Every once in a while I offer to teach players how to become a GM merchant.
I have free vendors but recommend you get a place in Luna. It is inexpesive. Don't mind what you read here.

Anyway. If you want to learn an aspect of the game, Id be glad to square up with you and help teach you.

A couple rules for becoming a merchant.

1. Be attached to nothing.
2. Sell the new stuff when you get it.
3. Buy back the new stuff after the event has been going.
4. 20% profit on each purchase to resell.
5. Don't worry if you lose gold. Its just a game
6. Make you vendor browse friendly. Don't hide stuff away inside packs.

Id post this in the trade forums but many new players dont really go there.
Feel free to move this post.

Why would I have 100 millions? What for?
Want a castle in a good spot?Want a luna house?Want a true rare? want to outfit every character you have with the best of the best and eat every power scroll needed? Want a event item you have no time or missed the event? Want vet rewards but don't want to use up your choices? Want resources for youre bod or crafting habits but don't have patience to mine, chop,or gather? Want to buy transfer tokens-character name tokens or any other tokens you need?
You only pvp and don't have the patience for gathering items for your character in trammel?Want something that is incredibly hard and would take you many years to get?
I guess I can go on but I think that answers it.

So buying back new stuff while event is going - I'd want to buy the Mempo's of Fortune now so that reselling after event is over nets me profit, right? I can maybe afford one right now @ 9m lol

I play UO as a trading/merchant sim as much as anything, and these points are right on. I'll add a couple of further points for beginning merchants:

7. Deal in items that are easily identifiable and commodifiable: e.g., an Orny with a 20% markup is a good investment, because people know the going rate of an Orny. A non-arty ring with good stats is a less good investment at a 20% markup (usually) because many people will not know what it's worth, and even if they do, it's harder to search for.
8. Pay attention to price trends. You can lose a lot of money hanging onto something too long, so keep an eye on that derivative: items that are dropping fast in price need to be priced to sell (better yet, don't pick them up in the first place).
9. The corollary to #7: learn to price jewelry, weapons, and armor. Part of this will come from just playing various templates and knowing what's useful. Named artifacts & such tend to be easier to sell than RNG-generated loot, but high-end RNG loot can often be found for next to nothing, even on Luna vendors: if you are patient, you can literally achieve markups of 10000% percent or more on these items. My personal rule of thumb: for named stuff, I aim for a markup of at least 50% (I'm a lot lazier than the OP). For RNG loot, I aim for a markup of at least 500% (since it's harder to sell).

What do you do with 100 million? Depends on your needs. Giving out gold to new players to buying a specific house. To buying things you want.

The Mempo at 9 million now... I have to be honest. I stopped buying and am trading them. I think there are tons that were being horded. I dont know if 9 million is good or bad right now or what will happen when the event ends.

I got 2 mempos from kills weeks ago and sold them for 15 million each. Last week or so I bought one for 10 million. I see them now on vendor for 8 million. Seems like a free-fall.

Now I have traded that mempo for a bunch of tok dyes. Good deal maybe. I got mostly browns. But the Merchant rule is move your item.

My problem has always been that if I enjoyed merchandising and had any aptitude at it, I'd do it on ebay for real goods and make real money rather than pay to play at it in a game :)

( *erk* ... that wasn't supposed to come out sounding like a slight)

Want a castle in a good spot?
no - the flexibility of 18x18 is to my liking.

Want a luna house?
no, no, no ... a 1000 times no.

Want a true rare?
I have one ... me; actually I have a few ... so what?

want to outfit every character you have with the best of the best and eat every power scroll needed?
not really important in the grand scheme of what *I* want - and no for the same reason.

Want a event item you have no time or missed the event?
nope - if I missed the event it's my bad. If I have no time for an event, tough.

Want vet rewards but don't want to use up your choices?
nope

Want resources for youre bod or crafting habits but don't have patience to mine, chop,or gather?
nope - I do my own resource gathering thank you. my gatherers use that time gaining weaponry skills

Want to buy transfer tokens-character name tokens or any other tokens you need?
if I do, I will pay EA if they are available or will bite into my collection of 30 or so for what I need.

