliance chat.

as for commands I just know the basic:
/ = party
\ = guild
cntrl + \ = alliance

Global chat in WoW makes my brain bleed. Can we stay an exception? I really love having the text above the head.

Here are some of the chat options that were posted in another thread by Maplestone:

http://vboards.stratics.com/showpost.php?p=1371680&postcount=6

/a alliance
/e emote
/g guild
/p party
/r reply (responds back to the person who last messaged you)
/s say (return to normal speech)
/t tell (not sure how to specify who)
/w whisper (not sure how to specify who)
/y yell

Follow the command with a space and then your message - everything except /r changes the default mode of your speech - so once you are talking to your guild you will remain only talking to your guild until you use /s (and a space) to switch back.

(although I found this by trial and error, there are a list of hints if you left-click on the swirly at the bottom of the chat window)

Unfortunately I haven't guessed the syntax to specify a specific person with the tell and whisper.

I have to agree with you on this one. I too played WoW since it came out but am now back in UO. UO is a great game with a serious graphic deficiency that prevents new players from coming in any great numbers. The one thing I do feel now that I am playing again is how lonely the game feels if you are not in a guild. I too didnt like the Trade channel etc. but the general chat in an area was actually very helpful at times when it wasnt gettting out of control.