You only pvp and don't have the patience for gathering items for your character in trammel?
n/a

Want something that is incredibly hard and would take you many years to get?
not really ... what I want will come to me through my hard work and gameplay

In essence, what I have in-game was earned by me because I want the satisfaction of knowing I **could** do such-and-so. I'd not have to wonder at all.

You're not incorrect in your viewpoint ... it just does not agree with mine. But that is the beauty of UO as well, isn't it?

Yeah, Mempo's are dropping. I made 100 million during this most recent event selling dyes, cloaks, and mempos. I'm down to one extra mempo and can't sell it, even for 8 million.

Another tip that I use: a great place to find the average/going rate for an item is the Luna Vendor Search Sites (I won't name them, you can use google if you don't know them). They are AWESOME -- just search Mempo of Fortune right now and you'll see the supply has swelled and the prices are down. Or search any other big thing and find out the current market. They help you find the right price point.

I really wish EA/Mythic would make their own vendor search website Auction House. It would be easy for them and really help the UO economy.

Wow. But youre right to each there own. So I should say on top of this post these are some reason for other people who wants to make millions.

I can't imagine this play style that you play, I wish I could but because my main fun is collecting, vendoring, crafting, resource gathering, being in a resource-vendor alliance with many friends. Running one of those guilds helping returning players make money I just can't picture the life style of not needing funds. It's just foreign it makes me think back to the early days when I couldn't keep more than 500 gold in my bank because I got robed so much for my newbie equipment and had to go buy more everytime I left town. Then finaly having the big accomplishment in getting a boat 10k was alot of gold back then. Then so on and on then being reduced to nothing because all my homes and possessions went idoc then rebuilding everything.

Wow memories they never want to die.

Wow, great points, and thanks to all of you for all the info!

I DO, however, want to add a couple of points. For myself, I never rented a vendor in luna or at any of the more well-known vendor houses; instead I started a vendor house of my own. So in regards to operating a vendor house of your own, a few minor points:

1.) Convenience! People like one-stop shopping. Sure, a good variety of rares-- especially the popular ones-- will draw people in, and you'll always get the curiosity shoppers. But by offering basics like bulk regs (easy to buy off npcs then markup), ores, ingredients, buffs and other consumable essentials, you establish yourself as a reliable vendor AND might end up selling high-end stuff to people who were only looking for leather!

2.) Be Friendly!! When my vendor house was running, I ALWAYS took some time to just be present for it. I'd train a crafter or something while hanging out at the house. When someone recalled in to shop, I'd always greet them and help them find what they needed. Even if I didn't have it, I'd go find a vendor that did. And to this day, months after I closed my shop, people still show up every now and then, and I still sell to em.

3.) Rotate stock! People will stop checking out your vendor if it always has the same stuff on it. If something sits on on the vendor for a few days, either remove it and hoard it for later sale or move it to a "reduced price" vendor.

4.) Relationships! Try to strike up relationships with other vendor houses. If others are familiar with you and one of their customers is looking for something they don't have, they might send em your way. You could even end up trading runes to other vendor houses!

5.) DISPLAY! I know everyone has been saying never hold onto anything, but in one circumstance I disagree. When I go shopping, if I see that a place is decorated with alot of high end or rarae items, it suggests to me that the player vendor is experienced and successful in the game. It says I can rely on them to have the most current merchandise at reasonable prices. We've all been to those "new player" vendor houses that are barren of decoration, where the "arms of armstrong" is on sale for a mil, simply because the player who runs it is too inexperienced to know how common such an item is. Display also makes your place memorable, makes you stand out.

K, so those are my thoughts. Lol, all this is starting to look like a faq=)

Excellent post.

I'd like to add this reselling things you buy from vendors out in the sticks on luna vendors is an excellent idea. Basically its location, location, location...

Careful shopping with an eye to resell is a great idea. For example 2 days ago there were Heartwood Kits in Luna for 27 Million and for 11 Million on vendors 2 people apart. Be extremely careful in all shopping.

The Mempos will go up in price in 2 or 3 years when many of the people that have them have quit the game. Right now, they are a buy and horde in my opinion. They were right about sell immediately, but that leads to never ever buy the newest thing unless you have to have it to immediately get a whole lot more of the same item. The Conjurer's Trinket was the perfect example. I had to buy one immediately for too much the first day, but I got 27 or something plus I don't even remember how many of the Grimoire's because I had that trinket to work with.

Im on atlantic by the way.

Creating a rune book of vendors you visit is (as above) a good way to find stuff to resell.

Remember there is always that player with a billion gold that wants what he wants now.

A couple rules for becoming a merchant.

1. Be attached to nothing.
Well, I reckon a good merchant can be attached to stuff, in fact that's one of the main motivations to keep going with the merchant..ing(?) in the first place.

I could only stick at it because there was always something I needed money for, and when I got that thing I definitely became attached to it :D If you always sell everything you get then you may aswell be grinding levels in WoW (imo)!

You are right - you'll probably make more money that way, but there's got to be a point to it all (imo).

3.) Rotate stock! People will stop checking out your vendor if it always has the same stuff on it. If something sits on on the vendor for a few days, either remove it and hoard it for later sale or move it to a "reduced price" vendor.
Just a counterpoint to that - from a crafter-shop perspective: Do not rotate stock, but commit to those items you are selling. If you have a fishing vendor for example - work to keep it stocked. Same with recalls, furniture, potion kegs etc. Why? Because you get returning customers who recall/gate to your shop because they know you carry this and that item.

I have been a shop keeper in UO since I started playing, but recently stopped because I found out I missed so much else of the game. At the most I had 27 vendors, mostly crafted goods - all stocked by me. Many times restocking vendors was all I had time to do with my playing time. I have never had a Luna vendor, I like the "shop" idea much better. Maybe some day when I figure out how to price armour and jewelry:)

Here is my list from a crafter-perspective. Note: You will not get as wealthy as those selling artifacts or high-end armour, but gold will still trickle in:

Always keep your vendors stocked. Always. You will lose customers fast if they recall in a few days apart and still find your vendors empty. And, commit to your stock. If you start selling orange petals - then stick to it.

Display, always important. Make it easy for customers to find what they want by name on vendors, display in front and display in the vendor bag.

Everything sells eventually, at the right price. Yes, even GM armour - that so many here on the board claims can`t be sold. Bullocks. There is still a market for crafted goods of any kind.

If you have a shop in the middle of nowhere you face something different than that of a Luna shop. You have to work at getting your shop known, you need to work getting a customer base. That means dropping runes and gating, you can`t avoid it. Decide how much time you want to spend on your shop and advertize according to how much traffic you want. This is rather important point, as you quickly can feel overwhelmed and find out it`s too much work to keep stocking. Or the other way - you don`t get enough traffic to make it worth your while.

Decide pricing: Resellers will always find you. Sometimes you want them to find you, other times you wish they would keep away. But you need to price your wares with the resellers in mind as well. If you price items that can be easily sold in Luna cheap - you will always wake up to empty bags. If you price your wares according to Luna prices, you will have a hard time selling anything.

And then there is the time thing. How long time and resources does it take you to gather what you sell? Do you want those items to move fast or do you want to be the last stop for someone that haven`t found anything else in those other shops they have tried? Deciding where to place your inventory is one of the most important decisions you have to make. Cause it`s not so easy as a Luna shop with a 50% markup when you sell wooden benches :)

Can you still earn gold by selling crafted goods? Yes! Don`t listen to the nay sayers - it just involves some time investment on your part and some good decisions.

Agree 100% with Serafi.
There are many ways to run a good shop depending on what you sell but for a long term shop run by crafters , this is the way.

Based on my vendor experience over the last few years, I'd say the advice given above are great. Thanks to the scripters/dupers, 100million now days are not that impressive unless you can consistently make them, say, every week.

The best tip I can give is to sell what players really need and desire. Once you do that, you can either claim high price for each item or selling a lot of them relatively cheap.

I have seen two types of vendor owners, the ones who try to make as much as gold as possible as fast as possible, and the ones who enjoy providing service to fellow players. Good merchants of either type have the virtue of dedication and they all contribute positively to UO.

For the 1st type, selling fad items at jaw dropping prices is the way to go. Once the fad is gone, they switch to other high margin items.
For the 2nd type, they tend to be more dedicated to their vendors and don't mind selling their goods cheap.

In terms of rotating goods or not, it depends on what you sell. For stuff that are constantly in demand, such as commodities, POF, repair deeds, etc. you want to keep them there all the time. Interestingly , this is also true for items hardly in demand, such as furnitures, decos, sandles, etc. You want to keep them there all the time becasuse it is hard to find them elsewhere.

Vendor is not for everyone but it is one of the best and honest ways to make gold.

isn't this all determined by what shard your on?

i sell quite a bit of armor on a small shard... most of the stuff that do i sell and not horde for a rainy day... ..i sell way cheap... if i was on atl i would have alot more $$$.

not to mention i give away alot of stuff if i meet somone new who needs a suit, weaps, jewlry etc.

for example on my shard your lucky to find any runic hammers above gold...
i was on atl a few days ago and seen a guy spam at the bank for bout 10 min's and found the val runic he was after... i think it all boils down to the population of the shard you call home.

I had a lot of items to sell when I moved into another shard. So a good way would be to open your home to customers, place the vendors inside in strategic areas where they can stop to shop while touring your place. Fancy if it was in a castle.

Dress your vendors up the fancier the better and place catchy names on them too for recall purposes.

Also being sensitive to buying trends in your shard would be helpful in knowing what to stock or rotate. There is always a consumable or particular item favorite.

Not a good idea, simply because most customers are lazy. ;)
Not meant in a mean way, just stating a fact. If they want to check out your house, they will do so, but at their second visit they just want an easy-access shop.

Serafi also brought up how much work it is to run a shop in a low traffic area, where you cant or even wont sell for high prizes.
It takes a big part of the day to restock . You feel proud when the venors are filled up , its more important for many of us to run a shop to be proud of than to make alot of money.

But when the resellers find you and clean out some vendors completely , you have to raise the prize again and again .You get no time for anything else . You can never catch up if you have vendors like ant bags and powder, orange petals, marked runebooks, spellbooks, stone craft and more.

Everything gets more expensive this way and thats ok for many playes but for new players and pure RPers as well I guess..its bad. It concerns me.

I sure would be happier if the Luna vendor houses took the work to get ppl running vendors in their houses that would produce the items themselves instead of buying up others stock. I know its a silly dream.

Oh, I have 17 vendors in our guild shop on Europa. Its south of Skara and no other shops around. I sell items from 50 gp to millions. Been doing it for eight of my nine years in UO and I sure know what Serafi say about missing out of other things!

But I bet for some others it doesnt matter if this happens. You get rid of your stuff and get the money and close the shop, or leave it empty.

I think Miss Foxglove (and Serafi) are strongly committed to "create" things and i surely share this behavior. Very few ppl know now how tough it is to run a basic-to-higher times shop. Those buying low/selling high just dont add much to the game... We recently have seen what they may do in real life (Traders) !

I wont argue for money... some ppl just think that s the most important thing in that game !!! (poor them). I just mean that being a constant shop runner is bringing much more added value than others.

After all a big part of problems within UO nowadays is gold related... it s weird to watch ppl behavior looking like if they were in real life... and i find it sad...

Thanks a thousand for those who dedicate themselves for a deeper UO.

I also think some think those that sell are playing a game style that is too much like real life. I think that is wrong too. The gold I get and the merchants arent real. Hehe. Its a game.

But thats the argument people like to have for some reason.

No matter who you are, you are not going to regularly sell an item that is worth 1 million - 2 million GAME gold for 100k. It doesnt happen. Less its by mistake.

Sure you might sell it for 750k (much lower) and some one will try and sell it for 2 million and that one will sit on their vendor.

The fundamental mistake many people make is that a million gold is a million. Its not. Because this a game.

You could call a million gold 1 gigabagiga. So what. Prices fluxuate on demand, supply, and in UO GOLD or gigabaga. Also on novelty, status, and usefulness.

Think of merchanting like this. Your not going to give up your 70's suit that has a value for a gm leather suit. Maybe once on a whim but not regularly. The value of merchanting is not just in gold. Its also trading. Maybe you trade this suit for a rocked out weapon. Still merchanting. Just trading.

My point, you compare prices to the current GAME economy not what it was worth 3years ago. It doesnt work that way.

To be a successfull vendor has nothing to do with how much you sell it for. If you acquire items through game play there is no loss if you sell it for 25k when you know people would consider paying 250k.

In the end youre still up 25k. Now, What I talk about is how to make more gold. If you buy an item for 25k then you want to sell it for 30k. Sure you could mark it up to demand at 250k. But still you make 5k. Thats the principle of a merchant.

Nothing I do is about super maximum absolute value. Its about raising you gold by 100k a week or 10 million what every you want in your fun game style.

It doesnt matter.

Something I haven't seen mentioned yet that is just as important as advertising and keeping stock levels up is to make sure you get face time with your customers. Make coming to your shop a personal thing for them. This is how loyalty is built with the customer base. Many times you'll find that they're looking for a specific item that you might have sitting in a chest somewhere, or know where to get easily, and can help that player out while at the same time getting a customer that will continue to come to your shop just because they know you're there if they need help. I'd say at least 80% of my customers have met me and spent at least a few minutes talking. They're also a valuable information source. Your customers will tell you what things you can stock that they'd buy on a regular basis just by engaging them in casual conversation.

My rules of merchanting:

1. Advertise, advertise, advertise
2. Keep the vendors stocked daily
3. Never put out all of your stock at once
4. Know your customers, and make sure they know you

Everything else will fall into place just by following these 4 rules.

mempos and cloaks will easily climb back up in price after friday.... on a side note i am shocked that not everyone has 100 mil by now... i mean the game is going on 12 years old its so unbelieveably easy to make gold now that i just don't see how its possible

"shocked"?? Man, let me enlighten you on something......alot of us have lives. We don't sit and dwell on UO 24/7.

Alot of us see UO as just a pc game too. We don't have to accumulate massive sums of gold, to compensate for our real life short commings.

I agree, having something you want in the game is nice, but you have to be plain stupid to pay someone pathetic millions for it.

Before the economy of UO went to hell, items were affordable....or, check this out, people worked long and hard for something. A vendor is working for it I guess......but from what I'm reading, alot of players invest too much brain power on something that can be gone in a flash if we lost electricity.

I guess we all need our escapes...........enjoy your wonderland.

Just for UOKaiser, I'll read the other answers after and will reply to them accordingly if necessary.

UOKaiser : Want a castle in a good spot? No, castles are crappy.
Want a luna house? Heck no!
Want a true rare? None that I think of.
want to outfit every character you have with the best of the best and eat every power scroll needed? Maybe one, to test PvP with really good equipment. Otherwise I like to get stuff by myself (achievement) and most of my characters don't even have room for big PS.
Want a event item you have no time or missed the event? More hoarding? That wouldn't be reasonable and I prefer to get event items when the event is there. Like a souvenir.
Want vet rewards but don't want to use up your choices? As it always been, I don't have the age to get what I'd like. When I'll reach it, it won't interrest me anymore. It seems to be a pattern.
Want resources for youre bod or crafting habits but don't have patience to mine, chop,or gather? BODs are for bots and I prefer to gather ressources by myself (achievement again, I didn't GM Mining just because it was written on a guide)
Want to buy transfer tokens-character name tokens or any other tokens you need? No.
You only pvp and don't have the patience for gathering items for your character in trammel? Rather the contrary :D
Want something that is incredibly hard and would take you many years to get? That's what's fun about it and will be so achieving when I'll get it after all these years! ;)

QUOTE]

Yes, I agree here, I misspoke. In the case of basics and consumables, always have the same things stocked. Think of video stores or smoke shops that guarantee certain items will always be stocked. When you sell that mil+ arty you got lucky on one day in ilsh, its a nice bonus, but the basics are your bread and butter.

Same goes for crafted items, esp furny, deco and consumables. if someone is looking for kegs, they're gonna go where they KNOW they can always get em. Furny too; have a wide variety in several colors and woods, or even lock down a furny dye tub for public use. You're not gonna make millions selling elven loveseats and stone anvils, but you'll get a steady influx of gold and attract people that will likely check out your high-end vendors.

In the case of arties and rares, rotate your stock. Its highly unlikely that you'll have 40 pixie swatters laying around to always stock, and also unlikely that customers will keep coming back for the same rare over and over. A couple years back I found a whole bunch of deco rares from paroxymus and eff and that sort on a vendor, super cheap, back when these things were new. When they stopped selling, I took em off the vendor for a while, hoarded em, and put em back up later on.

Basically, when people look at your rares vendors, try to show em new stuff as often as possible. If they know your stock of these types of items is always changing, they'll check back often.

One more thing to anyone who is thinking of starting a store for the first time: Make sure you have TONS of consumables backstocked before you even open. When I first started selling leathers, I thought 10k of each would be enough. WRONG! they were gone in 2 days. So MAKE SURE you have tons of backstock on leathers, woods, ore, kegs, regs, buffs, and any other consumables you plan on selling. Restocking and advertising are HUGE committments, so spend a few months backstocking as much as you can; you can't know when you'll have time later.

Lol, all this is making me want to reopen!

You know you've done your job when a Luna vendor changes the runes you drop, saying you exploited to get an item and killed their market because they're pissed off that you beat their prices so badly they can't compete with you.

Hey Luna vendor owner, this one's for you - :lick:

Thats some good power to kill a market.

Myself
Luna vendors
Brit moongate
My own vendor house

Each one gets a different style of vendor

House vendor gets more basic stuff etc. A place where people can depend on the vase being there.

So dont kill all of Luna please.

Nah, not all of Luna, just some. Some is enough. :D

Seriously though, I find the entire thing hilarious. I lmao'd that one of the seriously overpriced Luna ripoff artists got hit where it hurts by reasonable prices and a good sized backstock. My job is done.

Hail Folks,

I killed many a plant before I admitted to myself that there is no green in either of my thumbs. Similarly, I have neither aptitude nor patience for merchandizing.

What I really require is a trusted friend skilled in Merchandizing that I could turn over stuff for them to market on vendor(s). I would happily share in the proceeds as compensation for their efforts and knowledge.

Perhaps such a person will become known to me, or make themselves known to me.

I am not sure if this kind of practice goes on in your particular shard.
Do you often drop runes only to find out somebody is just collecting them?

Hehe I know it's trivial but I often catch my competitors do it. :D

Yeah
One time I dropped like 50 runes to my house shop. Some guy picked them all up and recalled. So I gated.

Odd.

Best is...

I was gating one time and some guy said I was spamming on him.

I was gating to my shop.

So he came in the gate and was trying to put boxes where I was gating to block me.

I asked him why he was doing that so he said Blah BLah blah... "Im not doing anything. Wheres my proof." I said okay. And tagged him for harrassment.

So I preceded to make 5 more runes to my place in different spots and rotated the gating. He was running around (players where laughing at him and informing me) trying to drop boxes. Id recall in to a secret spot and grab the boxes every once in a while.

So after a bit I want back. He was trashing talking me and saying to people not to buy my trash so I give him a bit sarcasm Im known for.

A buddy of his said "I would not mess with so and so you dont know what he can do." I laughed even harder. I said .. "you know this is a game right." "I wouldnt want him made at me.", was the reply.

Boom. He vanished right next to a box he dropped no recall. Im sure a GM tagged him.

It was fun.

:D nice going LOL!

Good to rotate positions on the runes coz sometimes they put boxes to block.

Can't figure out why they have to resort to this when we can all just get along huh?

Did i miss something? Cause i don't see what your original post had to do with making 100 million.... Almost seemed like you added that tidbit in there to get people to look at a thread literally about what?!?! Putting a vendor in Luna? You should have called this thread + Post counts for RavenWinterHawk.....
